Fastest Growing Disc Golf Brands of 2023

Lone Star Disc Fast Growing Sponsor 2023

2023 is over and we’re having some fun looking at the numbers. Overall, our direct retail sales were down significantly in 2023 compared with 2022, but there are some disc golf brands that saw an increase in sales.

These were the fastest growing disc golf brands of 2023:

Brand
2023 Sales Growth
ABC 152.75%
Clash Discs 119.47%
Doomsday Discs 73.57%
Goliath Discs 69.44%
Kestrel 64.10%
Disc Golf UK 43.33%
Black Zombie 40.63%
Lone Star Disc 29.17%
XCom 28.51%
Axiom 15.26%
Latitude 64 7.12%
Guru Disc Golf 5.74%
MVP 4.47%
Birdie Disc Golf Supply 0.25%

Most of these brands are relatively small, so an increase from 100 to 152 discs sold isn’t particularly remarkable. ABC Discs primarily increased in sales because, well a few of their molds actually existed and were available for in 2023 when only one did in 2022.

Some major disc golf brands did experience sales growth even during a market downturn.

MVP’s Growth in Market Share

MVP and Axiom discs saw significant increases in 2023. Our Axiom sales increased by 15% and MVP grew by 4.5%. This growth is all the more impressive considering that, for a large part of the year, their most popular molds, especially the best-selling MVP Glitch, were often out of stock. The MVP family of disc brands really is the only brand that we still cannot keep in stock at will. Every time we attempt to make a restock order, the MVP order form remains very limited, and their fulfillment is not exactly next day.

The signing of Simon Lizotte last season appears to have been a hugely successful decision. All of the Simon Line discs have performed remarkably well this year, and we even had people camping out in front of Infinite Discs in hopes of getting one of our limited edition Timelapse discs.

MVP hype is the real deal right now, especially with so much competition in disc golf manufacturing. The combination of unique discs using Gyro Technology, along with the notable signing of the most popular professional disc golfer in the world, seems to have created a perfect storm of marketing excitement. Additionally, the most exciting and improbable win in the history of the disc golf World Championship, achieved by MVP-sponsored player James Conrad, certainly doesn’t hurt the brand.

These were the top-selling MVP and Axiom Discs of 2023.

Disc Golf Brands to Watch in 2024

In terms of the fastest-growing brands, Clash and Doomsday are definitely ones to watch as they saw the largest jump in sales in 2023.

Clash Discs

Clash Discs implemented an aggressive marketing strategy, including major sponsorships of professional disc golfers, tournaments, and advertising campaigns. Despite being one of the priciest brands in disc golf, their investment appears to have been worthwhile. Clash now boasts a full line of discs and has introduced several limited edition sets and completely unique double-mold plastic variations exclusive to this brand. Our Clash sells (on discs alone and not including any of the sets) more than doubled in 2023 where we saw a 119% increase.

It remains to be seen whether this trend will continue or if the Clash hype was just a temporary fad. It appears that Clash is reducing its sponsorships of professional players this year. Although Clash Discs are indeed premium and of the highest quality, it is uncertain whether buyers will continue to choose this brand when they can purchase discs from other brands at a significantly lower cost.

Doomsday Discs

With their distinctive apocalyptic branding, unique disc designs, and efforts to foster a disc golf community, Doomsday experienced significant growth in 2023. They introduced a variety of new molds across their disc lines produced worldwide and now boast 24 different discs either announced or in production. Doomsday offers an intriguing selection of unconventional “weird” discs that attract attention to the brand, as well as a stable array of affordable, mainstay discs for regular play. With their unique offerings, Doomsday’s sales impressively increased by 73% in 2023!

Similar to Clash, a large part of Doomsday’s growth stemmed from the addition of many new discs to their lineup. As the pace of introducing new discs eventually slows, it will be interesting to see if Doomsday’s popularity continues, or if the brand is attracting mainly one-time customers more interested in experimenting with their unique disc designs.

Lone Star Discs

Lone Star was our fastest growing brand of 2022. They started 2023 strongly but experienced a slight decline towards the middle of the year. They have now become one of the larger brands in disc golf, offering a full line of discs with 38 different Lonestar molds available for sale.

