What impact does a World Championship have for a disc golf brand?

Prodigy Pros Celebrate Isaac Robinsons Win

With Isaac Robinson recently winning the PDGA Disc Golf World Championships, I was curious to see if we would see an impact on Prodigy Disc sales. I ran the numbers to see if there was any kind of noticeable difference for Prodigy sales during, and immediately following the PDGA World Championships.

Prodigy sales by week during Worlds

Analyzing sales data from August and September reveals a noteworthy trend. During and immediately following Robinson’s World Championship win, there is a noticeable increase in the sales percentage of Prodigy Discs. This percentage more than doubled in comparison to the days preceding the World championships. For the week of August 17th – August 24th Prodigy sales accounted for just 2.04% of all InfiniteDiscs.com disc sales.

On September 3rd, Prodigy Discs accounted for 4.87% of total InfiniteDiscs.com disc sales, marking a substantial uptick from the earlier weeks. This surge continued into the week following the World Championships, with Prodigy Discs maintaining an average sales percentage of approximately 5.89% from September 8th to September 14th.

Percentage of Prodigy Sales by Day

However, it’s essential to put this increase in context. The Prodigy Disc sales surge cannot be solely contributed to the World Championship win. There was a surge in Prodigy sales during the World Championships, before the outcome and winner was determined.

Prodigy has consistently emphasized its marketing efforts through professional players. It’s reasonable to assume that a significant portion of Prodigy’s fan base also enjoys following professional disc golf competitions, and simply tuning in to watch the World Championships may have ignited a desire among customers to acquire their favorite discs. Moreover, the stellar performances of other Prodigy-sponsored pros, Alden Harris and Gannon Buhr, both securing top-10 finishes, undoubtedly added to the overall excitement surrounding Prodigy throughout the week. These Prodigy Pros signature disc sales will likely rise as well.

As of the most recent week of available data, covering September 20th through September 26th, Prodigy Discs continued to maintain a strong presence in the market. The average sales percentage for Prodigy Discs during this period was approximately 3.87%. While it represents a slight dip from the peak immediately following the World Championships, it still indicates sustained interest in their products.

To commemorate the win, Prodigy also released commemorative edition Isaac Robinson discs which are just now being uploaded to our website. These special edition discs should also help to increase Prodigy Sales in the short term.

It’s clear that having a player win the World Championship is impactful for a disc golf brand. The question now is whether this boost in Prodigy Discs sales is a temporary bump or if Isaac Robinson’s World Championship victory will have a long-term impact?

It will be interesting to monitor Prodigy Discs sales in the coming months to gauge whether Robinson’s victory has ignited a lasting passion for their discs among disc golf enthusiasts.

Rapid Surge of Disc Golf Manufacturing

Disc Molds Approved this Year

There was a time a few years ago where I knew and tested every new disc from every brand.

Now I just don’t even try anymore.

There are so many new molds and brands popping up that I’d pretty much have to test a new disc every day, and remember how it flew, just to keep up with all the new discs approved by the PDGA.

I ran some data from the PDGA approved discs to see exactly how rapid the pace of disc golf manufacturing has increased. As you can see from the curve, it’s pretty much an exponential increase over the last two years.

There will be more new discs approved by the PDGA during 2023 than any other year. More unique molds have been created through the first eight months of this year than were during the 20 year period from 1983-2003!

Line Graph showing the number of disc golf discs approved by the PDGA each year

It’s not just that the major brands are pumping out more new molds each year. The biggest contributor to the increased PDGA approval is the huge influx of new disc golf brands.

This graph shows the number of different brands with discs approved by year. 2023 has already had more discs approved by different brands than any other year with 70 different companies approving at least one disc mold.

Number of PDGA Discs by Brand

Next we are going to take a look at the number of disc molds by each individual brand. Because there are so many disc golf brands that have been or are currently in existence, I had to divide these charts into four different categories just so we can read them.

Big Brands

We classified big brands as those with at least 30 different disc molds approved by the PDGA. Innova by far has the most different disc golf molds with Discraft and Prodigy coming in second and third.  Despite it’s relative newness in the disc golf manufacturing world, Lone Star Discs made this top 15 list of “big brands”.

Chart showing the total number od discs PDGA approved by brand with at least 30 discs approved.

