How to Improve Your Disc Golf Game–Tips from World Champs

It is early November here in Northern Utah, and last week marked the first mornings when I needed to scrape the frost off of my car before driving to work. As much as I hate it, this will become a habit in the following months. Acknowledging this opens the door for me to recognize another reality that I hate–the disc golf offseason is upon us. Other than a few small local events, tournament season has all but ended.

The offseason is both literally and figuratively a cold, dark, and miserable time for the disc golfer. However, this break from competitive disc golf play provides an opportunity for reflection and improvement. For myself, I know that there are several elements of my game that I need to work on to bring my game up to the next level that I would like to compete at.

How Do We Improve our Disc Golf Game?

So how do we improve? I had the opportunity a few months ago to ask some of the best players in the game this very question. It was during the press conference at the 2016 Ledgestone Insurance Open presented by Discraft in Peoria, IL. The pro panel at this conference included 4 World Champions with 12 World Championships combined–Catrina Allen, Valerie Jenkins, Nate Doss, and Paul McBeth. I asked them to give some advice for amateur players who are hoping to improve their game.

Cat went first, and the first thing she mentioned was the importance of field work. This became a point of reference for everyone’s answers. Catrina went on to emphasize the importance of dedication. She encouraged players to throw and grow and throw some more. She also stressed the need to prioritize the field work over the casual rounds. “Stop playing casual rounds, and get to the field for practice,” were her final words of advice. If you want to really compete, spend your time working in the field rather than playing a casual round at the course. Put in the work, and the results will follow.

Val agreed with Cat, but also stressed the importance of the fun of the game. She started out by saying how she has been playing for her whole life, and it has been important for her to still have fun. “Remember to have fun. That’s when you enjoy the sport the most.” She recommended ta players remember why they started disc golf and just continue to play, and then they will excel.

Val’s husband Nate spoke next. He started off by jokingly saying that his biggest piece of advice was to be 15 years old and have really long arms. All jokes aside though, he did stress that in today’s game you have to start young to compete at the top level and develop an excellent forehand. He went on to say that it’s not easy to be a top level disc golfer. It’s a dream, but a lot of hard work, and there’s a lot of alone time, but if you put in the work it will pay off.

  • Top and bottom compartments are suitable to store towels, clothes, etc.
  • Top compartment can also be used to store an extra 3-4 discs.

With a design featuring the Captain America Shield, this is a disc that everyone can appreciate. Whether you are playing catch in the park, warming up for your round in a tournament, or even organizing a competitive Ultimate match, the Captain America Aviator is a disc that all throwers can appreciate. It also makes a perfect gift for the ultimate superhero fan or collector. The Dynamic Discs Captain America Aviator can be ordered now at Infinite Discs.

Top Selling Discs–Q3

fullsizerender-2

Well, here we are again folks! Another 3 months have passed at Infinite Discs and it’s time to take a look at the top selling discs of this quarter. These have been wild months for the disc golf world. We saw a new world champion crowned and a decent dose of controversy in the professional realm of disc golf. Looking at the numbers, it is pretty safe to say that the pros who have been playing at the top during these months had an influence on the way certain discs sold. We find a new addition in the top 3 discs overall that also became a brand new champion of an overhauled chart in the putter division. So let’s get started!

Top 10 Overall

  1. Innova Destroyer
  2. Innova TeeBird
  3. Innova Aviar
  4. Discraft Buzzz
  5. Westside Harp
  6. Gateway Wizard
  7. Dynamic Discs Judge
  8. Discmania DDX
  9. Innova Roc3
  10. Innova Roc/Innova Valkyrie

Nobody should be surprised to see the Innova Destroyer held its ground as the reigning number one selling disc overall. The Innova TeeBird jumped back up to number 2 after falling out of the top 3 last quarter, and then perhaps the most surprising mold of all, the Innova Aviar jumped up to the number 3 spot. The Aviar and the Westside Harp (which makes its first appearance in the overall top 10 at number 5) can both thank their professional endorsements for their spike in sales, as the highest overall plastics of each disc were McPro Aviars and BT Hard Harps. These molds in these plastic blends are thrown regularly in tournament play by Paul McBeth and Ricky Wysocki respectively. The Discmania DDX also cracked into the overall top 10 for the first time ever. Rounding out the list we see a rare tie between the Innova Roc and Innova Valkyrie for the 10 spot.