On the year, Lone Star was our #8 selling brand overall. This graph shows Lone Star’s sales ranks among all disc golf brands we sell by month in 2023.

Lone Star Sales Rank

Their aggressive “team” growth at the end of 2022 undoubtedly had an impact, but it seems that their PR image has also suffered as a result. Many believe that by allowing almost anyone to join, that the costs for team members outweigh the benefits of sponsorship. Additionally, their professional team has taken a hit with the departure of key players such as Emerson Keith, Chandler Kramer, and Lisa Fajkus, who have moved on to other sponsors.

Despite the claims in their commercials, there have been numerous complaints about the quality and consistency of Lone Star’s plastic production. This negative PR has slowed the rapid growth we saw from Lone Star in 2022. It appears that Lone Star may have grown a little too quickly.

Latitude 64

Latitude 64 also demonstrated impressive sales growth of 7.12%. This is notable with as big as a brand as Latitude 64 already is and as much market share that they have. The outstanding performance of Kristin Tattar, the premium plastic lines, and it’s reputation as the most professional disc golf manufacturer undoubtedly played a crucial role in maintaining the prominence of this major disc golf brand.

In the past Dynamic Discs has been our top selling trilogy brand but this year, Latitude 64 regained the top spot and was our 6th best selling brand overall.

Conclusion

Disc golf’s landscape is always shifting, shaped by its pro scene and the strong opinions of players and fans alike. The influence of the professional scene, sponsored players, and grassroots brand perception is more pronounced in disc golf than in almost any other industry.

Today we spotlight the disc golf brands that surged in 2023, but keep your eyes peeled for a potential shake-up as 2024 unfolds. Will the new sponsorships of Gannon Buhr and Eagle McMahon catalyze significant growth for their respective sponsors, or will 2024 witness minimal shifts in the disc golf industry? Time alone will reveal the outcome.

New Brighter Glowing Plastic for Innova Manufactured Discs

Glow in the dark discs

Innova recently announced a transition to a new, more effective glow solution for their glow-in-the-dark discs, promising even brighter illumination. This development is particularly exciting for those who enjoy playing disc golf at night.

Innova claims that the reason for this change is because “Our glow discs are some of our best feeling and performing flyers in the lineup, but are currently not glowing well enough to meet our customers’ needs and our standards.”

While Innova’s current glow plastic performs adequately for night games, especially when recharged with a UV flashlight before each hole, it falls short when compared to the glow offered by Kastaplast and MVP.

The Good and Bad of Brighter Glow

The upgrade means that Innova’s glow-in-the-dark plastic variants will be better suited for night play. However, the downside is the increased cost of this superior glowing plastic, leading to a slight price hike for Innova glow discs.

This might be disappointing for those who favor glow plastic mainly for its aesthetics and texture, particularly since most disc golfers use them  primarily during daytime rounds when the glow-in-the-dark feature is redundant.Glow in the Dark Disc golf Discs

What does this mean for Infinite Discs Line?

Infinite Discs is well known for our glow disc variants, particularly the Metal Flake Color Glow line. Since Innova manufactures our discs, the phase-out of the current, less expensive glow plastic means that future Infinite Discs will also adopt the trend of brighter glow, starting with new releases in the spring of 2024.

Will the New Brighter Glow Discs be marked differently?

Yes, there will be a distinction. Initially, we plan to clearly mark runs featuring the new, brighter glow plastic.

Older glow discs still in stock will be labeled as “Old Glow” plastic and sold at reduced prices.

Eventually, the new brighter glow will become the standard for all Infinite Line discs. Customers will recognize that Infinite Glow plastics are exceptionally luminous and ideal for night play.

Black Friday FAQ’s

Why does your Black Friday sales week spread out among so many days?

There are a few reasons that we need to structure are sales this way. The primary reason is to keep our website functioning. By spreading out the different special drops and sales among the hottest disc golf brands, we spread out our server load. In addition to our limited website capacity, this also helps our shipping crew not get too far behind.

How long will shipping take?