Medium Brands

The medium brands on this chart have between 10 and 30 different disc molds approved by the PDGA. Axiom Discs nearly broke into the big brand barrier with 28 discs, and to my surprise, the Canadian manufacturer Daredevil disc is also right there at 29.

Small Brands

Small brands are those with between 5 and 9 disc molds approved by the PDGA

Growing Brands

Much of the PDGA approval list is because of the rapid growth of many of the new disc golf brands. These are the companies that are aggressively investing in new molds.

The below graph shows the number of discs PDGA approved in the last year. Remix Disc Golf dominates this list with 17 different disc molds approved. Clash Discs, Doomsday Discs, Orbital, and Yikun Discs are close behind.

Disc Molds Approved this Year

When I pull the date for the last two years, Lone Star Disc is the fastest growing brand with 28 new molds in this time period.

Who are these new disc golf brands?

I used to do regular posts that were updated with all of the new disc molds each year. Now I’ll simply go over these rapidly growing disc golf brands. If you haven’t heard of them, you’re probably not alone.

Lone Star Disc LogoLone Star Disc

Lone Star Disc is a remarkable disc golf company with a unique origin story. Founded by a Texas-based plastic company that primarily manufactured parts for oil rigs, the company underwent a transformative journey during the pandemic. As the oil industry slowed down, their son proposed the idea of exploring the disc golf market, and it turned out to be a brilliant move.

Leveraging their expertise and resources, Lone Star Disc started producing their own molds and plastics in-house, capitalizing on their Texas roots, and quickly gained traction in the disc golf community. Their ability to quickly produce molds and manufacture locally allowed them to respond swiftly to customer demands and rapidly expand their product line when other manufacturers weren’t able to keep up.

Lone Star Disc has invested heavily in marketing strategies by establishing both Professional and Amateur teams, further solidifying their presence as a major player in disc golf.  They have a full line of discs with some very unique molds like the oversized Super Dillo. With their unwavering dedication to quality and innovation, Lone Star Disc, and the “quality of their plastic” is undoubtedly making a significant impact in the disc golf world.

Clash Discs Logo

Clash Discs

Clash Discs is another brand that formed as result of the pandemic boom. Renowned for their commitment to quality, Clash Discs takes pride in producing discs with ultra-high-quality plastic and they have chosen Finland as their manufacturing hub. This strategic decision ensures that their discs are crafted with precision and durability, providing disc golfers with exceptional performance on the course. However, Clash Discs is not just about manufacturing exceptional discs; they also invest heavily in marketing strategies that set them apart from the competition. With disc names like Honey, Popcorn Peach, and Fudge, they embrace a fun and creative approach that appeals to disc golfers of all levels. Additionally, Clash Discs has built a formidable professional sponsored team, comprising top-tier athletes, which is a testament to their dedication and support for the sport. Despite being a relatively small company, Clash Discs continues to make waves with its innovative designs, passionate marketing approach, and strong commitment to professional partnerships.

Doomsday Discs Logo

Doomsday Discs

Doomsday Discs undoubtedly is one of the most unique and distinct brands in the disc golf. The brand prides itself on pushing boundaries and embracing an unconventional approach to disc design. With an emphasis on creating discs that challenge tradition and offer players a truly unique experience, Doomsday Discs has captured the attention of a significant fanbase of disc golf enthusiasts. Several of the Doomsday Disc molds like the WMD are deliberately not able to be approved by the PDGA. From their captivating disc artwork to their innovative and unconventional molds, Doomsday Discs are definitely unique.

The brand’s commitment to uniqueness extends beyond aesthetics, as they continuously seek to allow team members to develop discs that offer a creative look feel and flight characteristics. In a sport filled with traditional standards, Doomsday Discs dares to be different, making it a must-have for players looking to add a distinct touch to their disc golf collection.

Remix Disc Golf

Remix is another unconventional disc golf company, and is a disc golf brand that we are not able to sell on Infinite Discs. The origins of this brand were unknown until Bodanza Disc golf discovered that the brand is owned by MVP disc sports for their Amazon.com sales. While several of their discs have been around for a while, they just decided to get them PDGA approved this year.

Yikun Discs Logo

Yikun Discs

Yikun Glaze Line DiscsYikun is an established disc golf manufacturer that has significantly expanded its range of disc molds in recent years. The Chinese brand’s collaboration with Discmania and increase in production quality has undoubtedly bolstered its reputation within the disc golf community.