Top Distance Drivers

  1. Innova Destroyer
  2. Discmania DDX
  3. Innova Valkyrie
  4. Innova Firebird
  5. Innova Wraith
  6. Innova Tern
  7. Innova Boss
  8. Innova Beast
  9. Westside Destiny
  10. MVP Catalyst

The DDX shows that there is a new…deputy? in town (The Destroyer being the long standing Sheriff of course) by jumping all the way up from the 10 spot it claimed in its debut quarter. If this trend continues, maybe we will see a new name at the top of this list! Besides that, Innova once again showed its dominance of this category. The Innova Firebird made a good jump up to the 4 spot (12 overall), and the top selling plastic was the Nate Sexton signature series color glow. Here again we can feel the professional influence on the numbers. Also a new name to the chart at number 10 is the newly released MVP Catalyst.

Top Control/Fairway Drivers

  1. Innova Teebird
  2. Latitude 64 Saint
  3. Latitude 64 River
  4. Innova Leopard
  5. Innova Thunderbird
  6. Discmania FD Jackal
  7. Latitude 64 Diamond
  8. Dynamic Discs Escape
  9. Innova TL
  10. Innova Leopard3

Nothing too crazy happening in the Fairway category. Some slight shifts in the top 7, while the 8-10 spots are all filled by discs that didn’t make the chart last time. The Dynamic Discs Escape and Innova Leopard3 have all seen the top 10 before, but the Innova TL, which is actually the oldest of these bottom three molds, made it into the top 10 for the first time ever. Maybe because of the growing popularity of the TeeBird? (TL=TeeBird Long).

Top Midrange Discs

  1. Discraft Buzzz
  2. Innova Roc3
  3. Innova Roc
  4. Innova Mako3
  5. Discmania MD3
  6. Dynamic Discs EMac Truth
  7. Discraft Comet
  8. Discraft Buzzz GT
  9. Latitude 64 Compass
  10. Discraft Buzzz OS

The top 3 look identical (again), but the rest of the list did some shifting. The Innova Mako3 and Discmania MD3 bumped up a few slots, and though the Dynamic Discs EMac Truth dropped, it wasn’t much of a drop for coming off of a new release last quarter only dropping two spots at number 6. The Discraft Comet has seen the top 10 before, but it wasn’t there last quarter. Number 8 was a pleasant surprise for us The Discraft Buzzz GT is an old Discraft mold that has been out of production, but they brought it back for us to do a limited run as part of our sponsorship of the 2016 Ledgestone Insurance Open. These very unique and rare discs are only available at Infinite Discs, and once they’re gone, they’re gone. So if you’re interested, I would recommend snagging one while you still can!

Top Putt and Approach Discs

  1. Innova Aviar
  2. Westside Harp
  3. Gateway Wizard
  4. Dynamic Discs Judge
  5. Latitude 64 Pure
  6. Discmania P2 Psycho
  7. Latitude 64 Dagger
  8. Innova Nova
  9. Dynamic Discs Warden
  10. Discraft Zone

Now, the category where everyone at Infinite Discs would have lost some money if we were the betting type. While the Aviar and Harp surprised everyone with numbers 1 and 2 (thanks again Paul and Rick), we found another surprise in seeing the Wizard beat out the Judge for the first time since the Judge took the number one spot from the Wizard for the first time nine months ago. Another surprising jump was the Latitude 64 Dagger climbing into the 7 spot (hard to ignore the new World Champ’s influence here again). So a category that has been a two horse race for a while just got a little more interesting, and it will be a lot of fun to see what the final three months of 2016 will bring us.

Takeaways? As I mentioned, the numbers seem to say that the professional endorsements are working folks! I always skim over the Destroyer always holding the number one spot, but you really have to wonder where that disc would be if you took Paul McBeth out of the equation completely. And now we see spikes in the Harp and Dagger coming off of Ricky Wysocki’s first championship. Have other thoughts? See any surprises or trends I failed to recognize? Leave a comment letting us know what you think!

Team Infinite Announcement

NickLopezTeamInfinite

This summer we opened up applications for Team Infinite, and we couldn’t believe the response we got!

We have spent hours sorting through all of the many applications we received. Thank you everyone who applied!

Now, the time has finally come to announce the members of Team Infinite! So without further ado, here is our current team roster! Click on the names of the team members to see their profiles and learn a little bit more about them!

Current Team Infinite Roster

We are so excited to have these disc golfers representing our brand and this sport across the country. We look forward to getting to know these players more and to share with everyone what they’re doing to help grow the sport in their parts of the country.

img_9516

For example, here is a picture we received just this week from team member Markus Mika (left) at a PDGA Sanctioned league he is running out of La Crosse, WI. This is a travelling league, and this picture was taken at North Valley DGC in Inver Grove Heights, MN. Markus is a great example of a selfless disc golfer that goes above and beyond to grow the sport and we are proud to have him on the team.

