It all started in the break room at Infinite Discs…we’d just looked over a new stamp design by our favorite stamp artist, NEOmi-triX, and a couple of us were really excited about it– a stamp concept called the “Infinite Aztec”. But there wasn’t complete agreement on its appeal. We’ll just say that a couple of the younger members of the crew thought that Aztec art was, after all, very old-fashioned. They wanted something newer and more hip.
“Like what?”
“Like a cute kitty!”
To cut a long story short, it was argued that any disc with a cool cat on it would be more popular than Aztec art. The argument became heated enough that we decided on a stamp duel. We’d do a run of both stamps on popular disc models from Innova, with the same quantities of the same molds for each stamp. Then we’d let the disc golfers and collectors decide which was more appealing. Which ever sold the fastest would be the winner. Then we’d take that winning stamp on to other disc models from Dynamic Discs, Discmania, Gateway, and other popular brands. The losing stamp, on the other hand, would be banished. Once the remaining discs were sold, it would never be seen again.
It was a deal! But we were still missing one thing– a kitty stamp. The Infinite Aztec was ready, and had only gone through a couple of minor tweaks with the integration of an Infinite Discs logo on the forehead. But the kitty went through many variations and adjustments until it was finally turned in as a final stamp design called the “Tommy Cat.”
The original kitty concept was to have an over-the-top, cute kitty drinking from a bowl of milk. NEOmi-triX sent us a sketch of the original idea, which, when we looked at it, caused many laughing fits around the office. It wasn’t a finished piece and was missing things like whiskers and tufts of fur. It looked a bit like a pug, or a guinea pig. The stamp design changed vastly from that point, with the members of “team kitty” turning to a much tougher cat concept, rather than a cute kitty. A Tommy gun was added, changing the name to “Tommy Cat” and the cat eventually took over an entire cityscape before being fine-tuned into the finished design that focused entirely on the mafia-influenced cat.
The Infinite Discs crew is now split between TEAM AZTEC and TEAM TOMMY CAT and we’re excited to see which stamp wins the duel. We invite everybody to pick a side. There are Facebook Groups for each team, which you can join to show your preference:
FIVE free discs will be given away to disc golfers who take a side, and join one of the Facebook groups. Only the winning team will earn free discs, so choose wisely.
The winning stamp design will be decided at the end of February. Whichever stamp has sold the most will be declared the winner. Future stamp runs for the winner will carry into the spring and summer months. So this is where customers will ultimately decide which stamp will carry on, and which will be forgotten.
How to find discs with Aztec and Tommy Cat Stamps
Advanced Search
You can search and shop for special edition stamps by using the Advanced Disc Search feature on the Infinite Discs website.
Check the “extras” box and then scroll through the list of stamps and check the ones you want to see, then click the “View Individual Discs” button to see all the discs in stock with the stamp you desire. Click Here for a more extensive tutorial.
By using that Advanced Disc Search feature, you can also track which of the two stamps is selling fastest, simply by comparing how many discs are left of each. When you check-mark one of them, the number of discs remaining will appear to the right. Whichever one is lower, that is the one that has pulled ahead in our stamp duel.
If you’re having trouble deciding which team to join, consider these arguments:
Arguments For Team Aztec
When I was a boy about 3 or 4 my favorite toy was a little white cat, and you can probably understand why — they are so cute with their whiskers, and their big adorable eyes.
Then one day, the old lady who lived next door died. A family with cats moved into her house and then I discovered what they REALLY ARE. I thought I loved cats, but when I went to pet the black and white one named Sister, it viciously scratched me on the arm. I still have scars from that nasty kitty.
As I grew older I began to realize their greater evil. Every time I am around cats, my eyes water, I sneeze uncontrollably, my eyes swell up, and I get hives. Just this morning as I walked into my garage to leave for works, I noticed an awful smell in my garage. And as I opened the garage door, I saw the culprit. I saw the cat tracks.
Now some of the marketing team at Infinite Discs have inserted these menacing beasts on Innova golf discs! To make matters worse, they’ve given him a GUN, a tool designed specifically for killing. This is not a message we want to send to our children and future generations.
We can do something to prevent this stamp from spreading like feral cats in the alley to Trilogy, Discraft, Prodigy, Gateway, Legacy, MVP, and VIBRAM. To stop the insanity, we must choose Team Aztec.
Please, make the RIGHT choice. Join TEAM Aztec.
