Best Midrange Golf Disc?

Which Midrange Disc is The Best?

Many disc golfers primarily throw their mids on short courses. These discs can be used for drives, fairway shots, approach shots, and sometimes even putts – no wonder many golfers favorite discs are their mids.

Every disc golf manufacturer makes at least one mid range disc. On our site alone, there are 71 different midrange options.

New Midranges Hitting the MarketRecently a handful of new midrange golf discs hit the market. We have new midrange discs from Westside, Prodigy, and MVP, Dynamic Discs, and Latitude 64. Innova will be releasing new midrange discs like the Shark3 and Mako 3 soon as well. For extreme disc golfers that like testing all the latest discs, this is a lot of midrange to digest all at once.

Will these new mids be better than the ultra popular Innova Roc and Discraft Buzzz? The technology of drivers over the last few years, has made great strides, but midrange discs really get better? Or will Roc’s and Buzzz’s reign supreme for another decade?

From professional disc golfers to those who casually throw Frisbee’s around, we have asked the question, what mid-range golf discs are best?

The Buzzz Remains Supreme

Our site visitors have spoken, and despite so many different midrange options, the Discraft Buzzz is clearly the highest rated.

If disc golfers used other mids as much as the Buzzz, it is possible that this dominance wouldn’t be as pronounced. The Buzzz has been around for more than a decade, and is likely the most common golf disc. The fact is that disc golfers continue to like it, and use it.

While player skill has a bigger impact on one’s game than disc selection, confidence and scores improve by using good discs. Disc golfers perform better with discs they know and are used to.

As of March 22, 2013, 36% of our poll participants said that the Buzzz is the best midrange disc. It is versatile, consistent, and reliable for beginners, intermediate players, and professionals.

In second place, 19% said they liked Innova midrange discs other than the Roc. The Innova Shark had a high number of votes, likely because it is a very common Innova disc, available in starter sets. Many new players who begin playing with the Shark get used to it and stick with it.

Ten percent of respondents like at least one of the many different variations of the Roc, while another ten percent think that “other” Discraft midrange discs such as the Meteor, Hawk, and Wasp are best.

The Vibram Obex and Ibex ranked fifth (7%), followed by Gateway midranges (6%), Latitude 64 midranges (4%), other midranges (4%), and Westside midrange drivers (3%).

  • the lar64 fuse…I’ve never had a disc that was as easy to shape a shot as this disc!

  • The New Buzz!!! The way it feels when you grip it… Almost instant power that you get and when you lunch you it the path that you imagine becomes a reality. It moves so effortless in a straight line, or annihizer and it always finds it’s target. I taken down a lot of my friends that are better then me in distance drive but mid range is where I excell!! My confidence in throwing mid range have increase greatly thanks to the new buzz

  • Recently got an Innova Stingray (DX), and love it’s straight flight pattern on a strong backhand shot! Flattens out nicely after a high hyzer shot. Works well for hammers and thumbers, too!

  • The Discraft Buzzz is the best midrange ever. It obeys my command at all times. The only problem is when my arm gets confused about what command to give it, in which case, it obeys my faulty command…

  • I love discrafts mids. My favorite is the drone of the actual mids because I need a lot of stability. I usually throw my mids backhand but sometimes I throw a forehand with one. I use a meteor, ti buzz, Z buzz, ti wasp, drone, and zone for my 250-350 ft shots.

Oh the grand debate of disc golf. Before revealing my opinion i want to express the excellence of any midrange disc. With enough practice you can make any disc do whatever you want, yes a midrange will lack the supreme distance of a driver, but accuracy is key in this game and that is where the important shots are. What i think makes a good midrange disc is consistency. You have to know what the disc is going to do everytime you throw it, even in the wind. You need to find a disc that suits your style, one that reaches out to you, a disc you can go to for the important shots and know what it’s going to do. My preference reaches out to Discraft discs. Cryztal Z Buzzz I consider the best disc ever made, it is such a graceful disc, has perfect glide, can handle all the power you want, always has a nice fading finish you can count on, perfect disc, and as you throw it again and again it only gets better. Other important discs in my bag include the Wasp and the Meteor, Wasp for those shots that just need to hook around an obstacle, and Meteor for any shot that i need on a straight line or to hold the line i give it. But in the end its going to be my Utah State Cryztal Z Buzz nailing the shots and roasting the competition.

