An I-Blend Wraith?!

an image showing the Innova logo and the Infinite Discs logo, with an I-blend Wraith

What do you get when you cross a popular high-speed driver with a popular, inexpensive plastic type? You get an I-Blend Wraith. Yep, Innova and Infinite teamed up to produce this unique combination. Now you can get one of the most popular molds on earth, in durable, grippy I-Blend plastic, at a cheaper price than most plastics.

Infinite -Innova logos

What Is I-Blend Plastic?

I-Blend, or ‘Infinite-Blend’, is a blend of recycled S-Blend plastic. From the Infinite web site: “Infinite I-Blend is an affordable plastic blend with a great feel and incredible glide. This plastic has a slightly softer, grippier feel than S-Blend and is almost just as durable. If you’re looking for a premium feel at an affordable price, you’ll want Infinite Blend in your bag.”

A chart showing the properties of I-Blend plastic

Tell Me About The Wraith

The Wraith is celebrating its 20th birthday this year. It received its PDGA approval in 2005. It is pretty common to hear the Wraith described as a slightly slower Destroyer. Depending on your skill level, you might want to throw a Wraith as your distance driver.

Several Innova pros throw a Wraith, including Garrett Girthie, Philo Brathwaite, and Nate Sexton. The Wraith can also be thrown by amateurs and less skilled players.

An I-Blend Innova Wraith

The Innova Wraith in I-Blend plastic is a great combination of a popular disc and a premium plastic, at an inexpensive price. It will be available on September 16. Get yours while they last! If you like I-blend as much as I do, you’ll want to shop early to get the colors you want.

Check out the I-blend Wraith on 9/16, HERE

And stay tuned for other Innova molds in I-Blend plastic!

Introducing the Infinite Discs Artifact

Infinite Discs just rolled out a new putter, and this is one you’re going to want to check out! The Artifact is the latest mold from Infinite, and it is available in durable C-Blend plastic. It is a stable-to-understable beadless putter that flies straight and settles nicely without a skip. Its flight numbers are 2, 3, -1, 0.

A blue C-Blend Infinite Discs Artifact disc golf disc

I think it has a little more glide than the flight numbers indicate, but the rest seem to be spot-on. When throwing from the tee, or an approach shot, the Artifact typically flies straight. Throwing with a little more power, it has a hint of turn during the flight. That turn is easily controlled with a little hyzer angle.

If you’re using the Artifact for putting, it feels good in the hand and has a clean release. I prefer a different plastic for my putter, but it still feels great. Someone could comfortably use the artifact for a putting putter, as well as an approach disc.

Check out Infinite Discs and discover how the Artifact can improve your game!

MVP New Releases

MVP logo with with the words NEW RELEASES

Brad and Chad Richardson worked for their father at Maple Valley Plastics. While working there, the two brothers had an epiphany. While examining a door handle that was made with a rigid plastic covered with soft rubber, they thought that they could bring the same concept to disc golf. They developed and patented a method of combining an inner core made of one material, with an outer core made from another material. In 2010 MVP Discs was born.

Getting Started

For the first several years they worked in their parent’s barn, before moving to a larger building in 2015. Since then, they have expanded their building, became a household name, and signed some of the most well-known disc golfers on the planet to their team. And they have accomplished all of that in a relatively short time.

Long before James Conrad threw his Signature Envy into the basket to force a playoff in the 2021 World Championship, MVP discs were being thrown at courses around the world. Conrad’s Holy Shot simply cemented MVP’s place in history and introduced their molds to a world audience.

Amazing Growth

Since their early days experimenting with a novel idea, MVP has expanded their brand to include Axiom Discs and Streamline Discs, and a complete catalogue of both overmold and single-mold discs. The brothers are a perfect example of working hard to bring a good idea to fruition.

Infinite will be releasing four MVP/Axiom molds later today. These molds include new plastics and some creative stamps. Let’s check them out!

Fission Trail

The MVP Trail disc golf disc

10, 5, -1, 1

You might have got a sneak peek at this disc at the PDGA Champions Cup. Now you can pick up one of your own. The triple-foil stamp illustrated by John Dorn represents the many switchbacks one must endure to rise to the top.

Fission plastic utilizes a unique microbubble technology that creates a softer and lighter flight plate, accenting the gyro effect of the disc. It is a great disc that will gives a little turn, and a mellow fade. Perfect for a variety of skill levels.