-Alan Barker, Owner of Infinite Discs
Arguments For Team Tommy Cat
So, the solemn responsibility of defending the honor of the Tommy Cat stamp has fallen upon my shoulders. It is a weight that I bear with pride and dignity. As I look at this war that has begun and tore apart our Infinite Discs family, the words of the great Don Vito Corleone, “How did things ever get so far?” and just like the Godfather, I don’t know.
It seems as though the only argument that team Aztec can come up with is, “Well, I don’t like cats.” Well, I stand here before you all, and I can say with confidence, I do not like cats, but I am a proud member of team Tommy Cat. Are cats my first choice for a house pet? Just ask my parents how I greet their cats every time I go home to visit and you will know the answer.
But does that change the cultural phenomenon that cats have become in our society? Just ask our friends at Dynamic Discs which Dyemax designs are the best sellers. Cats are in right now. It is a fad that has taken novelty t-shirts by storm. It is a fad that has even tugged on my heart strings and wallet a few times–yes even I, one who has long held felines in contempt. It is a fad that unifies us all in a love for all things cute, funny, and adorable, but also appeals to the strong and fierce. And it is a fad that we at Infinite Discs would have been fools to allow to pass us by.
I believe if we had kept this campaign free of propaganda and lobbyists, the numbers would have spoken for themselves, and the Tommy Cat would have blown the Aztec out of the water.
So I stand here today not to change your hearts, but to search your hearts more honestly, and discover what you already know. The Tommy Cat stamp design put together by our talented artist is too good and too pure for us to allow it to fall out of production. This cat deserves to fly for years to come. And while I do respect the Aztec design, it does not sway the heart with the same emotional vigor that is contained in the Tommy Cat. So let us unite together, to send a message once and for all that bold and powerful stamp designs like the Tommy Cat is what we want to see in our future.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to seeing the voice (purchases) of the people guide us in the following weeks.
Your Obedient Servant,
Jace Smellie, Assistant Owner of Infinite Discs (not to be confused with assistant to the Owner of Infinite Discs…)
Infinite Discs has officially completed four full years of business. A lot has changed in the disc golf world since we got started at the end of 2012. I thought it would be fun to put together some numbers that show the amount of inventory we’ve purchased from each manufacturer to see how disc preferences have changed.
Note that in 2013, we were a very small online retailer that did approximately one tenth of the business we did in 2016. The graphs and numbers in this chart are in no ways an indication of the overall success or popularity of individual disc brands. These figures simply demonstrate the popularity exclusively from InfiniteDiscs.com. The total volume of sales when demonstrated as a percentage makes it appear that some disc manufacturers are declining, when in reality, our total purchases from all the major manufacturers have increased every year.
Percentage of Sales by Year
2013
Innova has always been the dominating brand for disc golf sales at Infinite Discs, as you can see by the steady blue line at or above 30% of sales. Discraft took up the second-most shelf space in our warehouse, but accounted for significantly less sales at 11.15%. As the hot new thing, Prodigy and Vibram actually accounted for more sales than did Discraft. With many of the top pros switching to Prodigy, everybody needed to try their discs. All the new Prodigy releases flew off our shelves. The Vibram Lace was our most consistent seller throughout the year. In 2013, we purchased “Trilogy” discs directly from Latitude 64 in Sweden. At that time, Dynamic Discs was primarily a retailer, and had just begun manufacturing their own line of discs. MVP was still a rather new company and only offered a handful of disc models.
2014
In 2014 you can see the rapid rise of Trilogy and MVP plastic. At this point, Dynamic Discs became a major distributor and Trilogy discs became more mainstream. MVP introduced their first distance drivers as well as their secondary brand Axiom. Dynamic and MVP sales increased at such a rapid rate that Prodigy and Vibram sales accounted for a substantially smaller percentage of sales than the previous year.
2015
2015 sales follow a similar path as 2014. Trilogy and MVP sales continued to take a bigger share of the pie while Prodigy and several smaller brands became less significant in terms of sales. Dynamic disc sales especially rose with the popularity of their increasing line of disc golf bags. 2015 Vibram sales flat-lined while Legacy Discs started to see a small bump in percentage points with the release of the popular selling Outlaw. Discraft purchases were fairly steady, in large part due to the massive number of Ledgestone Insurance Open Discs introduced.
