Disc Golf at Night – Glow and Lighting Products

There is a side to disc golf that many players enjoy immensely and that is the joy of playing the game at night. Yet there are still a number of players who haven’t tried it. I’d been playing glow disc golf for a few years before somebody finally convinced me that it would be worth visiting the course after dark. It was a true joy!

With the sun now going down much earlier each day (you’ll really notice the difference Sunday) it’s the perfect time to get ready for “glow season.”

Glow in the Dark Discs

There are a lot of discs made in glow plastic, and I never used to think much about them until that first night game. Not only did the discs seem like an unnecessary gimmick before my eyes were opened, but I thought it would be a burdensome expense to have to buy all my favorite discs in glow plastic merely to play at night.

But that is an option, and arguably the best one if you regularly play disc golf in the dark. With glow in the dark discs, your favorite discs aren’t encumbered by additional add-ons. If you get attached to the discs you can also use these discs for day time play.

Most of the most popular discs from the top disc golf retailers have glow in the dark versions available. There are usually a good number of glow-in-the-dark plastic blends for popular discs available at any given time.

There are now even glow varieties that glow in different colors than the traditional green glow hue. Clash Discs offers a Blue Glow Berry and Doomsday Discs has a variant that glows in the dark red! We have thousands of different glow in the dark disc golf discs for sale right now.

Glow in the Dark Disc golf DiscsWhat Disc Golf Brand GLOWS THE BEST?

Different disc golf manufacturers have different glow plastic blends, and here at Infinite Discs we’ve noticed that there can be a big difference between them. Some brands like Innova and Discraft have pretty good glow products, though it depends on the plastic type.

Specialty blends, and color glow variants just don’t glow quite as well as the traditional “glow color” discs.

The Innova Champion Glow varieties are good as well as their Glow DX. With Discraft, their Glo Z Line plastic works pretty well, but their Glo ESP blends tend to be very hit-and-miss when it comes to actually glowing in the dark.

Brands like Latitude 64 and Dynamic have not been known to have good premium glow plastic, which they usually call “Moonshine,” but their softer putter plastics glow great.

With MVP and Axiom, their glow plastic is usually called “Eclipse” but, but most often it is either the rim or the flight plate that glows, but not both. The new version of Axiom Disc flight paths glows REALLY well.

Best Glowing Disc Golf Plastic

The brand that consistently glows the best is the K1 Glow plastic by Kastaplast. There’s something magical about their glow-in-the-dark plastic because all you need to do is dim the lights to see those discs light up. They glow surprisingly bright and for a long time. Whenever Kastaplast runs their glow plastic, they sell out fast, so be ready to pull the trigger when you see them in stock, because it will be hard to find anything that glows as well.

Disc Golf Accessories to Make Discs Visible in Dark

Make your discs glow, and stay glowing with a UV Flashlight

Disc Golf UV FlashlightThe first time I saw one of these things in action, I was amazed. My brother pulled this awesome LED flashlight out of his bag and literally drew light across his disc. As soon as the flashlight hit the disc, it left a trail of glowing, green light. UV flashlights are a must for glow disc golf.

It only takes seconds to charge glowing discs or stickers, and they shine brightly for several minutes. Then, after you’ve thrown your disc, the UV flashlight makes finding them in the pitch black of night even easier than it is during the day!

You simply shine the UV flashlight around the fairway, and the moment the light hits your disc, it lights up again. And it does that without the “light noise” of a traditional flashlight…it doesn’t look like you’re actually casting a beam around. I played a glow round on a course that usually presents a lot of places for discs to hide in long grass, sagebrush, and trees, and it was honestly easier to find the discs at night than during the day.

You’ll probably want to start picking up discs in glow plastic eventually. But here is another option for night play that is quick and inexpensive.

How to Make Regular Discs Glow

I since discovered that a few little night round accessories that can get you playing disc golf after dark, even without a slew of discs in glowing plastic.

One of the quick ways to jump into the glow game is to pick up Glow Tape which are designed just for disc golf discs.

Glow Tape Vinyl $4.95 Per Sheet

These are basic sticker rings that can be peeled off and stuck onto any disc to make it into a glowing disc. You can get enough sticker action out of a sheet to light up three, four, or even five discs, depending on how many sticker rings you decide to apply to each disc. They are light enough not to mess up the weight or flight tendencies of your disc. They also charge instantly with UV light and glow brightly for several minutes.