Plasma Dimension

The MVP Plasma Dimension disc golf disc

14.5, 5, 0, 3

This release is the next Eagle McMahon Team Series disc, the Plasma Dimension. The stamp is the debut for his Synergy Series. The series centers around the concept of duality and harmony.  The stamp is illustrated by Green C Studio.

The Dimension is a high-speed, overstable driver that can crush drives in a skilled hand. For intermediate and advanced players, you’ll have the best extreme headwind disc in your bag.

Prism Neutron Trance

Axiom Cosmic Neutron Trance disc golf disc

8, 5, -2, 1

The Prism Neutron Trance has made appearances at the last couple OTB Open tournaments. This popular and much requested disc is now available with a stock stamp. It has a Proton rim and a Neutron flight plate.

The Trance has a flight that will help newer players find a lot of distance. It is stable to understable, with a good amount of glide. More experience players can shape the Trace to long, flexing flights, and be able to get late-flight turn.

Check out the Axiom Prism Neutron Trance HERE

Eclipse Insanity

Axiom Eclipse Insanity disc golf disc

9, 5, -2, 1.5

Another disc that has previously seen the light of day, and the dark of night, is the Eclipse Insanity. It was a special edition release, fitting for Halloween 2021.

The Insanity is a great understable disc that can be used as a turnover disc or a flip-up disc. Not only is it a great disc for your daytime round, you can keep the fun flying high once the sun goes down. MVP has some of the best glow plastic in the business!

How PDGA Ratings Work

Mcbeth's PDGA rating

If you’re new to the world of disc golf, you might have heard seasoned players toss around terms like “PDGA rating” with the same importance as if they were discussing the stock market or the performance of their favorite sports team. You might have hear players bragging about their improvements, or lamenting a drop in their rating. But what exactly is a PDGA rating, and why does it matter? Let’s dive in—and not even mention math and calculations … well, sort of.

What Is a PDGA Rating?

The PDGA rating is a number that represents your general skill level as a disc golfer. It’s like a report card, but instead of judging you on algebra and biology, it reflects your performance on the course. Specifically, it represents your efforts during PDGA sanctioned tournaments. This rating allows players of all skill levels to be compared fairly, whether you’re a weekend warrior or a touring pro. No matter what skill level and rating you are, you can still compare yourself to any other player with a rating.

How Is Your PDGA Rating Calculated?

The process isn’t magic, but it does involve some math. image of a head with gears, making calculationsAlthough the exact algorithm isn’t made public, we know approximately how they are determined. Ratings are based on the scores you’ve earned in PDGA-sanctioned events. Here’s how it works:

  1. Establishing a Baseline: In every event, some players’ performances are used as a benchmark. These players, called propagators, already have established PDGA ratings. There needs to be several propagators playing in order to calculate round ratings.
  2. Round Ratings: The PDGA determines the difficulty of the course that day by analyzing how propagators scored. Then, they calculate how many points your score is worth relative to the course’s difficulty. The course difficulty can be affected by things like wind and rain, so the difficulty level can change.
  3. Averaging It Out: Your overall rating is the average of your round ratings from the past year—with some exceptions. For instance, if you have a particularly bad round (for example: you have a nightmare hole where you hit every tree, find every OB, and three-putt to finish), it might get excluded if it’s unusually low compared to your other scores. The algorithm recognizes that outlier scores aren’t a reflection of your actual skill level.

Why Does Your Rating Matter?

Along with bragging rights and a clear representation of our skill improvement, our PDGA rating determines your division eligibility in tournaments. Want to play in Advanced or move up to Open? Your rating will guide where you will be playing against similarly-skilled players. upward trending graphThere are limits set by the PDGA that restricts people a high enough rating from playing in certain divisions. As mentioned, it’s also a handy way to track your progress over time. And let’s be honest, there’s something satisfying about seeing that number trend upward.

What If Your Rating Is Low?

First of all, no worries. Everyone starts somewhere. Some of the best players in the world once had ratings that might make them blush today. If your rating feels more “bumbling beginner” than “proud pro,” think of it as room for growth. Besides, a low rating just means you’re leaving plenty of room to surprise your competition!

As one wise disc golfer once said, “The only rating that matters is how much fun you’re having.” (Okay, maybe nobody said that, but they should have.) Keep that in mind if you find yourself worrying too much about your rating. Most of us are in this sport for the fun of it. So, have fun when you play! You might just find that the more relaxed you are, the more your rating will climb.
