New Disc Golf Discs for 2020

New Discs for 2020!

With the new year and tournament season under way, we thought it would be good to look at some of the new disc golf discs for 2020. There are many discs that have been PDGA approved, release date announced,  and we are just awaiting the release date. With other molds, manufacturers keep details close to the vest until their announcement. Every year manufacturers introduce new discs to the sport. Some molds make a splash and instantly becoming popular, like last year’s Kong/Zeus. Others don’t have as much impact.

The PDGA approved 74 new molds in 2019. Most of them went to production. Some won’t arrive until later this year. Only time will tell how they fare with the DG community.

Let’s take a look at some the the upcoming releases for 2020. We will continue to check out discs throughout the year, as manufacturers approve or announce them.

Infinite Disc Ruin

We will start with Infinite Discs and the much anticipated Ruin putter. Do you love your Harp? Do you rely on your Zone? Is an overstable putter one of your go-to discs? You should give the Ruin a try! This beadless beauty will fight any headwind you will experience. When you throw the Ruin, you KNOW it gives reliable, hard fades for perfect placements. The Ruin is available in our durable C-Line plastic, our grippy I-Blend and now in amazingly colorful C-Blend dyed! Infinite Discs released the Ruin on January 17th with our awesome Alien stamp.

Discmania Active Line

Discmania announced it will be expanding its Active line to include an Active Premium plastic. Three molds will be made in the new plastic, the Sensei, a low-profile putter, the Maestro, a small-diameter midrange, and the Mentor, a control driver. Although the Sensei has been sold in Discmania Mystery Boxes for a while, it hasn’t been released on it’s own. The Sensei, Maestro, and Mentor will also be available in the base Active plastic. The discs’ profiles and flights are not new. They are renamed versions of Discmania’s Tiger Warrior, Spring Ox, and Sea Serpent discs. The new names are retired. Also retiring are the Fox Spirit, which will become the Magician, and the Sun Bird, which is changing to the Genius. The Magician and Genius will only be available in base plastic.

RPM Kotare

The New Zealand disc golf company release its new, overstable driver Kotare (Pronounced Ko-Tar-Ray). The high-speed driver has a turn of 0 and fade of 3, making the disc excellent for straight or headwind shots. And that strong fade makes for great turnover shots. The flight rating is 12, 5, 0, 3

Discraft Fierce

With Paige Pierce’s move to Discraft, it’s no surprise that the company would release a new mold to support the World Champion. Paige’s new prototype disc is a beadless, understable putt and approach disc, and Discraft released the disc on January 17th. Discraft announced the name of the new disc, the Fierce. Pierce is Fierce on the course!

Mint Freetail

Mint discs had the first release of 2020 with their popular understable control driver, the Freetail. They released the disc on January 6th.. Mint discs has a very loyal following and we went through the first order rather quickly. Fortunately, the Freetail is now back in stock.

Freetail - Apex Plastic (AP-FT01-19)

Kastaplast Lots

Kastaplast, out of Sweden, saw their disc the Lots approved this year. It is a straight flying, utility fairway driver. It boasts a flight rating of 9, 5, -1, 2. They are available in K1 Plastic. Lots means “pilot” in Swedish and refers to one who navigates the harbor or coast. Just like navigating the course with a Lots

Latitude 64 Sapphire

Latitude 64 added to its beginner-friendly line of discs with the release of the Sapphire. Initially available in the popular Chameleon plastic, the first run of the speed 10 driver quickly sold out. The mold is now available in Opto and Gold Line plastics. The driver has a flight rating of 10, 6, -2, 1.5. It is a 150-class disc.

Opto Chameleon Sapphire - First Run

Innova Invictus

Invictus means “unconquered” in Latin and for long range throws into a headwind, there’s no equal. Some pros refer to the Star Invictus as a “faster Firebird.” Innova Star Team’s Garrett Gurthie says, “If you think you have the power, you need this disc.” Keep an eye out for the Invictus at the end of March. The new mold features a flight rating of 10, 4, 0, 3.

Several other major manufacturers have had discs approved, and we await news about their release dates.

Innova is releasing the Avatar this year. The putter adds another overmold disc to their large library of discs.

Dynamic Discs got two approved at the end of last year: the Sergeant, described as a hybrid driver,

between a fairway and a high-speed driver, and the Bounty, a straight-flying midrange. They Bounty will be part of the Trilogy Challenge players pack. Dynamic Discs will release the Sergeant in April 2020.

