Best Midrange Golf Disc?
Which Midrange Disc is The Best?
Many disc golfers primarily throw their mids on short courses. These discs can be used for drives, fairway shots, approach shots, and sometimes even putts – no wonder many golfers favorite discs are their mids.
Every disc golf manufacturer makes at least one mid range disc. On our site alone, there are 71 different midrange options.
New Midranges Hitting the MarketRecently a handful of new midrange golf discs hit the market. We have new midrange discs from Westside, Prodigy, and MVP, Dynamic Discs, and Latitude 64. Innova will be releasing new midrange discs like the Shark3 and Mako 3 soon as well. For extreme disc golfers that like testing all the latest discs, this is a lot of midrange to digest all at once.
Will these new mids be better than the ultra popular Innova Roc and Discraft Buzzz? The technology of drivers over the last few years, has made great strides, but midrange discs really get better? Or will Roc’s and Buzzz’s reign supreme for another decade?
From professional disc golfers to those who casually throw Frisbee’s around, we have asked the question, what mid-range golf discs are best?
The Buzzz Remains Supreme
Our site visitors have spoken, and despite so many different midrange options, the Discraft Buzzz is clearly the highest rated.
If disc golfers used other mids as much as the Buzzz, it is possible that this dominance wouldn’t be as pronounced. The Buzzz has been around for more than a decade, and is likely the most common golf disc. The fact is that disc golfers continue to like it, and use it.
While player skill has a bigger impact on one’s game than disc selection, confidence and scores improve by using good discs. Disc golfers perform better with discs they know and are used to.
As of March 22, 2013, 36% of our poll participants said that the Buzzz is the best midrange disc. It is versatile, consistent, and reliable for beginners, intermediate players, and professionals.
In second place, 19% said they liked Innova midrange discs other than the Roc. The Innova Shark had a high number of votes, likely because it is a very common Innova disc, available in starter sets. Many new players who begin playing with the Shark get used to it and stick with it.
Ten percent of respondents like at least one of the many different variations of the Roc, while another ten percent think that “other” Discraft midrange discs such as the Meteor, Hawk, and Wasp are best.
The Vibram Obex and Ibex ranked fifth (7%), followed by Gateway midranges (6%), Latitude 64 midranges (4%), other midranges (4%), and Westside midrange drivers (3%).

I like MVP midranges best. I really think there is something about the “Gyro” technology that gives them more control. When I need a throw that will fade a little, I throw my Vector. When I need a straight throw right to the basket, I pull out the Axis. I haven’t played much with the Tangent yet, but it is super easy to throw.
The Buzzz has proven time after time to be a loyal mid range for novice & even advanced players.
Pain, Core, Mace…
Latitude64! – amazing plastics.
Nice Brent, if you had to chose one of those, which would it be??
The gateway warrior is the best midrange disc! Easy to control, has a nice hyser line, and if you really crank it it is straight as anything with a nice hyser fade.
I’m gonna have to say MVP. They make the best quality discs. And their plastics have the best feel to them, I would probably say its a tie between them and Latitude 64. The Vector is a tremendous disc, it does the exact same thing time after time. Hard to compete with the consistency of MVP.
The Westside Tursas is by far the greatest mid I’ve thrown. Any line its on it stays true. Its replaced my kite, gator, buzzz, and drone! It has enough glide that it just floats and doesn’t require a ton of power.
The Innova Stingray is the first disc I ever bought, mostly because I liked the name. It, along with a Valkyrie and an Aviar P&A made up my first set.
It’s been a long time since then and I’ve moved away from using strictly Innova, but the Stingray is still my favorite disc I throw. It’s hugely underrated, but it does EVERYTHING. Great forehand or backhand. Extremely predictable lines, very easy to control. I’ll throw it off the tee for shorter drives or put it on a line through wooded holes or tricky anhyzers. It’s an excellent roller. People love their Rocs and Buzzes, but for a midrange that truly does it all, nothing beats the Stingray.
I have to go with the roc its a perfect anhyzer disc it also makes a great straight shooter that brings me to the pin i cant wait to try the new Roc3
For me, it’s the VIP Waship from Westside. I find it to be a great disc on any number of lines, that’s easy to throw and glides forever. There’s so many good midranges from different companies that its all about personal preference, but I love letting new players try my Warships and seeing them get hooked.
I like the buzzz. can do everything
I’m a fan of the Buzzz. All I throw are stable to over stable discs simply because of my throwing style. I’ve only been playing for a couple years now so I haven’t mastered my consistency… yet.
I’m all about the VIbram discs, even in the mid-ranges. I don’t think their durability and consistency can be beat. I used a Buzzz for a while but found myself returning to the Obex/Ibex combo soon after.
My favorite midrange is the discmania GM (the gremlin!). Not only do they multiply when you get water on them (tons of free discs!) but they are so stable with an extremely reliable fade. As a predominately forehand player I feel the Gremlin gives me perfect control at a low arm speed, preventing the disc from turning over. Since Gremlins are so small and sneaky, this disc is also perfect for anhyzers out of the woods. Put a little hyzer on it and watch it perform a perfect S. This disc will never, ever leave my bag!
I’ve thrown a Buzzz. I’ve thrown a Roc. I can’t wait to throw the new Latitude 64 Mace, but I have to say that the Latitude 64 Opto Core is where the money is at. Folks, I’ve made more upshots of 100+ feet with this disc than I ever have with any other mid-range disc on the market. It’s such a good mid-range that I took the buzzz and roc OUT of my bag for good! ALL HAIL THE OPTO CORE!
The buzzzz as is the best straight flying mid range on the market.
Gotta say the shark! I keep aroun two or three in my bag, some more beat up than others, and use them for pretty much everything except a drive or putt. i love my sharks, and always love the SHARK ATTACK!
The buzzz is the best midrange disc! Flies great if you are a beginner or seasoned pro. Every time I take someone new with me I let them use a buzzz.
Innova DX Shark!
I have only thrown the Buzz Ti and Roc3 and the Roc3 is my new Money disc! I love that thing, not only is a beauty but it flies a great true line and feels great leaving my hand every throw. I know this is all completely objective but until I have a chance to toss an M1 or M3, it will be a Roc3 for me!
I truly believe that the Gateway Karma is one of the best mids on the market. There are enough Roc variations to find one that will fit your game. And the Buzz is a very accurate disc in any plastic. But the Karma can do every shot you can hit with either. It has more speed than most Buzz or rocs have, giving you more control from further out. And the suregrip plastic is easily more durable than DX. And the HPP plastic seems to break in perfectly for its designed flight, instead of getting too soft like some flx esp buzzes did for me after a while. I throw EVERY shot in the book withe my Karmas. One is sure grip. The other is hpp. I do love mvp’s new mid and fairway line up. It is very strong and well balanced. I took peoples money with my FLX ESP Buzz. The new Paul McBeth Roc 3 flat top in champion plastic is probably the most balanced mid out on the market. But the Gateway Karma has made me a better disc golfer. And it will do the same for you. So you can go out and buy 7 different variations of rocs or 4 different buzzes. You can wait a lil bit to get some new prodigy mids with no names. But as of right no save your time, game , and money, and order a Gateway Karma today.
I love the MVP axis and vector, the axis will take your thrown angle and stick to it and the vector will go straight where you send it, with a good fade at the end. I how both sidearm – although I’m beginning to get the hang of backhands! I just wish the we’re a bit grippier in the cold and wet, as I end up using a dx gator instead of the vector when it’s wet – I really like the gator too, but the vector is a smidge longer, and more durable.
