The Discmania MD5 MidRange Disc

To wrap up the 2018 year, Discmania released the MD5 mid-range. While it has become common for mid-range discs to have a wider diameter than longer drivers, the trend in 2018 was to release smaller diameter mid-range discs, particularly more overstable discs. The MD5 is one of those smaller diameter, overstable mid-range discs, and it is a very precise one.

Released with a “First Run” stamp as well as with a stock stamp, the MD5 joined the ranks of similar discs released during the 2018 year– perhaps most closely related to the Innova Caiman. It has a profile quite similar to a Caiman, but in flight it does not get quite as much distance.  Rather than a smooth, drawn-out fade, the MD5 has the tendency to drop its edge and fade steeply out of the sky once velocity is lost. That provides a dramatic and precise overstable fade for great accuracy when thrown by experienced players.

It is not a disc that would be friendly to beginners, but is designed for experienced players who are looking for an easily controlled, short-range, overstable mid. Where discs like the Dynamic Discs Justice used to stand out in this category, Discmania has added to their lineup with this strong contender in the MD5.

Other End-of-Year Plastic Releases by Discmania

Also to end the 2018 year, Discmania released a couple of runs of their most popular discs in fun, premium plastics. While this is not the first time these discs have been run in these plastics, they are getting a lot of love from Discmania fans. The available of these discs in these plastics is sporadic, so it is good to grab them while they are available. It is hard to know when the next run will come.

Storm has recently introduced their first three discs which include a distance driver, a Mid-Range, and a Putter. Let’s take a quick look at those three discs…

JET STREAM

The first distance driver by Storm Disc Golf is the Jet Stream which features a relatively wide 2.3 cm rim width which places it around a “speed 12” flight rating. When thrown with power, it has a little turn to the understable side, but then finishes with a steady fade. When thrown with less power, it will be a consistently overstable driver. The flight numbers are comparable to the very popular Destroyer by Innova, so it has the potential to be a very popular driver for experienced players.

  • Fade: 3.0

EYE

The Eye refers to the “Eye of the Storm” and is a basic, dependable mid-range disc for all short range drives and approaches on the fairway. It is a wide diameter mid-range, and should feel comfortable for players of all experience levels. It has a slight dome and a low profile rim height, so it slides easily out of the hand. It is design for very straight, precision flight.

  • Fade: 1.0

CRATER

The Crater is a very unique putter to introduce to the market. When it comes to putters, there are a lot of them on the market, and it helps to stand out. The Crater features a thumb track on the top of the disc, which already puts in into a unique category, but the top isn’t just flat– it is a bit of a puddle-top which makes it even more unique. That means that the center of the disc is lower than the rim. It has an overstable finish, so it is more of a “into the wind” putter and short-range approach disc. Or, if you like power putting at the chains, this may be the disc for you.

Discraft and Full Foil Supercolor Art

Discraft experimented with Full Foil discs a couple of years ago, covering the entire top of some discs with the foil that is generally used in stamping stock or custom stamps. This year, in 2018, Discraft unleashed their Full Foil Supercolor stamps in earnest, really giving the look a push during the Ledgestone Open tournament. They successfully put a full color image onto the foil itself, and then press the entire foil sheet with the image over the top of the disc. It’s a cool new look for disc art, though still a bit on the pricey side.

The Buzzz was the obvious first target for Full Foil releases, and there have been several fun designs released with the shiny look. Plus, there are three different base foils that have been used: Plain Prism, Star, and Sparkle. So, you can go for a smoother foil look with plain, or go for sparkly foil or little star patterns in your foil– none of which has a negative effect on the color image that is part of the foil itself.

There have been a fun variety of Full Foil Supercolor Buzzz images released now, including a series of zombie discs, a series of retro bees, and the new Halloween stamp for 2018. Here are some examples:

Discraft also unleashed a couple of limited edition Full Foil Supercolor discs on models besides the Buzzz, like the popular overstable fairway driver, the VULTURE, and the popular putter, the ROACH.

Infinite Discs released the first Full Foil Supercolor edition of the awesome mid-range, the COMET as the featured monthly VIP CLUB disc in September 2018. It featured a great T-Rex image on all three foil types (plain, sparkle, and star). There were only 600 made for the VIP Club members.

It will be fun to watch as new Full Foil Supercolor discs are added to the Discraft lineup, and to see what else Discraft comes up with, in terms of artwork approaches. They’ve always been an innovator with their plastics and their use of foils and full color artwork.

We’re happy to introduce a new, weekly blog post called TOP TWENTY TUESDAY which is intended to let you know about the short-term sales trends for discs. We’ve regularly published different best-seller lists for the quarter, or for the year, etc. But sometimes it is fun to look at what the hot sellers are for a short period of time. In this case, we’ll show the sales figures from the previous Tuesday through the most recent Monday. Basically, you’ll be seeing the best-sellers for exactly the last week of sales at Infinite Discs. New discs will likely spike in the chart, and it will be fun to see which discs keep up the pace, and which long-term sellers appear week after week. These will also be broken down by plastic types, so the same model can show up in multiple plastics.

New Disc Golf Disc: DGA Tempest

DGA has announced a brand new disc, the Tempest!

The Tempest is a new understable distance driver, with the flight numbers of 13, 5, -3, 2. This is DGA’s third new mold of 2018, and we’re super excited for it’s release. This disc looks like it should achieve maximum distance for slower arms and huge turnover shots for big arms. While we haven’t thrown this disc yet, its numbers suggest big glide, lots of turn, but still a decent amount of fade.

The First Flight edition will feature artwork by John Dorn with only 750 available. There will be regular First Flight stamps in the mix as well, before they switch to the regular stock stamp.

 

The Tempest is set to be released on Friday, September 14th.

Best-Selling Disc Golf Shoes at Infinite Discs

Infinite Discs is still new to the shoe market, seeking out high quality shoes that disc golfers can count on to last through the rigors of the game in all conditions and on all fairways. Though we have not had much in the way of shoes to offer so far, we thought it would be worth sharing the ranking so far on the sale of those shoes we’ve had.

First of all, the Latitude 64 T-Link shoes still hold the top spot as best-selling shoes all-time through our website, but those shoes are no long available and customers have not been able to order them from us during most of the 2018 season. Infinite Discs Introduces Charity Fundraiser Disc Stamp

Infinite Discs has released a special stamp that will be used across several different brands and disc models in order to raise money for specific charities. The idea came up when Will, the mailman who has been picking up packages from Infinite Discs for several years, mentioned that he wanted to put together a disc golf event to raise money for his niece with Leukemia. Of course, many disc golfers have put together similar fundraisers for specific as well as for general causes which are wonderful and that do a lot of good to help those in need. So, while Will wasn’t the first to use disc golf as a fundraiser, we wanted to do a little something extra to contribute.

Infinite Discs worked together with a top-notch artist to get a beautiful stamp design featuring a hummingbird hoovering by a flower. Not only will the discs with the stamp be used at the event itself, but they are being offered online to anybody who likes the stamp. That way, Infinite Discs can pitch in an extra $1 per disc sold to the fundraiser, paying directly to the family of the Leukemia patient.

The intention is to continue using the stamp from time to time, but with different worthy causes that can directly benefit individuals in need. While sales will directly contribute to the treatment of Will’s niece for a few months, it is planned to bring back the stamp for future charity fundraisers as well. Every little contribution helps when it comes to alleviating the emotional and financial stress that hits families in crisis.