I applied, but I wasn’t selected. Now what?

You’re still awesome! We had so many great applicants that made it very hard to make our selections. Also, we are not completely shutting down the selection process, and will continue to add additional highly qualified team members. Here are a few things that you can do to better your chances of being selected for the team in the future.

  1. Use InfiniteDiscs.com. This may be obvious, but we want to see people are actively using all facets of our site, and this doesn’t just mean buy discs from us. We have put in a lot of work to develop Infinite Courses and Infinite Profiles. Keep your profile up to date. You can enter your scores in the system, record course scores, keep track of your stats, write disc and course reviews, and much more on our site.
  2. Interact with us on social media. We don’t expect everyone to share every little thing we share on every social media format, but we do notice when you are actively engaged with us. Liking, commenting on, or sharing our posts helps us to share our message with the people within your sphere of influence.
  3.  Be active within your disc golf community. We want team members who are actively involved on a local level who want to grow the sport and disc golf experience in their part of the country. Play in as many disc golf events as you can. Even better, step up and run a league or tournament in your area.

And even if you aren’t interested in being a part of Infinite Discs, we hope you will still do the things we listed above. We hope everyone will actively enjoy the many ways that disc golfers can take advantage of the resources we are working to provide for disc golf.

A note for our Utah Golfers who were not accepted.

With Infinite Discs operating out of Utah, we had a lot of applications come in from our home state. We love Utah and Utah disc golfers, and there are so many folks who applied who if they had lived in a different state, we would have easily accepted them to the team. We really are so grateful for the homegrown support, and we hope you all know that just because you weren’t accepted to the team doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate you and your support!

Keep Your Grip with New Whale Sacs!

We are excited to announce a new and unique product that is now available at Infinite Discs: Whale Sacs!

Whale Sacs are a grip enhancing bag that is perfect for all disc golfers looking to keep a firm grip on their discs during their round. What sets Whale Sacs apart from similar products that we have seen is their creative hand made design that attaches easily to your disc golf bag. Whale Sacs are made using numerous colors and patterned cloth, and their whale shape is designed so that you can use the “tail” to tie it onto your bag, belt loop, or anything else! Whale Sacs are not made using Rosin, but instead they consist of a clay based stone/powder.

We stocked up on quite a few designs of the Whale Sacs that can all be found HERE. In the little bit of time we have had to try this product out, we have been fans. It is great for people who like the substance they feel from dirt and chalk bags, but don’t like the mess they leave.

If you don’t know about Tina and Eric and the #WhalePantsTour, they are awesome people doing awesome things to grow the sport, and we are very happy to be selling Tina’s incredible product! Whale Sacs are now available HERE.

Check back often for new designs! It will be “whale” worth your time!

Top Discs of 2016–Q2

Well, it’s that time of year again! Time to look back on the top selling discs of the past three months. April-June is a good quarter (as well as the third) to analyze and really see what people are actively throwing during disc golf season. There were a few surprises, but for the most part we see a lot of familiar names in new places, however we do see a pretty big mix up in the top three!

Top 10 Overall

  1. Innova Destroyer
  2. Dynamic Discs Judge
  3. Discraft Buzzz
  4. Innova TeeBird
  5. Gateway Wizard
  6. Latitude 64 Saint
  7. Innova Aviar
  8. Innova Roc3
  9. Innova Wraith
  10. Innova Valkyrie

Last quarter, we were pretty shocked to see the Discraft Buzzz, which had been a long time number 2 overall, drop to number 7. But this time, the Buzzz bumped back into the top three, dropping the Innova TeeBird to number 4. Meanwhile, the Dynamic Discs Judge climbed up to number 2, while the Innova Destroyer held its long time spot at the top slot. How long will it be before the Judge, Buzzz, or any other disc model dethrones the Destroyer?

Top Distance Drivers

  1. Innova Destroyer
  2. Innova Wraith
  3. Innova Valkyrie
  4. Innova Boss
  5. Innova Tern
  6. Innova Beast
  7. Legacy Outlaw
  8. Innova Firebird
  9. Westside Destiny
  10. Discmania DDX

Innova still controls the Distance Driver category with 7 of the top spots, but believe it or not, their hold actually isn’t as strong as it was last quarter with 8 molds. The Wraith and Valkyrie made pretty big jumps from 8 and 7 last quarter to round out this quarter’s top 3. Also at the bottom of the list we see two new releases–the Westside Destiny and the Discmania DDX. As always, new releases always seem to make a splash on these charts, so only time will tell if they maintain their hold at the top of the charts (which reminds me, last quarter’s number 2 the Innova Colossus dropped to 14 for this quarter for those who were wondering).

