You can have the best drive you’ve ever thrown, but if you aren’t close enough to putt into the basket, you are going to have to make an approach shot. Make a good approach and you can drop your putter in the baskets. Mess up and you might end up working hard to get in the basket.

Approach shots are important, and which disc you chose to approach can give you the confidence you need to make a good shot. In this blog we will talk about approach discs and explore which ones are rated the highest, and which ones sell the most. That will let you know which discs other people have found success with, and can help shape your decisions.

Wait, what IS an approach disc?

OK, you really could use any disc to try to land near the basket to give yourself a putt. If you have to cover a lot of ground before you get to the basket, you might need to use a higher-speed disc. For shorter, technical shots you’ll likely use a midrange or putter. (Of course, there are exceptions, even for shorter shots.) For this blog, we are going to be talking about putters, since they are categorized as putt/approach discs. That should give us the most accurate results.

There were two players on my card at league this week that bag a Berg. It is the go-to for several members of our club. I see a lot of Bergs at tournaments and other events. It is a low glide, low speed putter that will handle high-power throws. It is a great mold for accurate approach shots.

Prodigy PA-3

The PA-3 is a beaded putter that flies super straight. Its straight flight and mellow fade make a great combination for tactical approaches. It comes in a variety of plastics, so you can get the exact feel that you need to give you the confidence to attack the basket.

Axiom Proxy

A favorite of Simon Lizotte, the Proxy is another straight disc that can handle some torque. It has the same core as the Envy. The Proxy can serve you well as a putting putter, drives off the tee, or accurate approach shots.

The Best Disc Golf Approach Discs

The disc golf putter is the true workhorse of the sport. It’s the disc you trust for drives off the tee, precision approaches, and that final putt into the basket. While you can throw any disc for any shot, you probably aren’t reaching for a high-speed driver when you’re inside 100 feet. Or putting with a fairway driver (unless it is a tap in or a short putt). The disc golf putter, on the other hand, is a versatile tool that shines in a variety of shot types.

What is an approach disc?

Obviously, any disc golf disc can be used to approach a basket. Since the goal of approaching the basket is to land as close as possible to make your putt as easy as possible, you don’t want to worry about big skips. Using lower speed discs that will sit down easier helps you achieve that goal. That makes putters a great choice for an approach disc. Midrange discs can also be used effectively.

Since most putters are labeled as “putt & approach” discs, it would help to know the difference between a “putting putter” and an “approach disc”. Unfortunately, there isn’t a rule that defines the difference between the two types of discs. Generally speaking, putters used for drives or approach shots are overstable, premium plastics, with more glide than putters used for putts. However, you can always find disc golfers who putt with molds that have the qualities of an ‘approach putter’.

Fortunately, most of the discs on our list would be considered approach putters by a majority of disc golfers, so are effectively looking at the top approach putters. In this blog, we’ll look at three things:

The Gator is an overstable, bead-edged beast that thrives in windy conditions and tight lines. It’s technically a midrange, but many players treat it like an approach disc due to its overstability and reliable fade. Plus, it’s a great disc for both backhand and forehand shots.

Elevation Koi v. Divergent Discs Alpas

Elevation Disc Golf is a company that started about 1 year ago. They have specialized in making rubber discs that are extremely floppy. These discs sell out rapidly, and are quite useful. People enjoy these discs as they offer no ground play. The Koi, or the Intercepter are the only discs that are available at this moment.

Divergent Discs is another company that has emerge within this last year or so. They’re focusing on creating discs for the rest of us. They keep things really simple, providing a mold in one plastic type. They too have released a floppy disc, the Alpas.

These discs make for great approach discs because of their floppiness. Their flimsy form allows the disc to absorb energy and to remain where they land. This is beneficial as it lessens the chance of rollaways or bad kicks.

Elevation Koi Review

The way this disc feels very similar to the run 1 of the Interceptors, but a little more stiffer – just slightly though. Meaning it is still quite floppy and smashable. Where this is a rubber disc, gripping it feels a little odd from other typical plastic discs. The disc bends to how your hand is gripping it. It takes some time to get used to how the disc feels in your hands. This disc works best for a backhand power grip, it is difficult for me to throw forehand. It folds out of my hand too often when I try forehand throws.

The flight path of this is straight with a gentle fade at the end. It is a real easy throw, you can easily put too much power and turnover the disc. For me, it is difficult to feel confident in the angle release. The disc just hangs loose. This is good though, because when this disc lands, it stops. I’ve seen it land on a tree trunk and stay on the trunk.

Overall, this is an interesting disc, it isn’t my favorite, but the no ground play does have a certain allure to it. Definitely worth it if you’re looking for a disc that has no ground play.