  • It has to be the buzzz hands down. It does everything you want it to do. It allows you really advance your game in a pretty short amount of time.

  • Discraft flx esp buzzz. It is smooth like a buttered roll.

  • I would go with the skeeter. Darn thing has got me more Birdies and saved my rear end many a time to finish out even

  • If you find yourself at a crossroad in your disc-golf life, pondering which mid-range will help your game the most, pause for a moment, and listen to nature. Do you hear that? Listen . . . That buzzzing sound is your destiny. Go to it. Choosing which mid-range suits you best ranks up there in life decisions with who to marry, and what to name your children. It is a choice that will affect your life forever. It is one you should not have to make alone, and so, I am here for you.
The Discraft Buzzz is the most versatile disc I have ever thrown, and it has blessed me with 11 aces in the past two years. Able to hold a hyzer line like no one’s business, the Buzzz will also fly straight as can be with a slight overstable fade. Beat it in, and you can throw it on a wicked anhyzer that seeks the chains with an astounding mixture of grace and fury. You can even throw nice little forehand flick shots (hyzer and anhyzer) that will get you out of the woods and into the basket. The Z and Elite X Buzzzes are my go-to saviors, but the occassional SS provides an unrivaled S-shot for added distance and relief from pesky lines. The Discraft Buzzz is something to behold, to be feared. I carry 4 in my bag at all times for protection, and I suggest you do the same. Every second you spend reading this is a second lost that you could be using to get yourself a Buzzz. Go now, fly straight, and prosper, my friend.

  • Honestly I am so new at this I have no idea. I have a Roc, Cobra and a Buzzzz. This is still my trouble area but I would really like to win a new mid range disc 🙂 but I am throwing par for the courses that I play.

  • I think the buzz SS is my fav maybe cuz I just start 9months ago n it’s easy to throw back hand I usually throw my disc with a flick but the buzz Ss is easy to control n throw a good distance for like strait n wooden shots…. I like over stable disc

  • Cryztal buzzz. I have not seen another cryztal buzzz yet in Europe, besides the two i carry around. Still afraid to throw them around water hazards wich tells how good my game is 😉

  • I’ve only been discing since last summer and when I started my favorite mid-range was Innova’s Shark. It had such beautiful accuracy!
As time went by I knew I need to upgrade so I got Innova’s Glow Champion Mako. It was equally as impressive but not as impressive as the new Discraft Buzzz my friend just added to his bag. That Buzzz is INCREDIBLE! It flies like no other mid-range I’ve ever seen thrown! I’m dying to get my own!
So, hey Topher… if you are really taking the Buzzz out of your bag for good, you can send it my way… I’ll be happy to take it off your hands 🙂

  • the Disc i think is the best of all midrange disc’s is a discontinued production disc. The Discraft MRV. the stability is dependable. It will fly flat and strait but will most always have that little hook on the end of the flight you need.

  • Teebird is still my most accurate disc for midrange use. Flies whatever line i put it on, and usually stays where it lands.

  • The Hammer was the best midrange disc for me.

  • If you had asked me before Monday, I would have said the Innova Roc (specificallly, a 180gram KC Pro Roc) and may have fought you if you dared to challlenge me on that point. I would have pointed out how many players throw Rocs, how long its been around (almost my entirely life), how it can be thrown by any skill level and how many World Championships its won.

Until I got my hands on an MVP Tangent. Granted, I’m an MVP fanboy, but still, I had none of their mid-ranges bag. I had a KC Roc and an Ibex for that. But the Tangent is bait so effortless and so manipulateable….if you don’t have one in the bag, you are just foolishly giving up stroked during your round.

Do the smart thing: get an MVP Tangent!

  • I love the Buzzz! I have tried most mids out there, especially the ones released recently (because i have only been disc golfing for a year) but the only one that is always is consistent for me. Also i have my only ace with a Buzzz!

  • my gators always keep 2 in my bag