Furthermore, Yikun is set to launch a new line called Glaze next month, featuring a selection of innovative disc molds. Based on insider information, these forthcoming discs are visually captivating and some of the most aesthetically pleasing plastic discs ever made.

Are there too many disc golf discs on the market?

Undoubtedly, the disc golf pandemic boom created the surge of new disc golf businesses all trying to tap in on the growing market.

In my opinion, the growth of new disc molds is growing much faster than disc golf. Disc golf retailers will not be able to keep up. While Infinite Discs still attempts to stock all disc molds from every brand, independent brick and mortar pro shop only have room for so much product. Disc golf retailers need to pick and choose and will only select from the best and most popular discs from the most popular brands.

If companies can create demand for their discs they will find success with the new molds they are producing. If they cannot, then we will see a correction in the disc golf production market as new brands fail because the cost of developing and manufacturing discs exceeds revenue brought in from sales. I expect that we will see a large number of “out of production” and “expired molds” over the next few years.

The Top-Selling Brands at Infinite Discs in 2021

Infinite Discs has always strived to keep discs from all disc golf brands and manufacturers in stock on our retail website. As some brands are discontinued or the supply becomes slim, those brands can disappear from our sales figures for long periods. Other new brands jump into the market and begin to show their strength with time. It is always fun after each year to pull up the count of the discs sold through our retail site to measure the growth of all the brands that we carried.

Here is a look at how those brands all measured up against one another for the year 2021. Please keep in mind that these sales statistics ONLY represent retail sales through Infinite Discs. It does not account for sales through other retailers and may not represent the entire disc golf marketplace. Plus, many brands have their own retail outlets in addition to their wholesale operations, and those sales may account for a large portion of the total sales for those particular brands and would not be calculated here.

The Infinite Discs brand also has inflated numbers through our retail site simply because we are traditionally known as a kay retail source for our own brand. Throughout all of 2021, Infinite Discs brand was also distributed to other retailers, both online and brick-and-mortar, but no wholesale numbers are reflected in this disc count. Again, this is only retail sales through Infinite Discs.

Charting the Sales

Innova remained the top-selling brand, as it has since Infinite Discs began in 2012. Discraft continues to build momentum, taking a strong #2 position. With the ups and downs of the supply chain in 2021, it is hard to know how the numbers would have looked if the most popular discs had been readily available at all times of the year. However, many popular discs went through repeated cycles where they would arrive, immediately sell out, then be missing from inventory for weeks or months before the next restock. The Infinite Discs brand of discs made a sharp move toward the top, though sales are particularly strong for that brand since this is a chart of sales through Infinite Discs’ own website.

New Brands Making Moves

The number of small brands on the list continues to grow. We’re excited about that. Here are some brands that were recently created and made impressive moves on the chart:

Thought Space Athletics at #10 with their ultra-artistic, high-quality discs

Dino Discs at #11 with their line of discs for kids

Divergent Discs at #18 with their line focused on recreational players

Elevation Disc Golf at #19 with two silicone rubber discs launched in 2021

EV7 at #23 with their putters-only manufacturing approach

What Will 2022 Bring?

We’re excited to watch the disc sales in 2022 and see how things shuffle and move around. It should be particularly interesting to watch as we’ve seen a lot of professional players change brands for the new year. How will the sales for those brands be affected by the shuffle in sponsorships?

Feel free to leave your comments predicting the ups and downs of disc brands in 2022.

Disc Golf Stability – How Stable Are Your Discs?

Disc Golfers crossing a bridge

The Stability of Discs in our Bags

In our continuing series highlighting the results of our annual State of Disc Golf survey, this week we take a look at the stabilities of our discs. We will also discuss the term stability and how the language of disc golf can be unclear in regards to the stability of a disc. Then we will take a peek inside our bags to see the discs we throw and how stable they are.

Learning the Flight Ratings

One of the things we learn about discs when we are starting out playing disc golf is that the flight of the disc is important, and we need to learn about the how ours fly. Depending on how much coaching we got when we first started, a lot of us went for the ‘fast’ or ‘high speed’ discs because we wanted the 4 Number Flight Ratingsdiscs to fly out of our hands at a high rate of speed. Since we were selecting our molds randomly, we undoubtedly ended up with discs that would do nothing but hang a sharp left turn (for right-handed players who throw back-hand shots, or ‘RHBH’). Over time, we learned that discs have a general flight rating and found out that the common four-number flight rating or the single digit flight rating can be used to tell us how our discs will fly. Most of us came to embrace the rating system and would frequently use it to guide our purchases. No longer were we buying discs because of the flight description stamped on the disc. Instead, were now using those flight ratings to help us fill gaps in our bags. No, the flight numbers are not always exactly how the disc flies. But it’s the best we have.

