TOP TWENTY TUESDAY – APRIL 7 2020

It is time once again for our look back at the last week of sales. This weekly chart is generated from the sales figures at Infinite Discs – the purchases made by our customers are the only contributing factor to the statistics. We break the results down by disc model and plastic type so you can see which plastic types are selling the most. Here we go…

Putters are really picking up in sales since the coronavirus brought a “stay-at-home” policy to much of the country. Backyard putting is a big thing right now. The LUNA by Discraft took the #1 spot for the last week, being a putter that has been hot for a while. But the DX AVIAR slipped into the #3 spot, followed closely by the D-Line P2 (which might be even higher on the chart, if not for lack of supply). The Discraft ZONE hit the chart 3 times, in Jawbreaker, ESP, and Z-Line plastics. Other putter and approach discs on the chart include the Fierce, Judge, Nova, Ohm, and Roach.  In fact. of the Top 20 discs, 11 of those (more than half) are putters!

–> Each week we’ll invite you to leave a prediction for a certain chart position on next week’s TOP TWENTY TUESDAY report. The person to predict that chart position correctly in the comments will win a $10 gift card for the Infinite Discs website.

WINNER – The #8 spot this week was taken by the Nate Sexton Champion Colored Glow Firebird. It looks like SAM B. is our winner this week. Thanks for your guesses!

Farthest Flying Putters and Top Selling Putters by Brand

What are the top selling putters for each disc golf brand and which one flies the farthest?

This is the question nobody is asking, but a lot of people are curious to find the answer to thanks to lots of extra Covid 19 stay at home time. What is the farthest flying putter?

In this video, professional disc golfer Drew Gibson helps us answer these all important questions. He also likely sets the world putter distance record for about ten different disc brands.

If you’re concerned that you can’t throw a putter 500 feet, don’t be. Drew is one of the most powerful and farthest throwers in the world. Most disc golfers are happy to throw a driver the distance he gets the Stego to go.

Top Selling Disc Golf Putters by Brand

For this video, Drew used our top selling putter, over the last six months, from each disc golf brand. We carry over 40 different disc brands, but several of those brands are mostly irrelevant or no longer producing discs, so we didn’t bother including putters of disc golf brands unless their best selling at least made our top 75 putters list. The big brands like Innova, Discraft, and Dynamic Discs have dozens of different putters that all sell well. By comparison the top selling putter from Viking is not as popular as the 17th best selling putter from Innova.

Note, the Reptilian Stego thrown in this video is not really considered a putter, but as you can tell, in terms of distance it doesn’t go nearly as far as a putter, so Drew thought it would be good to compare that unique utility disc here.

Stamp Wars 2020 Winner

After three rounds of online voting and the final round which was determined by sales numbers, we have a 2020 Stamp Wars winner!

THE FINAL FOUR

This year, the four stamps that made it through the online voting phase were as follows:

THE ACE

by Silas Pearson

Features a flying, flaming ace card breaking through a chain.

THE DISC ELEMENTAL

by Steve Bayes

Features a creature of stone rising from the ground, lifting the basket from the earth.

HYPNOSIS

by Aaron Waggoner

Features the Infinite Discs logo (basically an Infinity symbol) layered into a decorative design.

LADY LUCK

by Justin Lago

Features a lady with her decorative hair that looks like basket chains.

THE 2020 WINNER

After a race that saw the lead change a couple of times, we finally have a winner. While the Disc Elemental stamp took an early lead, and Hypnosis then moved to the front, after the final weekend, THE ACE took the lead for the home stretch. Hypnosis came in a close 2nd place.

THE ACE is the winner this year. Congratulations to designer Silas Pearson and a very enthusiastic support crew who got the word out on social media to give the disc sales a final push.

Thanks again to all of the artists who submitted their cool designs this year. And thanks to the disc golfers that supported those artists by voting and purchasing discs. It was another fun contest this year. Thanks!

How to throw farther: Disc Golf Distance clinic with Zoe Andyke and Dustin Keegan Clinic

In this quick clinic, professional disc golfers and UPlay Disc Golf founders Zoe Andyke and Dustin Keegan teach us basic tips of how to throw the disc farther and get more driving distance.

The number one thing that new players want is driving distance. Here are a few tips to help you get more:

1. Line up your arms to see how far you can reach back. By reaching back all the way, you have potential for more hit speed and much more power.
2. Turn your head, hips, and shoulders with your throw. Line your head up with your reachback and throw
3. Load your body for that perfect line by maintaining a perfect 90 degree angle.
4. Allow your bodies to pull through your arms utilizing the muscles in your legs and hips.
5. Allow your off hand (the one not holding the disc) to follow through.
6. Stay “springy” at the legs in an athletic position to maximize leg power. Don’t stand up straight when trying to throw for distance.