We will be having our shipping stations working extra hours on Friday and Saturday, and will do all we can to get your black Friday purchases shipped in a timely manner. Our shipping focus will be on expedited orders, and we will do our best to get shipping upgrades sent out the same  or next business day. As for other orders, we will do our best to pull, pack, and ship them out as soon as possible.

The major mail carriers also anticipate high shipping volume for the weekend, but with increased demand there is also more potential for errors and delayed packages. If you are really anxious to get your new Cyber week discs, then we recommend the expedited shipping upgrade during this busy time.

We will be unable to accommodate combined shipping requests for multiple orders at this time due to the high volume of sales. Please anticipate paying for shipping multiple times, or plan to make your order all at once.

What time do the new releases drop?

New releases drop at midnight Eastern time each night, so if you live in California, the next day’s Black Friday releases are active at 9 PM.

New Disc Golf Discs of 2023

Ten years ago in 2013, when Paul McBeth was a 2-time World Champion, the PDGA approved 75 new molds. Cut to 2023 when the PDGA approved molds from 78 different brands!

So far this year, 256 different molds have been approved (including retooled molds). That eclipses last year’s record of 223, and we still have more than a month left in the year!

Check out the newest molds from lots of different brands. Then answer some questions at the end of the list for your chance to win some Infinite Discs Gift Cards!

Above Ground Level

The California brand continues to grow and expand their lineup. This year they added a putter that looks to be straight flying and shapable.

Axiom Discs

Axiom will be rolling out molds for the new Simon Line of discs. The limited edition prototype Time-Lapses sold out quickly. The The Time-Lapse was the first disc in the Simon Line, and the Pixel is the second.

Birdie

Birdie Disc Golf Supply added a midrange and a high-speed driver to their lineup in 2023. The Reach will be a speed 12 disc with popular flight numbers.

Black Zombie Disc Golf

Black Zombie continues with their mission to conquer baskets around the world, adding a control driver to their arsenal.

Clash Discs

Although Clash is a young company, they are constantly adding tasty discs to their growing smorgasbord of molds. That includes every type of disc.

Disc Golf Association

DGA is a well-established name in the world of discs golf. Yet they are still coming up with new discs. The Avalanche is an overstable control driver that will sail through a headwind like it’s a calm day.

Discmania

Discmania new offerings include retooled former molds and a new mold.

Discraft

Discraft gave their popular Zone a little more beef with the new Zone OS. They also added a control driver, the Cicada.

Disctroyer

The Estonian company, Disctroyer, got approved for the sixth disc. The new mold appears to be an overstable midrange.

Doomsday Discs

Doomsday Discs is another new disc golf brand that resulted from the pandemic boom. Last year Doomsday introduced 8 different PDGA approved Molds as well as a few that are not nor ever will be approved for PDGA tournament play.

The first new Doomsday Disc, the bunker buster, is like something you have never seen before. It is an ultra understable wide diameter driver. Think Condor size, but with a Leopard rim.
New Doomsday Discs this year include:

Dynamic Discs

Dynamic is continuing to expand their line and support Ricky Wysocki with some awesome discs in 2023.

Elevation Disc Golf

Elevation Disc Golf is expanding their line of super soft rubber discs with what appears to be a new fairway driver, the Gecko.

Finish Line Discs

Finish Line Discs saw immediate success last year with the introduction of their first disc the ERA. Late in 2022 they also introduced the new Supra midrange. They have plans of releasing 5 new discs in 2023 beginning with the Pace Putter in February.

Full Turn Discs

Full Turn Discs, a company out of Branson Missouri who partners with Prodiscus to make their own line, will be releasing a new midrange called the Glide in 2023.

Gateway Disc Sports

Gateway has some new discs this year, and some variations of existing molds. The new molds are all high-speed drivers.

Goliath Discs

Located in Iowa, this Christian-based brand had a big year for new discs, with seven additional molds now in their lineup.

Hooligan Discs

This young brand got a couple more molds approved this year. We are looking forward to testing them out.

Infinite Discs

We started selling our own molds several years ago, and our disc offerings haven’t slowed down. We added several more new Infinite molds to our lineup, including control drivers, a distance driver, and a putter.