Now, if you have glowing discs, or if you have glow tape, you can charge them with traditional light, which takes a bit longer, plus lights up your fairway, or you can pick up a UV Flashlight which makes a LOT of difference in your ability to quickly charge and throw your disc.

Flat LED Disc Lights

Flat LED Disc attachment Light

These little LED lights are easily affixed to the bottom or top of your disc with packaging tape to light them up at night. The light works better on certain colors of discs, and best on plastics that are somewhat translucent. They are inexpensive and last quite a while. They are small enough that they don’t effect the flight of your disc. You’ll have to avoid water hazards because once your LED light hits the water, it will die.

Shop for Flat LED Disc Lights

I found some photos on Tumblr.com that appear to be time exposures with LED lights on discs. Leave it to awesome artists to find a beautiful way to highlight disc golf at night.

So, with a few stickers, and the right flashlight, or a some flat LED lights you can immediately hit the course at night and have a lot of fun.

Disc Golf Basket Lights

Owning a luminous disc is beneficial, yet it only partially solves the visibility issue in disc golf after dark. For an optimal nocturnal playing experience, it is equally crucial to illuminate the target.
There are numerous methods for lighting up a disc golf basket. A popular and economical approach is to attach glow sticks to each basket on the course. Although cost-effective, opting for lights made specifically for disc golf baskets can enhance the experience even further.

Check out our selection of disc golf basket lights here.

Be sure to get out there and try a round of glow-in-the-dark disc golf! You’ll be glad you did! Let us know what you recommend for night rounds in the comments. We’d love to know!

Disc Golf Weight Explained – Choosing the Best Disc Weight

Disc Golf Disc Weights

Why Weight Matters in Disc Golf

When it comes to choosing the best disc golf disc, getting the right weight makes a difference as the weight of a disc affects it’s speed, stability and the way it will fly. Understanding this relationship can provide a significant advantage in the discs you choose to purchase and throw on the course.

Release Velocity and it’s Relationship to Distance

The faster you’re able to throw the disc, the more potential it will have to get more distance. This provides a relationship between the release velocity of a throw and the distance the disc travels.
According to Best Disc Golf discs Youtube, for every additional mile per hour in speed at release, there is an average increase of 7.2 feet in distance. So the easiest way to get more “arm speed” and throw faster is by increasing your release velocity with lighter weight discs.
Research shows that reducing the disc weight can lead to an increase in throw speed. For instance, shaving off 20 grams from a disc’s weight can enhance the speed by 6.5 miles per hour. Theoretically, this could result in an impressive gain of 47 feet in distance.

Lighter Discs for Big Distance

The potential of lighter discs isn’t merely theoretical. For disc golf distance competitions, world records have been set with light weight discs weighing under 160 grams. This underscores the point that lighter discs, when thrown correctly, can achieve astounding distances. For me personally, I can most easily get full flight and maximum distance with a 149 gram Pharaoh.

Disc Stability Also Matters

While light weight discs have potential for more distance, the flight dynamics of the disc can also change. Lighter discs, by their nature, tend to exhibit more turnover, which can affect the intended flight path. To counter this tendency, it might be advantageous to choose a more stable driver or increase the weight. Increased stability allows for more consistent flight paths.
While the weight of the disc may not actually affect the discs stability, the fact that you are able to throw light weight discs faster will affect it’s stability.

Factoring in Wind Conditions

While the distance advantages of lighter discs are clear, the reality is that most disc golf rounds are not played in ideal wind conditions. Wind plays a significant role in the behavior of a disc in flight. In windy situations, a heavier disc might offer a distinct advantage. The added weight can counteract wind resistance, providing a straighter throw and yielding more consistent results.
Now that you understand a little bit more about more about how disc weight affects the flight, how do you know which to choose? Some discs listed on our website have weight variations that range 40-50 grams. Other molds have only a 2-3 gram variation in options. Pro Disc Golfer throwing max weight disc

Which Weight to Choose?

With a lot of disc golfers trying out popular discs by different brands, we thought that we would address the questions of disc weight. For some players, the weight of the disc is not particularly important as long as it flies the way that they want it to. But for other players, the disc weight is very important since they prefer the performance of heavier discs, or desire the easier distance that may come with lighter discs, etc.