Putting Styles: Should You Spin Putt or Push Putt?

In this quick disc golf tutorial, Dave Feldberg discusses the differences between different putting styles. There are advantages and disadvantages to each putting style. Depending on the conditions and scenarios, to be the best disc golfer you can be, Dave recommends that you learn and implement both putting styles. He also gives additional tips and explains why Paul McBeth is the best disc golfer in the world.

Spin Putt

A “spin putt” is where you spin the disc by rotating your wrist at least 90 degrees during your putting motion. Spin putts are more effective when putting into headwinds and for longer distance putts. The spinning motion helps the disc travel farther and makes it less susceptible to movement from wind.

Push Putt

A “push putt” is often the preferred choice for closer putts. This putting style is also referred to as a loft or shovel putt. With a push putt you simply open your hand and let the disc come out. The push putt is recommended for short term accuracy. A big advantage of the push putt is that when these putts miss they generally stay much closer to the basket and require shorter comebacks.

STATE OF DISC GOLF 2020 – How Many Discs We Own

Every year we enjoy asking disc golfers questions about their disc purchasing habits and preferences. As a retailer, this is a subject that always interests us at Infinite Discs. We help customers at all different levels, from the novice who wants to know the best beginner discs to the hard-core collector who buys the hottest new releases. It’s time to share the data collected from the survey participants on the subject of how many discs we own and what motivates us to purchase more.

HOW MANY DISCS DO YOU OWN?

Many of us remember when we were new to the game of disc golf. The first time we see another player carrying a backpack loaded with discs is usually a shocker. Why could the possibly need so many discs? It doesn’t take long to learn why multiple discs are necessary as you become a more serious player. But some of us dive much deeper into the sea of plastic than others. Here’s a look at how many discs survey participants claim to own.

Of course, those who would take the time to participate in a State of Disc Golf survey are typically more serious players. Thus, the number of participants who claimed to own less than 10 discs was very low. The highest column on the chart is the one representing players who own 41-60 discs. That means that the sweet spot is somewhere around 50 discs. However, as the quantities go higher, the number of responses doesn’t drop much. The final quantity of 200+ discs is the 2nd highest on the chart. In fact, just over 14% of those surveyed own more than 200 discs!

HOW MANY DISCS DID YOU BUY?

Perhaps you are a player who thinks deeply about what you want in a disc, weighing the pros and cons of each purchase before pulling the trigger. But there are plenty of other players and collectors who have a fast trigger finger when it comes to disc buying habits. Some players only purchase a disc when they lose a favorite. Others purchase a disc in the hopes that it will improve their game. Others purchase discs to hang on the wall. In the end, how many discs did the survey participants purchase in 2019? Here are the results.

A good number of survey participants claimed not to have purchased any discs in 2019, but the vast majority made disc purchases. The largest column is the one that represents 10-14 discs purchased. That’s an average of about a disc per month, which sounds pretty reasonable for an avid player. You may find it interesting that 58 people claimed to have purchased more than 200 discs in 2019.

HOW MANY DISCS DID YOU BUY TO COLLECT?

Let’s take a moment to measure how many discs were purchased solely for the purpose of collecting. When asked how many discs survey participants purchased only to collect, these were the results:

About 46% of those surveyed said that they purchased absolutely no discs for collection purposes. Another Another 24% said that they only purchased 1-3 discs in 2019 to collect. That makes about 70% who are probably not serious collectors. However, there are a good number of people who purchased large numbers of discs and who primarily purchased those discs for collections.

WHERE DID YOU BUY YOUR DISCS?

There is one more piece of data we’ll look at in this run-down, and that answers the question of where the survey participants acquired all of their discs in 2019. Was it at a local pro shop? Was it online? Was it at a tournament? Here’s the results.

Survey participants could choose as many answers are applied to their situation. So most people picked several sources. The most common answer was “Local Disc Golf Shop” which means that the pro shops and individual disc golf stores out there are still a vital part of the market. It is hard to compare online shopping with the feeling you get when you walk into a store, hold the disc in your hand, and thumb through a pile of plastic.

Online shoppers are still plentiful with 4127 people saying that they’d purchased a disc from Infinite Discs. That might be expected since we hosted the survey. But the 3799 survey respondents also said that they’d purchased from other online retailers as well, like Disc Golf Center, Marshall Street, etc.).

There were 1319 people who claimed to have purchased from Amazon.com and a smaller number at 972 from EBay. Those larger online retailers are important, no doubt, but in this case did not look as popular as other specialized local and online stores.

COMING UP LATER…

In a future blog post, we’ll take a look at the responses to the survey which indicate what factors are most important to players when they make their disc purchasing choices. Is it rarity, stamp design, brand, or something else? Stay tuned, and feel free to leave your comments below.