Innova

The #1 Manufacturer of Disc golf already has just about every possible disc you can think of, yet Innova still manages to come out with a few new molds each year. Their newest release the Charger is a high speed driver described as a mix of the Destroyer and Shryke (two of their best selling drivers). This disc has already been released and is now available.

Jester Disc Golf

Jester disc golf is a new brand that released three new molds this year. Their ‘Peace and Love’ theme is something the world could use right now!

Kastaplast

With a name that translates to “throw plastic”, Kastaplast continues to produce some of the best plastics in the industry. They had several new molds approved this year, including a variation of one of their popular discs, the Berg.

Loft  Discs

This Danish brand added a couple new molds to their library of premium discs.

Legacy Discs

After a relatively long break in new mold releases, the Legacy Disc Rebel was approved by the PDGA recently and will likely be released sometime in 2023.

Lonestar Discs

No other disc golf manufacturer has introduced so many discs in such a short period of time. In 2022 alone Lone Star introduced 22 new disc molds! This rapid growth of the Lone Star line doesn’t seem to be slowing with their increase of sponsored players.

Millennium Golf Discs

A midrange and control driver will be the next molds offered by Millennium.

Mint Discs

Mint Discs is just a few years old now, and they continue to create new molds for their brand. This year they got three new molds approved.

Momentum Discs AB

A couple new putters were added to Momentum‘s list of molds available. That brings their total to five molds.

MVP Disc Sports

Already well established in the disc golf world, MVP still creates new molds for overmold fans around the world. The Trail and Detour are James Conrad series discs.

Neptune Discs

A new company out of Virginia, Neptune released their first three molds this year: a putter, a midrange and a control driver.

Osuma Disc

Headquartered in Finland, Osuma Disc is another brand that just started selling discs, and got all of their available molds approved this year.

Pie Pan Discs

Pie Pan is a new disc manufacturer out of Ohio that Infinite Discs just discovered. We first started selling their discs this year.

Premier Discs

Premier Discs is another new disc golf brand. Their new fairway driver the War Bear was recently PDGA approved.

Prodigy Disc

Prodigy is known to support some of the top pros, and their two approved discs this year have those pro fingerprints all over them. World Champion Isaac Robinson helped design the Archive, while Kevin Jones collaborated on the Feedback

Prodiscus

Prodiscus has announced their first new release in several years with the PDGA approval of the Empire.

Reptilian Disc Golf

Two new discs from Reptilian were approved and are awaiting manufacture.

RPM Discs/Disc Golf Aotearoa

Out of New Zealand, RPM has local wildlife themed molds. This year they created a new high-speed driver and a retooled midrange

Sacred Discs

Getting its entire lineup approved this year, Sacred Discs infuses their product line with uplifting essences of plants and minerals.

Streamline Discs

Part of the MVP family, Streamline discs don’t have the overmold technology that MVP and Axiom are famous for. Instead, they create discs with amazing plastic and a variety of flights.

Terminal Velocity

The second disc in the Terminal Velocity Line is a driver called the Cervini. This disc was PDGA approved January 9th, and we expect a 2023 retail release.

Thought Space Athletics

TSA is known for the amazing stamps that adorn their molds. They have added two more molds this year that are approved, but unreleased.

Trash Panda Disc Golf

Jesse from Trash Panda had a goal and a dream: He wanted to make a disc out of recycled plastic, which was also completely recyclable. It took a couple years, but he achieved his goal. Last year Trash Panda released the Inner Core, this year they released the Dune. Congrats!

Wild Discs

Wild Discs continues to expand their line and the manufacturers they use for their brand. New Wild releases for 2023 include:

Wing It Discs

Up and coming brand Wing It Discs will add a second disc to their arsenal early this year.  It appears it will be a new high speed Driver.

Frolf Discs – Best FRisbee gOLF Discs

Frolf Discs

You probably found this page because you’ve played a round of frolf or two, or three, and are ready to get your own frisbee golf discs.

What does Frolf mean?

The word frolf simply combines the first two letters from FRisbee and the last three from gOLF. Frolf simply means playing a golf like game with a frisbee or disc. Some people also abbreviate this even more and call the game FOLF.