Top Control/Fairway Drivers

  1. Innova Teebird
  2. Latitude 64 Saint
  3. Innova Leopard
  4. Latitude 64 River
  5. Discmania FD Jackal
  6. Innova Thunderbird
  7. Discraft Undertaker
  8. Latitude 64 Diamond
  9. Latitude 64 Saint Pro
  10. Dynamic Discs Felon

The Control Driver category looks pretty similar to last quarter with a few notable shifts. The Innova TeeBird held its spot at number one while the Innova Leopard made a jump into the top 3. Trilogy brands seem to be moving into a good position in this category by holding half of the top 10 spots. Perhaps the biggest shifts from last quarter would be the Dynamic Discs Escape dropping out of the top 10 when it was 6 last quarter, and the Discmania FD Jackal jumping up to number 5 after being number 10 last quarter. Also we see the newly released Discraft Undertaker bumped into the top 10 at number 7.

Top Midrange Discs

  1. Discraft Buzzz
  2. Innova Roc3
  3. Innova Roc
  4. Dynamic Discs EMac Truth
  5. Innova Mako3
  6. Latitude 64 Compass
  7. Discmania MD3
  8. Discraft Buzzz OS
  9. Dynamic Discs Truth
  10. Discraft Buzzz SS

The Midrange category continues to be dominated by the Discraft Buzzz, and the top 3 look identical to last quarter. But the middle of this pack is where things get interesting. Number 4 goes to the newly released EMac Truth. Will it fall with time? Maybe not when you look at the Latitude 64 Compass. The Compass was a newly released midrange that reached number 4 last quarter, and it hung on to stay at the number 6 spot. So it will be interesting to watch and see if this disc can follow the path of its Trilogy brother in staying on the charts. Also at number 7 we see another new name–the Discmania MD3. This disc is not a new release, but got a lot of attention this quarter with new plastic releases (Glow Eagle Signature and Metal Flake). The Midrange category will be a very interesting one to watch for next quarter to see how all these play out together.

Top Putt and Approach Discs

  1. Dynamic Discs Judge
  2. Gateway Wizard
  3. Innova Aviar
  4. Latitude 64 Pure
  5. Westside Harp
  6. Discmania P2 Psycho
  7. Dynamic Discs Warden
  8. Innova Nova
  9. MVP Ion
  10. Innova KC Pro Aviar

The Dynamic Discs Judge continues its reign as the top putter for the third straight quarter, while the Innova Aviar jumped two spots to crack into the top 3. After running the report for this article, what may have surprised me the most was seeing the Westside Harp at the number 5 putter spot. The Harp has consistently been a popular putt and approach disc, but it wasn’t even on the chart last quarter. This goes back to what I said earlier–I believe this quarter really is a better indication of what players are actually throwing, while last quarter might be a better indicator of what disc golfers were collecting or thinking they would be throwing once the snow melted.

So a few takeaways? It looks like Innova just needs to keep doing what its been doing in the Distance Driver category. They did give up one spot though, and only time will tell if that is a sign of things to come. Also this quarter was a very impressive one from the Discmania camp. For the first time ever they had one disc in the top 10 of every category. They must be doing something right, as we have seen their sales grow consistently over the last few quarters. And lets not forget about the Trilogy. The Latitude 64 Compass held its ground in the top 10 after its initial release. For Dynamic Discs they have to be happy with the EMac Truth‘s spot and the Judge‘s continued dominance. Not to mention they’re hosting the PDGA Pro Worlds this year in Emporia, and they will surely hope that this exposure will only help their sales numbers. And while Westside had no discs in any of the top 10 last quarter, the Destiny and the Harp were both able to jump onto the charts this time around. How will things shake up next quarter? Only time will tell.

Newest 2016 Ledgestone Insurance Open Discs–July 2016

With the 2016 Ledgestone Insurance Open coming up next month, we are beyond excited here at Infinite Discs. We had a blast with last year’s event, and we are pumped to get back out there and be the official vendors of this year’s event.

I just updated our master list of this year’s Limited Edition Discraft LIO discs, but here is a look at the latest discs we got in that are now for sale on our site. Tournament Director Nate Heinold has made it very clear to us that this year’s LIO Discs are much more limited than the runs they did last year. Nate even told us just how many some of these molds were made worldwide:
