Focus Friday – The Sergeant on Sale

FOCUS FRIDAY– Dynamic Discs Sergeant

Welcome back to another Focus Friday, where we look at a certain mold or brand, and give you a discount so you can try it out for yourself. This weekend, we look at a popular control driver from the Dynamic Discs lineup… the Sergeant.

The Sergeant is an excellent distance driver with a crossover feel – it is not as fast as the Raider, but faster than the Getaway. It is an excellent disc for throws that a fairway driver may not reach, but that you don’t want to power down. It’s a comfortable disc for both backhand and forehand with a nice dose of stability to give you an end fade.

DISCOUNT -> This weekend, get a Sergeant in any plastic 20% off with this discount code – FOCUSSERGEANT

This deal will end Monday night, so get yourself this mold while you can!

Frolf Discs – Best FRisbee gOLF Discs

Frolf Discs

You probably found this page because you’ve played a round of frolf or two, or three, and are ready to get your own frisbee golf discs.

What does Frolf mean?

The word frolf simply combines the first two letters from FRisbee and the last three from gOLF. Frolf simply means playing a golf like game with a frisbee or disc. Some people also abbreviate this even more and call the game FOLF.

There are primarily two types of frisbee golfers: those who play occasionally and refer to the flying discs as “frisbees” or “frolf discs,” and hard core players who refer to these objects only as “discs.” Now, the terminology varies by location, years playing, etc., but here is my basic run down of the difference between frolfers and hard core disc golfers.

Difference Between Frolfers and Disc Golfers

Disc Golfers Frolfers

Own Multiple Discs Yes Not Usually
Use Discs Not Designed for Disc Golf Never Sometimes

Frolfers use one to three discs per round, sometimes actual Frisbees not designed specifically for disc golf, and can rarely throw more than 200 feet. Frolf Discs include Ultimate Frisbees, aerobies, or even the cheap-o plastic frisbees you get at a parade.

While frolf is sometimes played on actual courses with chain filled baskets, it is also played using trees, poles, or other objects as targets. Frolf is a recreational activity, a time out with friends and family and is not primarily a competitive activity. Sure, there may be some competition, but there is no training or practicing. There is actually a website devoted to frolf and its true definition.

Frolfers do not know disc golf terminology are not concerned about technique, form, foot faults, or following the rules. In fact, they likely don’t even know what good form is, or that there even is a disc golf form. And there are official rules to disc golf? But aren’t you just throwing frisbees?

But… It happens all the time. Frolf is so fun, maybe you were the best at your family reunion and you’re ready to play it some more. If you’re ready to buy your own discs designed exclusively for disc golf, then you might be advancing to that of a disc golfer.

Hard Core Disc Golfers own literally dozens of discs in many different plastic variations and blends. These players have huge backpacks or carts they use to haul around their discs made by companies such as Innova, Discraft, and Latitude 64. These disc golfers can throw their distance drivers 300, 400, and sometimes even 500+ feet!

As a good frolfer, I thought I could throw a frisbee pretty hard until I went to a disc golf league and started playing with with real hard core disc golfers.

Hard core disc golfers shun the word frolf, folf, and frisbee golf, and are likely to take offense if you use one of these f-words.

Is it Okay to use the term Frolf?

Yes. But ONLY if you are not at a disc golf league, tournament, or around people who consider this term offensive to their beloved sport. If you’ve decided that you are going to become a disc golfer, then you should try your best to move the f word out of your vocabulary.

Best Discs for Frolfers

There are literally hundreds of different frisbee golf discs available in dozens of plastic varieties. The reality is that most discs made specifically for disc golf are not suitable for frolfers. Throwing “high-speed overstable discs” will simply be frustrating for a player trying to learn the basics game.

Our site has several tools to help golfers find the absolute best frolf discs.

1. Sort by discs that are recommended for beginners.

Using our “find the perfect disc” feature, one of the options is, “player skill level.” By selecting beginner, you’ll be able to see different putters, midrange discs, and drivers, that will help improve performance for a round of frolf and make it more fun. Click this link for a recommendation of the best frolf discs for beginners.

2. Beginner Frisbee Golf Sets

Frolf Starter SetsOne of the best way to get good golf discs for beginners, at an excellent price, is to purchase beginner sets. We offer several different variations of starter sets from the leading disc manufacturers. Here is the link to all of the beginner sets that we sell.

Warning for buying disc golf sets on the internet: Be very careful when buying disc golf sets on Amazon, E-Bay, and Walmart. Many of the discs in these sets are complete garbage made by Chinese manufacturers who no nothing about disc flight or disc golf. These discs are not even fit for the most casual frolfers. Here is our list of disc golf sets frolfers should avoid at all costs:

3. Our Most recommended for beginners pages.

Our website has thousands of disc golf reviews. Every time a player reviews a disc, they are asked to rate how “beginner friendly” the disc is.

Those rated most “beginner friendly” appear at the top of each page.