There are primarily two types of frisbee golfers: those who play occasionally and refer to the flying discs as “frisbees” or “frolf discs,” and hard core players who refer to these objects only as “discs.” Now, the terminology varies by location, years playing, etc., but here is my basic run down of the difference between frolfers and hard core disc golfers.

Difference Between Frolfers and Disc Golfers

Disc Golfers Frolfers
Use the terminology Frisbee Golf No Yes
Own Multiple Discs Yes Not Usually
Use Discs Not Designed for Disc Golf Never Sometimes
Don’t Own any Discs Never Sometimes
Spend Hours Learning Proper Form Sometimes What is That?
Play Multiple Courses Yes Frisbee Golf has courses?
Refer to the “Basket” as the Goal No Sometimes
Play in Tournaments Yes
Is playing with my friends a tournament?
Understand Disc Golf Flight Numbers Yes No
Understand Disc Stability Yes Is that like different weights?
Know of multiple disc golf brands Yes
There are different disc golf brands!
Can make a disc hyzer flip Yes Frisbee Golf discs turn right!
Throw Less than 200 Feet in Total Distance Usually Occasionally
Watch Professional Disc Golf Yes People play disc golf for money!
Consider Frolf a Cuss Word Yes No
Shop at Infinite Discs Yes Starting Today..

Frolfers use one to three discs per round, sometimes actual Frisbees not designed specifically for disc golf, and can rarely throw more than 200 feet. Frolf Discs include Ultimate Frisbees, aerobies, or even the cheap-o plastic frisbees you get at a parade.

While frolf is sometimes played on actual courses with chain filled baskets, it is also played using trees, poles, or other objects as targets. Frolf is a recreational activity, a time out with friends and family and is not primarily a competitive activity. Sure, there may be some competition, but there is no training or practicing. There is actually a website devoted to frolf and its true definition.

Frolfers do not know disc golf terminology are not concerned about technique, form, foot faults, or following the rules. In fact, they likely don’t even know what good form is, or that there even is a disc golf form. And there are official rules to disc golf? But aren’t you just throwing frisbees?

But… It happens all the time. Frolf is so fun, maybe you were the best at your family reunion and you’re ready to play it some more. If you’re ready to buy your own discs designed exclusively for disc golf, then you might be advancing to that of a disc golfer.

Hard Core Disc Golfers own literally dozens of discs in many different plastic variations and blends. These players have huge backpacks or carts they use to haul around their discs made by companies such as Innova, Discraft, and Latitude 64. These disc golfers can throw their distance drivers 300, 400, and sometimes even 500+ feet!

As a good frolfer, I thought I could throw a frisbee pretty hard until I went to a disc golf league and started playing with with real hard core disc golfers.

Hard core disc golfers shun the word frolf, folf, and frisbee golf, and are likely to take offense if you use one of these f-words.

Is it Okay to use the term Frolf?

Yes. But ONLY if you are not at a disc golf league, tournament, or around people who consider this term offensive to their beloved sport. If you’ve decided that you are going to become a disc golfer, then you should try your best to move the f word out of your vocabulary.

Best Discs for Frolfers

There are literally hundreds of different frisbee golf discs available in dozens of plastic varieties. The reality is that most discs made specifically for disc golf are not suitable for frolfers. Throwing “high-speed overstable discs” will simply be frustrating for a player trying to learn the basics game.

Our site has several tools to help golfers find the absolute best frolf discs.

1. Sort by discs that are recommended for beginners.

Using our “find the perfect disc” feature, one of the options is, “player skill level.” By selecting beginner, you’ll be able to see different putters, midrange discs, and drivers, that will help improve performance for a round of frolf and make it more fun. Click this link for a recommendation of the best frolf discs for beginners.

2. Beginner Frisbee Golf Sets

Frolf Starter SetsOne of the best way to get good golf discs for beginners, at an excellent price, is to purchase beginner sets. We offer several different variations of starter sets from the leading disc manufacturers. Here is the link to all of the beginner sets that we sell.

Warning for buying disc golf sets on the internet: Be very careful when buying disc golf sets on Amazon, E-Bay, and Walmart. Many of the discs in these sets are complete garbage made by Chinese manufacturers who no nothing about disc flight or disc golf. These discs are not even fit for the most casual frolfers. Here is our list of disc golf sets frolfers should avoid at all costs:

3. Our Most recommended for beginners pages.

Our website has thousands of disc golf reviews. Every time a player reviews a disc, they are asked to rate how “beginner friendly” the disc is.