Learning the Language

In addition to the variability of flight numbers versus the actual flight of the disc, the sport’s lexicon has a glaring issue that regularly calls for clarity. That is the issue of ‘stability’. If someone comes into Infinite Discs and tells us that they are looking for a new midrange that is a little more stable, we don’t exactly know what they are looking for until we find out what they are replacing. Is there old midrange worn and too flippy, and they are looking for something a little less understable? Or, are they throwing a Justice that they just can’t get any distance with, so they are looking for something less overstable?

Although typically, what people are referring to when they say more or less stable is ‘straighter’. We would still need to clarify exactly what they are looking for, rather than selling them an Anubis and sending them out to play.

Stability of Discs In Our Bags

For our survey, we wondered what the make-up of people’s bags were as far as the stability is concerned. We let participants decide what is overstable or understable. The same disc has different flights for different people. We broke the categories into disc types: distance drivers, fairway drivers, midranges and putters. We asked ‘What stabilities of discs are in your bag? [for the given disc type]’. Let’s look at the results.

Distance Drivers

The first type of disc we’ll look at is distance drivers. We asked how many of each of five stabilities do you carry, from Very Overstable to Very Understable. Since most people carry a variety of distance drivers, people were allowed to select all stabilities that applied to them. This chart shows the percentage of people who carry at least one of these stabilities. As an example, the survey shows that 69% of us carry a straight/stable distance driver, as show in the chart below. Here are all the distance driver results:

Graph showing percent of disc golfers that carry overstable, straight, and understable discs in their bag.

It is not too surprising to see that a majority of us don’t carry the extreme stabilities. Most of us can come close to mimicking the flight of a very overstable or very understable disc, with something close. Even so, that leaves a lot of us that just want that ultra-meat hook or ultra-flippy disc. I broke the numbers down to see what percentage chance we have of carrying discs with the given stability and here is what I found. Naturally, the chart will look similar to the previous one. This just gives us a snapshot of an average individual bag.

Stability of the discs in the average disc golfers bag graph.

One and Only Stability

In looking at the spreadsheet with the data, I was curious about how many of us carry drivers with only one stability. I was surprised at how big the number was. It was a lot more than I see with our club members. Here is the chart with the date:

Pie Chart showing that 28% of disc golfers have distance drivers all of the same stability

My first thought was that there were a lot of beginners who just didn’t carry a lot of discs. So I broke the 28% down into reported skill levels and found out that I was pretty accurate in my assessment. People who called themselves Beginners or even Intermediate made up 85% of the people who only have one stability for their distance drivers. Here is the chart:

Bar graph showing that beginners are more likely to have distance drivers of only one stability.

Control Drivers Stability

Now let’s look at the data for fairway drivers.  There were slightly fewer people who carry over and understable discs, and a decent amount more that carry straight/stable discs. The extreme stabilities are the outliers again, with similar numbers to the distance drivers.

And again let’s look at what makes up an average bag with fairway drivers. Again, similar to the chart above. And not a huge difference between fairway and distance drivers.

Midrange Stability

Let’s see if midranges tell a different story. The chart below indicates that there is a bit more difference when it comes to the stability of midranges. Straight/stable mids reign supreme, but with even larger numbers. And mostly at the expense of the extreme stabilities again. Far fewer people throw very understable mids.

Stability of midrange discs

Distilling those numbers down we look at the average bag for mids:

Average disc golf bag stability for midranges.

The Kon Tiki

With over 27% of us throwing understable to very understable discs, it will be interesting to see the reception for the new understable Infinite mold, the Kon Tiki. I assure you, the timing of this post was purely coincidental! As of this writing, the Kon Tiki is a brand new release

Stability of Disc Golf Putters

Moving on to the category I was most curious about, the stability of putters. As you can see from the chart below, the straight/stable category is closest to 100% of any disc type. Based on the guys I throw with, that seems spot on. So do the very overstable/overstable categories, which represents a combined 70% of us. The ‘very understable’ is the smallest of all the disc types.