Divergent Discs Review

The Alpas is an interesting disc, just like the Koi. It isn’t as soft as the Koi is, but it is still pretty flimsy. The rim is quite shallow, which can be uncomfortable for some people. My hand does feel a little cramped power gripping this disc. Gripping this disc though is still comfortable enough, and confident inspiring enough that the shallowness isn’t too much of a problem.

The Alpas is an understable putter. I could easily turn this disc over without trying. This is more of a touch approach disc than a driving putter. The angle control on this disc is manageable. It has a little bit of sag in it whilst holding the disc. The floppiness does the trick in absorbing energy and not moving once it hits the ground. So this disc does the trick in offering little to no ground play.

Overall, this is a good approach disc that doesn’t move around on the ground after it lands.

Concluding Thoughts

It is kind of hard to say which of these is the better disc. They share some similar attributes but they are also different enough that they are hard to compare. The Alpas offers a little more rigidity, while the Koi is extremely soft. They are both supposed to stop rollaways, but I have seen both of them hit the ground and roll away.

Introduction – Dallin Blanchard & His Signature Tomb

Dallin Blanchard is one of our top tier sponsored players, he doesn’t have the opportunity to tour as much as he would like, so many people aren’t aware of who he is. He is a phenomenal player, ranked 12th in the world, per the latest PDGA ranking update. He lives in Idaho, has a wife and four kids, and works full time. How did you learn about disc golf?

My dad, brothers and I used to play “frisbee golf” while growing up. We would play with ultimate frisbees while on camping trips and in the backyard. We didn’t know there were actual baskets and that this was an actual sport so we would use trees and other obstacles as our targets. My oldest brother picked up disc golf while at PA school in Las Vegas. He told me about it and I was immediately hooked.

How long have you been playing disc golf?

I started playing disc golf in the spring of 2013 which makes it close to 8 years. I started playing casually while living in Washington DC and then got more serious when I moved back to Idaho in the summer of 2014. I played my first tournament in 2014 in the Intermediate division. In 2015, I decided I wanted to be a pro, so I played my first Open tournament and took 5th. Since then, I have only played in the Open division with the exception of the 2016 Memorial Championship where I played Advanced and tied for 5th place.

Within the disc golf world, who do you look up to?

Paul Mcbeth because he is the best and I want to be the best and beat the best. I still have a ways to go though… Garrett Gurthie because of his amazing skills with the disc and amazing attitude on and off the course. He is very easy to root for! I look up to several other players but these 2 guys stick out the most.

What’s your favorite Driver – why?

My favorite backhand long distance driver is the Star Destroyer. The Destroyers that are in my bag both give me max distance with a very consistent turn at the beginning of the flight and left fade at the end of the flight. My favorite forehand driver is the Infinite Discs Slab. I love that I can throw this disc as hard as I want and will always know that it will finish to the right for me. Both drivers are very consistent and have given me lots of birdies!

What’s the best aspect of disc golf? – ie) Long drives, hitting gaps, long putts, meeting people or something else?

While all the things you mentioned are really good things about disc golf, my favorite aspect is the competition. I grew up with 5 boys in my family and pretty much all we did growing up was play sports and compete against each other in the backyard. I love competing against myself and being able to push myself to be the best. I also enjoy competing against better players than myself because it gives me a drive to figure out how to get to their level.

What is your favorite course, and what made it so?

I have 2 favorite courses. My first favorite is Freeman Park in Idaho Falls, Idaho. The reason this is my favorite is because this is the course that I “grew up” on. It is a beautiful well maintained park with big mature trees and grass fairways. There is a small creek that runs through about 5 holes of the course. This course has everything needed to make an elite disc golf player. My second favorite is Camp Sekani in Spokane Washington. This was one of the first wooded courses I played. I love the big tall pine trees and wooded fairways that require you to shape your shot to get into birdie position. I am a fan of all types of courses whether it is in the park or in the woods.

What brand is your favorite?

I currently throw discs from the Innova, Infinite, and Discmania line up. My favorite brand has always been Innova because that is where it all began for me.

Other than disc golf, what are some of your hobbies?

As mentioned above, I am a sports fanatic and played basketball, baseball and football growing up and through high school. I love riding bikes around our neighborhood with my wife and 4 kids. I enjoy everything about the outdoors and love camping and hiking with my wife and kids. I also do a little hunting and fishing each year as well. Also, another favorite hobby of mine is cooking food on my Green Mountain Grill smoker.

Will we see you tour more in the future?

Having a full time job, a wife, and 4 kids definitely makes it very difficult for me to be on the typical disc golf tour. My plans for 2021 are to play in 2 pro tour events, Worlds, qualify and play USDGC, and play several A tiers and B tiers in the Idaho, Utah, Montana, and Washington areas. As disc golf continues to grow and sponsorships continue to increase, I definitely hope there are opportunities for me to tour more in the coming years.