Those rated most “beginner friendly” appear at the top of each page.

4. Beginners Guide to Buying Golf Discs

Our beginners guide to buying frisbee golf discs goes over some of the basics of disc golf flight, as well as tips to help navigate our site. This will help you to understand what the many different disc golf options mean, like the differences between plastic types, disc weights, and the best ways to get cheap frisbees. Read the beginners guide here.

Cheap Frisbee Golf Discs

If you’re looking for cheap, inexpensive discs, then you have also come to the right place. We offer the best price for frisbee golf discs. For even lower prices on quality plastic, be sure to check out our “on-sale discs” page.

While there are many different manufacturers and models of disc golf discs, the biggest key to determine which discs are inexpensive has to do with the plastic type. The cheapest frolf discs available come in an inexpensive plastic that isn’t very durable.

For most frolfers, these inexpensive discs work just fine and fly well enough, even when they are “broken in” a little and have a few dings. If you plan to get into competitive disc golf, we don’t recommend base plastic discs, but if you know you will always be a recreational frolfer, these discs will work just fine. Simply sort by price for any disc model you look at.

The brands that have the cheapest disc golf plastics include:

On Sale Selection

Every week on Wednesday we select a new batch of products to put on sale. These products are typically on sale because we are overstocked on these molds (our bag) or just have something special we want to promote. (You’ll find we like promoting the Infinite Discs line, a lot). These are GREAT Discs and at GREAT prices.

Disc Golf Sets, X-Outs and Misprints

Another great way to get inexpensive discs is buy purchasing x-outs, misprints, and disc golf sets.

X-Outs – X-Outs also known as factory seconds are manufactured discs that do not meet the manufacturers quality standards. These discs often have coloring issues or imperfections in the plastic. The imperfections should not effect the intended flight of the disc, but even if they do, these discs are still adequate for the casual frolf round. You can buy base plastic X-Out discs for less than $6 per disc.

Misprints – Like X-Outs, misprints are cheaper discs because something went wrong at the disc golf factory. The difference between x-outs and misprints is that the error with misprints happened during the hot stamping process (where they put the disc name and logo on the disc). With misprints, you will get the intended flight of the disc as the only error is with the visual display.

Mystery BoxPackage Sets – Package sets allow you to save money on discs through bundle savings. There are a variety of different bulk sets including starter sets (which typically include 3 discs for beginners) and Mystery Boxes. Mystery Boxes typically consist of large quantities of discount discs. The catch with mystery boxes is that you don’t know what discs you are going to get. If you don’t know what discs you want, this is a perfect way to get new frolf discs. You can even purchase a large mystery deals box and share the discs with a group of friends.

What impact does a World Championship have for a disc golf brand?

Prodigy Pros Celebrate Isaac Robinsons Win

With Isaac Robinson recently winning the PDGA Disc Golf World Championships, I was curious to see if we would see an impact on Prodigy Disc sales. I ran the numbers to see if there was any kind of noticeable difference for Prodigy sales during, and immediately following the PDGA World Championships.

Prodigy sales by week during Worlds

Analyzing sales data from August and September reveals a noteworthy trend. During and immediately following Robinson’s World Championship win, there is a noticeable increase in the sales percentage of Prodigy Discs. This percentage more than doubled in comparison to the days preceding the World championships. For the week of August 17th – August 24th Prodigy sales accounted for just 2.04% of all InfiniteDiscs.com disc sales.

On September 3rd, Prodigy Discs accounted for 4.87% of total InfiniteDiscs.com disc sales, marking a substantial uptick from the earlier weeks. This surge continued into the week following the World Championships, with Prodigy Discs maintaining an average sales percentage of approximately 5.89% from September 8th to September 14th.

Percentage of Prodigy Sales by Day

However, it’s essential to put this increase in context. The Prodigy Disc sales surge cannot be solely contributed to the World Championship win. There was a surge in Prodigy sales during the World Championships, before the outcome and winner was determined.

Prodigy has consistently emphasized its marketing efforts through professional players. It’s reasonable to assume that a significant portion of Prodigy’s fan base also enjoys following professional disc golf competitions, and simply tuning in to watch the World Championships may have ignited a desire among customers to acquire their favorite discs. Moreover, the stellar performances of other Prodigy-sponsored pros, Alden Harris and Gannon Buhr, both securing top-10 finishes, undoubtedly added to the overall excitement surrounding Prodigy throughout the week. These Prodigy Pros signature disc sales will likely rise as well.

As of the most recent week of available data, covering September 20th through September 26th, Prodigy Discs continued to maintain a strong presence in the market. The average sales percentage for Prodigy Discs during this period was approximately 3.87%. While it represents a slight dip from the peak immediately following the World Championships, it still indicates sustained interest in their products.

To commemorate the win, Prodigy also released commemorative edition Isaac Robinson discs which are just now being uploaded to our website. These special edition discs should also help to increase Prodigy Sales in the short term.

It’s clear that having a player win the World Championship is impactful for a disc golf brand. The question now is whether this boost in Prodigy Discs sales is a temporary bump or if Isaac Robinson’s World Championship victory will have a long-term impact?

It will be interesting to monitor Prodigy Discs sales in the coming months to gauge whether Robinson’s victory has ignited a lasting passion for their discs among disc golf enthusiasts.

Rapid Surge of Disc Golf Manufacturing

Disc Molds Approved this Year

There was a time a few years ago where I knew and tested every new disc from every brand.

Now I just don’t even try anymore.

There are so many new molds and brands popping up that I’d pretty much have to test a new disc every day, and remember how it flew, just to keep up with all the new discs approved by the PDGA.

I ran some data from the PDGA approved discs to see exactly how rapid the pace of disc golf manufacturing has increased. As you can see from the curve, it’s pretty much an exponential increase over the last two years.

There will be more new discs approved by the PDGA during 2023 than any other year. More unique molds have been created through the first eight months of this year than were during the 20 year period from 1983-2003!

Line Graph showing the number of disc golf discs approved by the PDGA each year

It’s not just that the major brands are pumping out more new molds each year. The biggest contributor to the increased PDGA approval is the huge influx of new disc golf brands.

This graph shows the number of different brands with discs approved by year. 2023 has already had more discs approved by different brands than any other year with 70 different companies approving at least one disc mold.

Number of PDGA Discs by Brand

Next we are going to take a look at the number of disc molds by each individual brand. Because there are so many disc golf brands that have been or are currently in existence, I had to divide these charts into four different categories just so we can read them.

Big Brands

We classified big brands as those with at least 30 different disc molds approved by the PDGA. Innova by far has the most different disc golf molds with Discraft and Prodigy coming in second and third.  Despite it’s relative newness in the disc golf manufacturing world, Lone Star Discs made this top 15 list of “big brands”.

Medium Brands

The medium brands on this chart have between 10 and 30 different disc molds approved by the PDGA. Axiom Discs nearly broke into the big brand barrier with 28 discs, and to my surprise, the Canadian manufacturer Daredevil disc is also right there at 29.

Small Brands

Small brands are those with between 5 and 9 disc molds approved by the PDGA

Growing Brands

Much of the PDGA approval list is because of the rapid growth of many of the new disc golf brands. These are the companies that are aggressively investing in new molds.

The below graph shows the number of discs PDGA approved in the last year. Remix Disc Golf dominates this list with 17 different disc molds approved. Clash Discs, Doomsday Discs, Orbital, and Yikun Discs are close behind.

Disc Molds Approved this Year

When I pull the date for the last two years, Lone Star Disc is the fastest growing brand with 28 new molds in this time period.

Who are these new disc golf brands?

I used to do regular posts that were updated with all of the new disc molds each year. Now I’ll simply go over these rapidly growing disc golf brands. If you haven’t heard of them, you’re probably not alone.

Lone Star Disc LogoLone Star Disc

Lone Star Disc is a remarkable disc golf company with a unique origin story. Founded by a Texas-based plastic company that primarily manufactured parts for oil rigs, the company underwent a transformative journey during the pandemic. As the oil industry slowed down, their son proposed the idea of exploring the disc golf market, and it turned out to be a brilliant move.