Percentage of people that carry putters of different stabilities. Most carry straight putters.

Using the information to graph an average bag, here are the results.

Average putter stability

I thought the ‘very overstable’ category might be a tad higher, and I wouldn’t have been surprised if it were a lot higher, due to how many people drive with putters, and like them as stable as can be. Like so many categories we’ve looked at, I think people go with the overstable disc and just make it work. Also, putters had the highest number of people who only throw one stability, with 40% of us only bagging one. That includes me and my R-Pro Dart!

Pie chart of people that have only one stability putter.

There is a look at our bags and the stabilities we carry. There are sub-categories that we could explore, such as the make-up of a pro’s bag vs a beginner/rec player’s bag. But, we’ll have to address that in another blog. Until then, throw what you love!

Comment below and let us know about the stability of discs in your bag. Do you have Very Overstable or Very Understable discs?

Best Disc Golf Discs – Top 100 Selling Discs

This article was written several years ago. Click this link for an updated list of the best discs on the market.

Best Disc Golf Discs for 2021

Today we’re going to take a look at the Best Disc Golf Discs for 2021. To learn which discs are the most popular, we are going to take a look at the Top 100 Sellers from 2020. All data is taken from InfiniteDiscs.com sales figures. (We cannot show exact figures, but we can easily see which discs sell most compared to others.)

Last year, 2020, brought crazy growth to our sport of disc golf. With many disc manufacturers being temporarily shut down, plus the massive influx of disc golfers, popular discs became harder and harder to come by throughout the year. Some discs, like the Zeus, quickly became “out of stock”, thus dropping it’s rank on the Top 100. When we did get the Zeus in, it would sell very fast, causing it to go higher on the chart.

We believe the top 100 selling discs of 2020 will still be an excellent indicator of the most popular discs of 2021. These sales represent the data from old and new disc golfers, making them a great summary of the best disc golf discs.

First we’ll jump into the top 100 chart, then we’ll look at some broken down stats. Lastly, we’ll get to our recommendations for the Best Disc Golf Discs of 2021!

The Top 5 Selling Golf Discs for 2020

  1. Innova Destroyer
  2. Discraft Buzzz
  3. Discraft Luna
  4. Innova Wraith
  5. Discraft Zone

The Destroyer, Buzzz, and Luna took spots 1-3 respectively, making them the perfect Driver, Mid, and Putter combo… assuming you can handle a Destroyer. The Wraith and Zone were a close 4th and 5th place, showing that Innova and Discraft dominated the top five. The P2 dropped from it’s top 5 spot in 2019, and this was primarily due to it being unavailable for most of the year.

Ups and Downs

Next to each disc is an arrow pointing up, down, or right. These arrows and numbers represent how much each disc climbing or dropped in the ranks from 2019. Many of the top discs shuffled slightly, but not enough to make a big difference in the rankings. The #44 Aztec, #45 Raptor, and #45 Rhyno made the biggest jumps into the top 50. The biggest overall jump was the #87 Cohort, jumping 174 spots to make the Top 100 chart. The #91 Relay also made a big jump of 99 spots.

The Hades and the Fierce debuted in 2020 and claimed the highest spots on the chart for new discs, at #20 and #21 respectively.

Types of Discs Sold

What types of disc golf discs are most popular?

Top selling disc type graph in 2020

Putters were the top selling type of disc in 2020. We saw a big influx in putter sales. Putters made up 34% of all discs sold in 2020. Part of this may be do to the fact that many courses were closed for a time and disc golfers had more time to practice putting.

Control drivers came in second, at 28%. Distance drivers were at a close third at 26%, and mid ranges were by far the worst selling disc type at just 12%. Midrange discs are not the most glamourous golf discs. They do not wear out nor get lost as quickly as do drivers.

Top Disc Golf Brands

In terms of the best disc golf brands, here we list the number of times any brand had a disc golf mold that made our top 100 list.

Graph of Best Disc Golf Brands during 2020

Innova appeared on the Top 100 chart 33 times, while Discraft appeared 23 times. Infinite Discs molds came in third with 9 molds on the chart. Many other brands made the chart, showing that there are excellent discs from every manufacturer. Because most of the disc golf manufacturers were unable to produce discs at a rate fast enough to keep up with demand, there was often lack of availability of many of the most popular molds. These graphs would likely be very different if we were able to keep in stock all disc models throughout the year.