Discmania recently got their Tactic approved. They are describing it as a disc that fills the gap between putters and mid-range discs. The the flight numbers are 4, 2, 0, 3.

International Brands

Several smaller brands have had discs approved in the last couple months. Many of these companies are located in countries around the world:

XCOM has several discs approved by the PDGA:

XPT1 (Advanced Putt)

XPT2 (Advanced Mid-Range)

XPT3 (Beginner Mid-Range)

XPTe (Beginner Fairway Driver)

XPT5 (Advanced Distance Driver)

Crosslap Discgolf Park, a German company, got approved for their driver, the Vigil (Called the Pipeline as a prototype). It sports a flight of 8, 6, -2, 1.5, and will be available in Advanced, Maximum, and Platinum Plastic.

Disctroyer, the disc golf manufacturer in Estonia, was approved for their putter, the Sparrow (Varblane in Estonian). Discstroyer’s web site shows the flight numbers as 3, 3, 0, 2. The Sparrow joins the mid range Skylark (5, 4, 0, 2) and the high-speed Starling (13, 5, -2, 2) in the Disctroyer lineup.

FOCUS FRIDAY – The Mantra by Thought Space Athletics

For our Focus Friday this week, we are going to spotlight the debut disc release by Thought Space Athletics. THE MANTRA was PDGA approved on October 17th, 2019 and has since been introduced into the disc market in three plastic types: Ethereal plastic (a limited edition run for the VIP Club), Ethos, and Aura. Let’s take a look at the Mantra!

MANTRA by Thought Space Athletics

The Mantra is a straight-to-understable driver which is designed to be easily managed for players of all skill levels. If you’re a newer player or don’t have a lot of arm speed, then you should still be able to handle the Mantra for great distance on the course. It could be compared to discs like the Innova Valkyrie, or the Discraft Heat. The plastic is durable yet somewhat tacky for a great feel.

MANTRA FLIGHT RATINGS

Speed: 9.0

Glide: 6.0

Turn: -2.0

Fade: 1.0

Here is a video look at the MANTRA by professional player, Drew Gibson. Keep in mind that Drew is known for his power and he admits that this particular disc is not really the best option for him, except as a roller. If you’re a power thrower, then the Mantra would turn more noticeably and become a roller utility disc.

For the next week, until the 1st of February, you can use this promo code to get yourself a MANTRA for 10% off:

Infinite Discs RUIN – Overstable Approach Disc

THE CONCEPT

Infinite Discs is very excited to kick-off the 2020 year with a new disc release to help enhance your disc golf short game. We’ve been working with Innova, the manufacturer of the Infinite Discs line, to create a mold for a small diameter, overstable approach disc. We’ve noticed that a lot of players, including pro players, have turned from standard mid-range discs to approach discs that have dimensions more like putters. We wanted a disc that would fit that trend, with a relatively flat-top and manageable rim size for both forehand and backhand throwers. We also wanted the disc to be overstable enough that it could be thrown with speed and confidence to hold the line for a longer stretch and still finish with a solid fade.

Maybe you’ve watched players like Paul McBeth throw the Discraft Zone for shots approaching the basket from a couple hundred feet away. Or you’ve watched Ricky Wysocki throw some amazing approach shots with the Innova Pig (used to throw the Westside Harp for similar shots). The list could go on, with many players using overstable “putt-and-approach” discs to get through tight fairways or to make runs at the basket from longer distances. That’s what we wanted in our own disc line.

THE PROTOTYPE TEST

Several months passed while the mold was created and prepared for a test run. In late 2019 we received a small box of prototype discs from the Innova factory so we could test our overstable approach disc. It was exactly what we were hoping for. The profile was just right with a flat-top that would feel great for forehand approach shots, plus a rim size that was not too tall so that it could also be thrown backhand with comfort.

Some of us at Infinite Discs took the disc out to throw it around and see how it flew. It felt like a great overstable complement to the already popular Infinite Discs Tomb, which is more of a straight-flying approach disc with minimal fade. We could throw the new test disc even harder without turning it over and it had significantly more fade.

We made the remaining prototype discs available to Team Infinite and VIP Club members as “Infinite Proto Mold #15” and those few discs sold out immediately. Our office team sought feedback from outside players who picked up those prototypes, and that feedback was very positive. So, we decided to order a complete run in durable, long-lasting C-Blend plastic (Infinite Discs equivalent to Innova Champion plastic).