Leveraging their expertise and resources, Lone Star Disc started producing their own molds and plastics in-house, capitalizing on their Texas roots, and quickly gained traction in the disc golf community. Their ability to quickly produce molds and manufacture locally allowed them to respond swiftly to customer demands and rapidly expand their product line when other manufacturers weren’t able to keep up.

Lone Star Disc has invested heavily in marketing strategies by establishing both Professional and Amateur teams, further solidifying their presence as a major player in disc golf.  They have a full line of discs with some very unique molds like the oversized Super Dillo. With their unwavering dedication to quality and innovation, Lone Star Disc, and the “quality of their plastic” is undoubtedly making a significant impact in the disc golf world.

Clash Discs Logo

Clash Discs

Clash Discs is another brand that formed as result of the pandemic boom. Renowned for their commitment to quality, Clash Discs takes pride in producing discs with ultra-high-quality plastic and they have chosen Finland as their manufacturing hub. This strategic decision ensures that their discs are crafted with precision and durability, providing disc golfers with exceptional performance on the course. However, Clash Discs is not just about manufacturing exceptional discs; they also invest heavily in marketing strategies that set them apart from the competition. With disc names like Honey, Popcorn Peach, and Fudge, they embrace a fun and creative approach that appeals to disc golfers of all levels. Additionally, Clash Discs has built a formidable professional sponsored team, comprising top-tier athletes, which is a testament to their dedication and support for the sport. Despite being a relatively small company, Clash Discs continues to make waves with its innovative designs, passionate marketing approach, and strong commitment to professional partnerships.

Doomsday Discs Logo

Doomsday Discs

Doomsday Discs undoubtedly is one of the most unique and distinct brands in the disc golf. The brand prides itself on pushing boundaries and embracing an unconventional approach to disc design. With an emphasis on creating discs that challenge tradition and offer players a truly unique experience, Doomsday Discs has captured the attention of a significant fanbase of disc golf enthusiasts. Several of the Doomsday Disc molds like the WMD are deliberately not able to be approved by the PDGA. From their captivating disc artwork to their innovative and unconventional molds, Doomsday Discs are definitely unique.

The brand’s commitment to uniqueness extends beyond aesthetics, as they continuously seek to allow team members to develop discs that offer a creative look feel and flight characteristics. In a sport filled with traditional standards, Doomsday Discs dares to be different, making it a must-have for players looking to add a distinct touch to their disc golf collection.

Remix Disc Golf

Remix is another unconventional disc golf company, and is a disc golf brand that we are not able to sell on Infinite Discs. The origins of this brand were unknown until Bodanza Disc golf discovered that the brand is owned by MVP disc sports for their Amazon.com sales. While several of their discs have been around for a while, they just decided to get them PDGA approved this year.

Yikun Discs Logo

Yikun Discs

Yikun Glaze Line DiscsYikun is an established disc golf manufacturer that has significantly expanded its range of disc molds in recent years. The Chinese brand’s collaboration with Discmania and increase in production quality has undoubtedly bolstered its reputation within the disc golf community.

Furthermore, Yikun is set to launch a new line called Glaze next month, featuring a selection of innovative disc molds. Based on insider information, these forthcoming discs are visually captivating and some of the most aesthetically pleasing plastic discs ever made.

Are there too many disc golf discs on the market?

Undoubtedly, the disc golf pandemic boom created the surge of new disc golf businesses all trying to tap in on the growing market.

In my opinion, the growth of new disc molds is growing much faster than disc golf. Disc golf retailers will not be able to keep up. While Infinite Discs still attempts to stock all disc molds from every brand, independent brick and mortar pro shop only have room for so much product. Disc golf retailers need to pick and choose and will only select from the best and most popular discs from the most popular brands.

If companies can create demand for their discs they will find success with the new molds they are producing. If they cannot, then we will see a correction in the disc golf production market as new brands fail because the cost of developing and manufacturing discs exceeds revenue brought in from sales. I expect that we will see a large number of “out of production” and “expired molds” over the next few years.