2016
Last year our biggest increase in percentage of sales came from Discmania. Because previous years Discmania purchases had always been made directly through Innova, these sales are still lumped in the same category. Discmania’s rise in popularity was at the expense of Trilogy, MVP and Discraft. Prodigy saw a slight bump last year, in large part because of the popularity of their inexpensive BP3 and Practice bags.
What will 2017 hold?
The one thing we know for sure is that disc golf will continue to grow and that it’s a great time to be in the industry. There will continue to be new discs and improvements that will help us enjoy the game even more. Innova and Trilogy may be the primary providers of the discs we throw, but you never know if someone, or something, might come along that will alter our disc preferences. We know by experience that one thing is true– most players never tire of exploring new discs!
Another week, another Disc of the Week! But this isn’t just any disc. Its the big one. The old reliable. The best selling disc in the history of Infinite Discs. The one, the only, Innova Destroyer.
The Innova Destroyer has integrated itself into the heart of disc golf culture. Very few disc golfers, if any, haven’t heard of this 12-speed driver. With the endorsement of 4 time world Champion Paul McBeth, the Destroyer has become in many respects, the disc of modern disc golf. While most of the world still think of Star Wars when they hear the term, “Star Destroyer,” those two words have taken on an entirely different meaning for disc golfers.
This week only, take 15% off the Innova Destroyer in every plastic type that we have by using the discount code: DWDESTROYER17. We are entering our latest Innova restock as we speak! So check right away to get the first pick, because we expect a lot of Destroyer orders this week! Also make sure to enter our Facebook giveaway that we will post later today!
It is time to announce this week’s disc of the week! The second 2017 Disc of the Week is another classic in the disc golf world–The Gateway Wizard.
The Wizard is one of the most used and best selling disc golf putt and approach discs of all time. It features a beaded rim along with a deep dish that isn’t too deep, which provides a great feel in throwers hands and a stable and predictable flight path. If you are looking for a straight to overstable putter with great glide, this may be the disc for you. Gateway has a plethora of plastic types for the Wizard as well to accommodate disc golfers who prefer a grip that is, soft, stiff, tacky, slick, or anything in between! This last year we saw the introduction of a few new plastic blends including SB (“Special” Blend), PWP (Pure White Prototype), and their newest, $$$ Super Glow (Money Glow).
As part of our disc of the week promotion, we will not only be offering an exclusive discount code, but we will also place all plastic types of the Gateway Wizard on sale! So followers of this blog and our other social media platforms can receive 15% off already discounted prices. The discount code for this week is DWWIZARD17. Use this code, and share it with your friends so they can stock up on this highly popular disc! Also, be sure to checkout the Facebook page for a giveaway that will be announced later today!
Happy New Year everyone! The time has come for the final top selling disc review for the 2016 calendar year. The fourth quarter includes the beginning of the off season, but also the holidays. The discs we see that made jumps up the charts from last quarter were likely molds found on disc golfers’ Christmas lists. We also may see influences from some of the holiday promotions we ran. Whatever the reason, here are the top performers for the months of October-December!
And the Innova Destroyer sweeps the number 1 spot for the entire year! (I don’t think anyone is too surprised there). But we do see a new number 2 with the Innova Aviar and Innova TeeBird swapping positions from last quarter. The Dynamic Discs Judge also mad a big jump back up to grab the number 4 spot after coming in at number 7 last quarter. The Discmania P2 Psycho is a new name for the overall top 10 with an impressive finish at number 7, beating out the long time number 2 disc, the Discraft Buzzz which came in at number 8. It is also worth noting that this quarter was dominated by the Putt and Approach category with 5 of the top 10 spots. Perhaps a lot of golfers were looking to stock up for their Winter Putting leagues and off season practice?
Again, we see a quarter where the distance driver category is dominated by Innova. The Discmania DDX dropped one spot to the Innova Wraith, and the newly released Innova Shryke came in right behind at the number 4 spot. For the rest of the chart we see a lot of the same names with a few different numbers, but the MVP Catalyst prevented a complete Innova sweep (Discmania being manufactured by Innova) by holding onto the number 10 spot it grabbed last quarter.
Some of the same names, but still quite a shake up at the top of the charts. The Discmania FD Jackal jumped four spots into the second place slot with the Innova Thunderbird right behind it at number 3, while the 3 discs they jumped, the Latitude 64 River, Innova Leopard, and Latitude 64 Saint, remain right behind them. I will be very curious to see how these 5 molds shake out next quarter. Also a name we haven’t seen on this chart in a while, the MVP Volt, made an appearance by snagging the 10 spot.
I mentioned that we might see some influence from our holiday promotions, and this category is a prime example. In conjunction with MVP and Axiom, we did a special 3 color Blitzkrieg Stamp that we released for the Black Friday weekend. Could this be why the Volt made its way back into the top 10? Around the same time, we did a run of Bomber stamps on several Discmania molds in their new C-Line Luster plastic. This may be why we saw such a big jump up the charts from the Discmania FD and P2. However, that may not be an entirely accurate evaluation. The MVP Volt is a standing favorite disc for MVP throwers, and was likely on their holiday wish list. And this year we saw substantial growth across the board from Discmania. So maybe these increases were just part of the natural trend? Who knows really, but it is still worth noting this promotions.
Same 5 names at the top, but one slight change in order. The Roc beat out the Roc3 for the first time this year, swapping the number 2 and 3 spots. The Discraft Buzzz OS made a decent jump up into the 6 spot after coming in at number 10 last quarter. Also two new names that have been on the list before but didn’t make it last quarter–The Dynamic Discs Verdict which finished 8th, and the Dynamic Discs Truth which tied with the Discraft Comet for 9th place.
Perhaps the most interesting “storyline” for me in this category is the Dynamic Discs Judge. While it only jumped two spots from last quarter, it had finished number one for a few quarters before that. So it is interesting to see it jumped back up to finish right behind the Innova Aviar, which was the top selling putter for the first time just last month. Perhaps some of the new World Champ hype that we saw last quarter is dying down? The Westside Harp only dropped one spot, but the Latitude 64 Dagger dropped from number 7 to 10. These are still higher spots than these discs ever were at before Ricky Wysocki won the World Championship, so it will be interesting to see how these molds do in 2017.
Any surprises, takeaways, or thoughts? Feel free to leave a comment, and check back in 3 months for the next update!
We are very excited here at Infinite Discs to start up one of our favorite promotions–the Disc of the Week! Around the beginning of every year, we run a program where we announce a new disc each week as the disc of the week (kind of self explanatory…). For each disc of the week, we will do a Facebook giveaway, a new blog post, and an exclusive discount code for that specific disc.
So, for week 1 of the 2017 Disc of the Week promotion, our disc is our top selling midrange of 2016, the Discraft Buzzz. The Buzzz has been one of the most consistent selling discs in our short history, so it just made sense to make this the first disc of the week in 2017. The Buzzz is a long standing staple in many disc golfers’ bags. In a growing midrange market, it seems like the Buzzz will always be a top contender.
This week only, get 15% off the Discraft Buzzz at Infinite Discs by using the discount code DWBUZZZ17. Also be sure to check out our Facebook giveaway for your chance to win any Discraft Buzzz in our inventory!
Well another year filled with discs flying through the air and flying off our shelves has come and gone here at Infinite Discs. As we stop and take a look back, 2016 really was quite an eventful year for us. We have had several opportunities to go out and make new friends within the disc golf community, and of course we have been lucky enough to sell more product than ever before, and help disc golfers all over find the discs and equipment that they need. So first and foremost, thank you all for your support this year.
Thank you for making Infinite Discs what it is today, because we really wouldn’t be where we are today without this amazing disc golf community that we are lucky enough to be a part of. Here is a look back on some of the highlights of our year.
Infinite Courses and Infinite Discs App
At the beginning of the year, we expanded our site to include a feature called Infinite Courses. With Infinite Courses, disc golfers have access to a large database of disc golf courses and layouts within those courses. Players can then use their Infinite Discs profiles to keep score and track their playing stats such as putting percentages. Over time, players earn an “Infinite Rating” which is similar to a PDGA rating, but it takes into account all rounds entered. This is great for disc golfers who are looking for ways to try and keep a competitive edge while playing their casual rounds. If you can’t find your local course or current layout, you can create it! Also you can read and write course reviews that help other disc golfers decide which courses to play and what they should expect.
The best way to maximize the features available in Infinite Profiles and Infinite Courses is with the new Infinite Disc Golf Mobile App! The app makes it easy to keep track of your score and stats while you play and to find local courses as you travel. With the app you can review courses, update conditions, and store all of your rounds played to the cloud. When you submit your rounds, you can immediately see the rounds Infinite Rating. The app is now available on Android devices. Perhaps our biggest disappointment of 2016 is how long the development for the iOS version of the app has taken, but progress is being made and we look forward to making the app available to Apple devices in 2017.