Your weight choice should primarily depend on the disc you are purchasing and what you intend to use that disc for.

Choosing Weight for Putters and Midrange Discs

Because the objective and putter and midrange discs is not distance but control, in most instances you should choose heavier, near max weight discs.

Disc Golf Putter Weights

Most disc golf putters have a max weight of 173-175grams. Personally, I like a putter around the 170-172 gram range, it really probably doesn’t make much of a difference, but psychologically in my mind that “lighter” putter will glide just a little bit more. When it comes to making putts, it’s really all about confidence.

Midrange Disc Weights

Some Midrange Discs have wider diameters, and thus the PDGA allows for heavier max weights. Large diameter mids like the Buzzz and Roc3 have max weights of up to 180 grams.

If you’re looking for something very overstable, you probably want a heavier disc, or at least something in the 165g plus weight range. If you want something that will glide a little bit more and not fall to the ground as fast, consider something lighter than mid weight for that mold.

Best Weight for Disc Golf Drivers

Disc golf drivers and their sharp rims usually have a maximum weight of 175 grams or less.

When it comes to choosing drivers, this is when the weight ranges really matters. The reality is that you will probably want a variety of different weights depending on your intended use for the driver. If you’re looking for big distance, use a lighter disc.

While I can’t usually tell the difference between a 170 gram, and a 173 gram disc, there is a noticeable difference between max weigh drivers and those in the 160’s. When a disc golf driver get’s in the 150’s or lower weight range, that is when there is a noticeable difference in the speed you are able to throw the disc and the way that it will fly.

If you have a tendency to “turn over” your disc, you probably want to stay away from light weight drivers as the heavier varieties will provide more consistency.

Some disc golfers choose to throw light weight but very overstable discs to get the best of both velocity and stability.

The real way to choose the right disc weight for you is simply to try your favorite driver in a number of different weight ranges to see which ones perform best for you in varying situations.

Lighter Weights for Beginners

Because new disc golfers do not have the arm speed to get a full flight out of disc, the best discs for beginners are usually light weight discs, at least in terms of drivers. Mid weight midrange discs are also recommended for newer players.

Sometimes factory second blemishes make x-out discs lighter than the non x-out version, so a factory second version is a way to get a lighter disc in the mold you are looking at.

Are the Weights Listed on Disc Golf Discs Accurate?

Here at Infinite Discs, we try to represent each disc as accurately as possible on our website by including a photo and the details for each one. We decided years ago that we would trust the manufacturers when it comes to indicating the weight of their discs.

Most major disc manufacturers take the time to weigh the discs as they come out of the mold and painstakingly mark those weights in ink, with stickers, or embossed on the bottom of each disc. We trust that they have a well-established procedure for accurately weighing those discs as part of their manufacturing process.

WHY DON’T WE WEIGH THE DISCS at Infinite Discs?

Because we’ve chosen to trust the disc manufacturers to represent their products accurately and according to their own standards, we do not take the extra time to weigh each disc as we add them into our online inventory. Here at Infinite Discs, we currently have three different digital scales which we use to weigh packages as we ship them. When used to weigh individual discs, we can lay the same disc on each of those three scales and get results that may differ a gram or two from one scale to the next or from the weight indicated on the disc. So which of those scales is correct?

We have heard the argument that “gravity is the same everywhere,” and that is correct. While gravity may not change, the calibration of different scales might differ. While we do not own the most top-of-the-line digital scales, we have noticed that there can be differences between them, so we don’t feel that we should automatically judge a disc’s factory weight to be wrong if it differs slightly from what one of our scales might say.

The same 173-174 Kong on another one of our digital scales.

Let’s assume for a moment that we receive a disc marked as 175g by the factory, using their procedures. Then we weigh the disc and find that our scale says 174g or maybe 176g. We feel strongly that it is not our place to then scratch out the factory weight and indicate our own results on the disc. We also don’t feel that we should list the disc on our website with a weight that is different than the factory results– the purchaser of the disc would receive it, see that our advertised weight doesn’t match what is marked on the disc and feel deceived. They might weigh the disc themselves and find a result of 173g on their own scale and feel that both we and the factory were wrong. Thus, we stick with what the factory says and don’t alter the disc or the weight information provided. That way, the manufacturer becomes the ultimate authority for the disc that they produced.

