Best Midrange Golf Disc?

Which Midrange Disc is The Best?

Many disc golfers primarily throw their mids on short courses. These discs can be used for drives, fairway shots, approach shots, and sometimes even putts – no wonder many golfers favorite discs are their mids.

Every disc golf manufacturer makes at least one mid range disc. On our site alone, there are 71 different midrange options.

New Midranges Hitting the MarketRecently a handful of new midrange golf discs hit the market. We have new midrange discs from Westside, Prodigy, and MVP, Dynamic Discs, and Latitude 64. Innova will be releasing new midrange discs like the Shark3 and Mako 3 soon as well. For extreme disc golfers that like testing all the latest discs, this is a lot of midrange to digest all at once.

Will these new mids be better than the ultra popular Innova Roc and Discraft Buzzz? The technology of drivers over the last few years, has made great strides, but midrange discs really get better? Or will Roc’s and Buzzz’s reign supreme for another decade?

From professional disc golfers to those who casually throw Frisbee’s around, we have asked the question, what mid-range golf discs are best?

The Buzzz Remains Supreme

Our site visitors have spoken, and despite so many different midrange options, the Discraft Buzzz is clearly the highest rated.

If disc golfers used other mids as much as the Buzzz, it is possible that this dominance wouldn’t be as pronounced. The Buzzz has been around for more than a decade, and is likely the most common golf disc. The fact is that disc golfers continue to like it, and use it.

While player skill has a bigger impact on one’s game than disc selection, confidence and scores improve by using good discs. Disc golfers perform better with discs they know and are used to.

As of March 22, 2013, 36% of our poll participants said that the Buzzz is the best midrange disc. It is versatile, consistent, and reliable for beginners, intermediate players, and professionals.

In second place, 19% said they liked Innova midrange discs other than the Roc. The Innova Shark had a high number of votes, likely because it is a very common Innova disc, available in starter sets. Many new players who begin playing with the Shark get used to it and stick with it.

Ten percent of respondents like at least one of the many different variations of the Roc, while another ten percent think that “other” Discraft midrange discs such as the Meteor, Hawk, and Wasp are best.

The Vibram Obex and Ibex ranked fifth (7%), followed by Gateway midranges (6%), Latitude 64 midranges (4%), other midranges (4%), and Westside midrange drivers (3%).

  • I throw backhand midrange most of the time. I keep a new buzzz and an old buzzz that is a bit more understable.

  • I just started out but so far like the Buzz the best, very stable and controlable, did through some prodigy discs yesterday though and really liked them 🙂

  • I only carry 3 midranges with me. 2 Buzz’s (one new/stable and one beat in/understable) and a FLX Drone. I can do anything I want with a Buzz and I can throw them comfortably from 230-330.

  • I hate to give up my secret, it almost feels like letting others know about Grandma’s recipe for homemade apple pie… But, I think the absolute best, most versatile mid-range disc ever has to be the Buzzz SS. That’s right, not the oft touted Buzzz, but the Buzzz SS. When I throw this disc, I feel like a Green Lantern subjecting the disc to my willpower! I throw RHBH almost exclusively, and find this disc to be very easy to aim, and pretty forgiving. It does seem to have a little more glide than my other mid-ranges (Wasp, Buzzz, Meteor)so I can even drive off the tee with it and get consistent distances of right around 300ft. Powered down you can even get some hyzer shots out of it, although that is certainly not where this disc excels. Best soft turning anzyher disc that I have ever seen, mid or otherwise.

  • My goldline Core is the bread and butter of my midrange game. I use it for 90% of shots under 300 feet. It goes straight and stays straight!

  • I really like the innova king cobra and the discraft buzzz. Both always just feel right when i throw them and seem to go exactly where i want them to. I also really like how they are both over stable, which allows for good hyzer shots. I am also able to keep them going really straight even though they are so over stable.

  • Z Buzzz is the best mid range hands down. It’s for a good feel in the hand and flys consistent.

  • ill say the gator is the best midrange disc there is. good in the wind and hyzer shots 250ft for me that is. it doesnt get the respect it deserves bc of all the new disc coming out and people want those. come on people open your eyes and throw a gator!

  • I throw backhand and usually go with the Buzzz for most middy shots. Mainly use it for shorter drives and anny shots to get out of trouble. If I need something with more stability for going against the wind or if I need to flick, I’ll use the Roc3.

  • Flyin’ straight is what is duzzz,
    Rattlin’ chains just becuzzz.
Buzzz is the best, the best is the Buzzz.
(CIRCULAR argument if there ever wuzzz!)

  • the roc is becoming my best friend for odd ball anhyzers. i use a putter for most mid range shots.

  • I currently carry a Buzzz, Obex, Shark and Spider. Most of my mid-range shots are Buzzz and Obex, and use the Shark for anhyzers. I mostly throw RHBH, and have only recently started using mids as an experiment. I have since realized how much I have improved since doing so.

  • My go-to midrange disc always depends on the situation; I play on the East coast and that typically means a lot of throws in the woods. I can usually bring it home with one of the following:
    – Innova SE supersoft Rhyno, 175g, it does exactly what you tell it to do and sits on a dime.
    – Discraft Stratus, 176g, it took me a good while to really master this disc but I love it for straight/no fade shots and anything anhyzer.
    – Innova Leopard, 167g, for when I need to hook one long or shoot a tunnel >120 feet or so.
    – Innova Viking, 161g, I can do almost anything with this disc, but I really count on it at 150-200 feet throwing it overhand.

  • You can throw Buzzz in any angle yoy want and it keeps it.

  • Has to be the buzz but I also love my wasp too.

  • I have only ever thrown innova so right now I would have to say the Shark because that’s what I have used and it was a good disc till I lost it!

  • Westside warship is my favorite disc! I have one in both VIP and Tournament plastic. A true workhorse mid that can hold and handle most shots short of vicious fades and hard turns. Sneaky long, yet has a nice “touch” feel to it as well. Had it been released a few years earlier it would be part of the usual roc v. Buzz discussions.

  • I’ve fallen in love with the Wasp. It’s just overstable enough to be controllable in winds or for longer approaches, where a Buzzz or Roc might turn.

  • Basket Assassin Jeremy

The Buzzz in Z plastic is always what I reach for. Straight, fast controllable fade… what more could you ask for? I can flick it, backhand, tomohawk it and it’s PERFECT!!

  • I love the buzzz its under stable when I snap hard but fades just enough at the end I use my mids for a lot of drives since I overdrive most holes with a driver