COMING UP WITH THE NAME

You may have noticed that the Infinite Discs lineup has been using names that primarily recall ancient cultures. The brand kicked off with ancient Egyptian references, including the Pharaoh, the RA, the Sphinx, etc. Some discs were named after elements that could move across different ancient cultures, like the Myth, the Tomb, or the Chariot.  In the second year, we moved into some ancient Roman names like the Emperor, the Centurion, the Cohort, etc. Our third year is intended to be themed with ancient American cultural names, like with the early release of the Aztec. But with the new approach disc, we again wanted to pick a name that would cross all of the cultures.

Plus, as an overstable approach disc, we thought it should sound dense, or heavy. Well, all of the ancient cultures we know about have left their mark on the landscape through ruins. The heavy, megalithic ruins tend to last the longest and are often more memorable. Whether the ancient pyramids, the ruins of the Roman Empire, or the impressive temples of central and south America, we can still see and visit the remains of those cultures today.

Thus, the RUIN was named and will feature artwork with any number of ancient cultural references. The name was first revealed with the PDGA approval announcement. We found some of the initial reactions to the name to be quite humorous. “This disc is going to RUIN your game,” or “this disc will RUIN the course.” Luckily, most of us at Infinite Discs think that disc golf should be fun and that making fun of names is pretty harmless. So, why not wreak wreck and ruin with your overstable approach disc?

The RUIN was born.

THE LIMITED EDITION FIRST RELEASE

Infinite Discs has kicked off some of the previous disc releases with limited edition stamps. We thought the RUIN deserved the same treatment, so our initial limited edition will feature an XXL stamp. And what better way to ruin the ancient Egyptian ruins than with an alien invasion? Some of our stamps featuring Aliens taking over ancient cultures have been well received, so this fits right in.

WATCH FOR THE LIMITED EDITION RELEASE ON JANUARY 17th, 2020

Note: Some X-Out / Factory 2nd discs were made available in advance of the release, for those who wanted to try it early.

Also watch for a limited edition Las Vegas Challenge I-Blend RUIN to be featured in the am player packs at the event!

Prodigy Ace Line Discs Now Available!

Prodigy Disc Ace Line Discs

Four new Prodigy discs are now available. These are still great discs designed by the pros at Prodigy, but there’s something slightly different about the newest Prodigy discs.

Introducing the Prodigy Ace Line

Up until now, all Prodigy discs were manufactured in the USA. Over the past several years Prodigy has invested in a new disc golf manufacturing facility overseas. The discs produced in the China factory are now known as Ace Line discs. Similar to the way that Discmania has their Yikun manufactured Active Line discs, Prodigy has now released four available Ace Line discs.

Overall, it appears that the Ace Line will allow you to purchase great Prodigy discs at an even lower price point.

What’s Different with Ace Line Discs

New Molds: The four released Prodigy Ace Line discs all feature new and different molds that vary from the existing Prodigy discs.

New Names: These discs feature a new naming system making it easy to know exactly how each disc will fly by simply reading the name.

The first letter in the Ace Line naming system signifies which kind of disc it is. There are four potential disc types:

  • D- Distance Driver
  • F- Fairway Driver
  • M- Midrange
  • P- Putter

After “Model” in each disc name the disc stability is stated. There are five different possible stabilities for each disc type:

  • US+ – Very Understable
  • US – Understable
  • S – Stable
  • OS – Overstable
  • OS+ – Very Overstable

New Plastics: The Ace Line will feature two different plastics. A base plastic, that doesn’t feel like base plastic, and a premium blend called Dura Flex. The four discs introduced with this initial release are currently only available in the Base Grip plastic. You can get this quality plastic for just $7.99 each right here at Infinite Discs.

The Ace Line Discs

Ace Line Three Disc SetThe initial release includes a distance driver, fairway driver, midrange, and putter. The fairway driver, mid, and putter are also available through a three disc starter set.

We took the discs out for a few test throws, check out our quick Ace Line disc reviews here.

D Model S

The D Model S is a high speed stable distance driver. This is disc is comparable with the Prodigy D3.

F Model S

The F Model S is is a stable flying thick rimmed fairway driver. This disc goes really far for a fairway driver.

M Model OS

The M Model OS is an overstable midrange. This is the only overstable model in the initial Ace Line release. We didn’t find the flight of this mid to be overly overstable and it is still a solid mid for players of all skill levels.

P Model S

The P Model S is a stable flyind midrange with a flat top and a small micro-bead around the bottom rim.