DIFFERENT BRANDS AND THEIR WEIGHT DESIGNATIONS

We’ve seen a lot of players move from one brand to another when purchasing discs. We’d like to address another important consideration when it comes to the procedures of those different brands. Innova, for example, typically marks their weights to the precise gram by writing the weight on the bottom of the disc in ink. Players who throw Innova or discs by other brands that use a similar procedure are able to pick the exact weight that they feel is perfect for them.

However, Discraft has not traditionally marked each disc to the gram. They instead choose to put a sticker on their discs that indicates a weight range. For example, they’ll put a sticker on a disc that says 170 – 172. That way, they are acknowledging that there will be some variation in weight for the discs produced in that batch. Other discs may be lighter and marked with weight stickers like 167 – 169, or heavier with 177+ (typical for mid-range discs like the Buzzz). Again, we assume that their range is accurate, but can’t promise that when weighed on somebody’s personal scale that it won’t fall a gram above or below the range that Discraft indicated.

When we list discs by companies that use a weight range on a sticker, we have chosen to be consistent in our data entry practices by simply listing the low number on that sticker. That is because our data entry system does not allow for a range, but wants a single number. Thus, a disc marked as 170 – 172 will be listed as 170.  A disc with a sticker saying 173 – 175 will be listed as 173.  The “max weight” for a Discraft driver would typically be listed as 173, but could actually weigh on the higher end of that range.

Other brands that use weight ranges include DGA, Viking Discs, Yikun Discs, and the new Active Baseline series of discs from Discmania (not individually weighed, but sold in a weight range).

WHAT IF THE WEIGHT IS JUST PLAIN WRONG?

While we’d like to believe that we live in a world where mistakes don’t happen, that is simply not a reality. While taking photos and adding thousands of discs per week onto our website, it is possible that some busy, tired employee here at Infinite Discs may type a weight in incorrectly. Usually we catch that error before the disc ships and we contact the buyer to make sure that they get a weight that they want. If the disc slips past another employee at the shipping station and the buyer receives a disc that has a factory weight that is different than what we entered, then we take care of the problem.

If we have entered the disc weight according the factory-marked weight, as indicated above, but the buyer believes it is still inaccurate or marked incorrectly, then we’re still happy to help the best we can, knowing that some busy, tired employee at the factory may have made a mistake. After all, nobody is perfect, and mistakes are always possible. We just want to clarify that we are doing the best we can to represent discs on our website exactly as the factory specified.

In the end, when disc weight becomes a hot topic of discussion or a complaint, we often find ourselves wondering if that gram or two was really going to make a difference in the player’s game. Would a 174g disc perform that much worse for an average player who claims that they absolutely must have a 175g disc? That’s an argument to be settled elsewhere. As disc connoisseurs, we can attest that here at Infinite Discs we have discs in our bags that straddle a lot of weight ranges, and they fly as well as we can throw them.

We hope that this information has been helpful in understand a little bit more about disc weights and how they effect flight. We hope you better understand how brands mark the weight of their discs, and how we at Infinite Discs work with those brands and trust in those manufacturers to indicate the weight of their discs so that our buyers can make an informed purchasing decision.

The 100 Best-Selling Discs at Infinite Discs in 2021

Here is a year-end report of the 2021 best-selling discs at Infinite Discs. This tally of course only counts the discs sold through the Infinite Discs retail website. It is not total market tally of discs manufactured or sold through all sources.

We could only sell the discs that were available to us through the manufacturers. Obviously, we can’t tally discs that “would have sold if we’d had them in stock.” This is simply a chart based on what we sold because we had them.

The DESTROYER by Innova held tight in the #1 spot for 2021, followed by the ZONE by Discraft. Other small brands made the list as they claw their way into the disc golf market. We’re always excited to see the newer disc lines that make a splash each year.

Here is a charted look of those top 100.

We look forward to seeing how things change up in 2022. Will the availability of popular discs be better? If certain discs were available regularly, it would be interesting to see how the sales shuffle. It will also be fun to see which of the newer brands continues to push its way onto and upward on the chart.

The Top-Selling Brands at Infinite Discs in 2021

Infinite Discs has always strived to keep discs from all disc golf brands and manufacturers in stock on our retail website. As some brands are discontinued or the supply becomes slim, those brands can disappear from our sales figures for long periods. Other new brands jump into the market and begin to show their strength with time. It is always fun after each year to pull up the count of the discs sold through our retail site to measure the growth of all the brands that we carried.

Here is a look at how those brands all measured up against one another for the year 2021. Please keep in mind that these sales statistics ONLY represent retail sales through Infinite Discs. It does not account for sales through other retailers and may not represent the entire disc golf marketplace. Plus, many brands have their own retail outlets in addition to their wholesale operations, and those sales may account for a large portion of the total sales for those particular brands and would not be calculated here.

The Infinite Discs brand also has inflated numbers through our retail site simply because we are traditionally known as a kay retail source for our own brand. Throughout all of 2021, Infinite Discs brand was also distributed to other retailers, both online and brick-and-mortar, but no wholesale numbers are reflected in this disc count. Again, this is only retail sales through Infinite Discs.

Charting the Sales

Innova remained the top-selling brand, as it has since Infinite Discs began in 2012. Discraft continues to build momentum, taking a strong #2 position. With the ups and downs of the supply chain in 2021, it is hard to know how the numbers would have looked if the most popular discs had been readily available at all times of the year. However, many popular discs went through repeated cycles where they would arrive, immediately sell out, then be missing from inventory for weeks or months before the next restock. The Infinite Discs brand of discs made a sharp move toward the top, though sales are particularly strong for that brand since this is a chart of sales through Infinite Discs’ own website.

New Brands Making Moves

The number of small brands on the list continues to grow. We’re excited about that. Here are some brands that were recently created and made impressive moves on the chart:

Thought Space Athletics at #10 with their ultra-artistic, high-quality discs

Dino Discs at #11 with their line of discs for kids

Divergent Discs at #18 with their line focused on recreational players

Elevation Disc Golf at #19 with two silicone rubber discs launched in 2021

EV7 at #23 with their putters-only manufacturing approach

What Will 2022 Bring?

We’re excited to watch the disc sales in 2022 and see how things shuffle and move around. It should be particularly interesting to watch as we’ve seen a lot of professional players change brands for the new year. How will the sales for those brands be affected by the shuffle in sponsorships?

Feel free to leave your comments predicting the ups and downs of disc brands in 2022.

You can probably see a lot of blue on the chart, with a strong representation by Discraft in October, but also a lot of Infinite Discs models hitting the top 50. October is typically a slower month when it comes to disc sales, so it is interesting to see some of the brands that broke into the top 50 with new discs heading into the colder months. RPM hit the chart with the Pekapeka release, Cheengz with the Zingback, and Divergent held strong with the Alpas rubber disc.

Here is a look at how many times the different brands were in this month’s chart:

That’s your run-down for last month’s disc sales at Infinite Discs. Thanks for watching, and we hope you enjoy these charts and insights into the movements of the disc market as we see them. We’ll keep bringing you the Top 50 best-sellers every month, plus other sales data from time to time.

For now, we’re discontinuing the guessing game for each month, since interest has dropped in placing guesses. Thanks!

There were quite a few restocks of Infinite Discs molds last month and that helped to boost discs like the CHARIOT to the #1 and #2 spots, since it had not been available for a long time. The RUIN also came back in stock after a long wait, along with the Exodus and Maya. Many popular molds by Innova and Discraft made the rounds on the charts, moving up and down according to availability and supply.

The Elevation Disc Golf KOI had a very strong debut at #3 with the Divergent Discs ALPAS close behind in the #4 spot, showing a growing interest in rubber putt-and-approach discs. The APOLLO mid-range from the new brand, Alfa Disc Golf, also touched the top 50.

Here is a look at how many spots the different brands took last month:

The Guessing Game

Every month you’ll be able to place your guess for a certain spot on the chart for the next month. The first person to guess the disc and plastic type correctly for the named chart position will win a $20 gift card for the Infinite Discs online store.

— This month we had asked for a guess of the #5 spot. We messed up on the listing and comments were not able to be posted most of the month. Sorry about that! The Signature Envy was the winner there, but nobody guessed it. Our bad! We’ve got it right for this month.

PLACE A GUESS for next month. If you can by the first to guess the #6 spot for OCTOBER, then you can be a winner. Leave your guess in the comments on this blog. Thanks!