Infinite Discs at Tournaments Across the Country
Early in the year we realized that it was time for us to invest in a company vehicle. This beauty, appropriately named the “Infinite Van,” was the result of that realization. After buying the van in March, we have taken her to disc golf courses and tournaments that we have sponsored all over the place. Primarily we have made trips in the Utah and Idaho area for tournaments including the Utah Open which will be part of the Disc Golf Pro Tour this year, as well as Utah’s only PDGA A-Tier, The Solitude Open.
This van also made two trips to lovely Emporia, Kansas. The first trip was for the Glass Blown Open, and the second was for the PDGA World Championships that we stopped in for on our way to Peoria, Illinois for the Ledgestone Insurance Open. We had the wonderful opportunity to be the Official Vendors of the Ledgestone Insurance Open in 2016. I was able to spend some time with Terry Miller during each day of the live stream coverage to promote Infinite Discs and announce the daily giveaways that we did for each day of the tournament. In all the traveling we have done this year, we have had the opportunity to play some great disc golf courses, but even better meet some extraordinary people. We love this disc golf community that we have, and we look forward to more travels and experiences in 2017.
Infinite Discs VIP Club
Another great project we launched in 2016 was the Infinite Discs VIP Club. This is an exclusive club aimed toward disc collectors. All members of the VIP Club receive a new package every month with a new limited edition disc that cannot be found anywhere else, not even on our own website! So far, the club has been a huge success, and right now we have an offer that will allow folks to sign up and pay for the entire year’s membership up front. More info on this offer and the club in general can be found here.
Team Infinite
This summer, we opened up applications for players looking to represent our brand as part of Team Infinite. The response was incredible, and slightly overwhelming. After sifting through all the wonderful applications that we received, we selected several new team members from across the country.
Already we have seen Team Infinite be a positive influence in the local disc golf communities across the country. From running charity or fundraiser tournaments to teaching new and young players about the sport, Team Infinite is working hard to grow the sport, and we couldn’t be happier with the team members we have. Are you interested in being a part of the team? While we are not actively accepting new members at this time, you can still fill out our application here.
New Infinite Discs Location in Pocatello, Idaho
Here at Infinite Discs, we are quickly growing out of the small office building in Logan, Utah that we have called home since we first opened for business in 2012. We are excited to be building a new warehouse just down the road in 2017.
This past summer we were able to open for business a little further down the road (about 90 miles) in my hometown of Pocatello, Idaho. Pocatello is a growing and thriving disc golf community with three permanent disc golf courses and more in the works! We opened up the new shop just across the street from the 9-hole course where I learned to play this sport that we all love, Ross Park. Currently, the Pocatello store’s inventory is separate from our online inventory, but in the coming weeks we will start to include parts of our Pocatello Inventory online to expand our online selection, particularly in the apparel department. So watch for more info to come on that soon! For now, go give our Idaho store a like on Facebook to be kept in the loop, and stop by when you are in the neighborhood!
New Infinite Discs Custom Stamp Designs
A couple years back we designed a simple Infinite Discs stamp that we released on a few disc molds, but we were never really in love with that design. So we worked hard to design some new awesome stamps that would look good and would make disc golfers want to show off their beautiful discs. First, we released the Infinite Bomber, which has received a very positive response, so we have tried to keep a healthy stock of Infinite Bomber Discs in stock.
About a month later, we released (my personal favorite) the Infinite Illuminati stamp. While the Illuminati sales have not quite matched the Infinite Bomber, we have still received some great feedback on this clean and unique design. Which one is your favorite?
Then there was the Blitzkrieg stamp, which was a limited edition 3-color stamp that we did with MVP/Axiom for the Black Friday Weekend. We still have a handful of the Blitzkrieg stamps left, and you can search for this stamp as well as the Bomber and Illuminati using our Advanced Disc Search on the site.
What Will 2017 Hold?
We do not know what exactly to expect in 2017, but we do have projects in the works. We know that the iOS app will be ready this year, and we know will be relocating to a new warehouse. We also may know a few things that I can’t quite reveal yet, but we hope you will stick with us to enjoy the ride. We hope to continue to do our part to help grow the sport in 2017, and make everyone’s disc golf experience just a little bit better.