4. Beginners Guide to Buying Golf Discs

Our beginners guide to buying frisbee golf discs goes over some of the basics of disc golf flight, as well as tips to help navigate our site. This will help you to understand what the many different disc golf options mean, like the differences between plastic types, disc weights, and the best ways to get cheap frisbees. Read the beginners guide here.

Cheap Frisbee Golf Discs

If you’re looking for cheap, inexpensive discs, then you have also come to the right place. We offer the best price for frisbee golf discs. For even lower prices on quality plastic, be sure to check out our “on-sale discs” page.

While there are many different manufacturers and models of disc golf discs, the biggest key to determine which discs are inexpensive has to do with the plastic type. The cheapest frolf discs available come in an inexpensive plastic that isn’t very durable.

For most frolfers, these inexpensive discs work just fine and fly well enough, even when they are “broken in” a little and have a few dings. If you plan to get into competitive disc golf, we don’t recommend base plastic discs, but if you know you will always be a recreational frolfer, these discs will work just fine. Simply sort by price for any disc model you look at.

The brands that have the cheapest disc golf plastics include:

On Sale Selection

Every week on Wednesday we select a new batch of products to put on sale. These products are typically on sale because we are overstocked on these molds (our bag) or just have something special we want to promote. (You’ll find we like promoting the Infinite Discs line, a lot). These are GREAT Discs and at GREAT prices.

Disc Golf Sets, X-Outs and Misprints

Another great way to get inexpensive discs is buy purchasing x-outs, misprints, and disc golf sets.

X-Outs – X-Outs also known as factory seconds are manufactured discs that do not meet the manufacturers quality standards. These discs often have coloring issues or imperfections in the plastic. The imperfections should not effect the intended flight of the disc, but even if they do, these discs are still adequate for the casual frolf round. You can buy base plastic X-Out discs for less than $6 per disc.

Misprints – Like X-Outs, misprints are cheaper discs because something went wrong at the disc golf factory. The difference between x-outs and misprints is that the error with misprints happened during the hot stamping process (where they put the disc name and logo on the disc). With misprints, you will get the intended flight of the disc as the only error is with the visual display.

Mystery BoxPackage Sets – Package sets allow you to save money on discs through bundle savings. There are a variety of different bulk sets including starter sets (which typically include 3 discs for beginners) and Mystery Boxes. Mystery Boxes typically consist of large quantities of discount discs. The catch with mystery boxes is that you don’t know what discs you are going to get. If you don’t know what discs you want, this is a perfect way to get new frolf discs. You can even purchase a large mystery deals box and share the discs with a group of friends.

The Essential Review of Pulse A Disc Golf Academy

Infinite Discs recently teamed up with Pulse A Disc Golf Academy to offer its customers a chance to check out the Academy with a two-week trial and 50% off a membership. This is a great disc golf training program. I got to check out their program and found some great content!

What is the Pulse A Disc Golf Academy

Pulse A is an online disc golf education program that uses some of the top pros to teach all aspects of proper disc golf form. Once you sign up for their program, you’ll have access to hundreds of video lessons that are broken down into certain subjects. The lessons are grouped together in videos that teach all about the desired subject. Want to learn proper backhand form? Check out the lessons and exercises in Avery Jenkins’ Backhand Standstill, a level 1 course. Feel like you’re ready for more advanced backhand techniques? Watch the level 2 video, Backhand Steps.

Each instructional video breaks the subject down into bite sized clips that instruct and provide exercises. Each video clip builds on previous clips, until you have a complete from. It’s like attending a clinic by some the best disc golfers in the world.

Subjects Covered

As you would expect, the Pulse A videos cover different levels of driving, putting, and (coming soon) midrange throws with several different instructors. They also have videos covering other elements of the sport, such as training and field work. Plus, they also include gems such as their Disc Talk, which allow us to get to know some of the instructors and their personal life and careers, and the My Style segments, which are additional lessons with their own personal flair.

Pros and Cons

Pros: This would be a great investment for you if you are interested in improving your disc golf skills, like to follow professional disc golf, and are willing to put in the time to practice. A great benefit to their program is that you can watch the videos at home or use their app to watch at the course or practice field.

Cons:  One issue I had with the presentation of the videos is that we only have the ability to mark an entire video as a ‘Favorite’, instead of individual lessons or exercises. This means you have to scroll through the lessons to watch or re-watch the specific lesson that you need at the moment. It’s not a big issue, and it is one that is on Pulse A’s radar to address.

Their video library isn’t massive, but they have a ton of new ones in the works. I’m looking forward to some of the upcoming videos, such as their strength and training

Summary

The Pulse A Disc Golf Academy is a great product that utilizes segmented lessons and the portability of an app to deliver instructions from top professional disc golfers. Whether you’re just starting out in disc golf or are looking for ways to improve certain aspects of your game, the Pulse A program has something for you. I wasn’t blown away by the current number of videos available, but their library will continue to grow with additional lessons, in-the-bag segments, and My Style videos.

The beautiful part is that you get to check out their program for free. Plus you get half off your subscription should you choose to enroll. Check out Pulse A by clicking the link below, and elevate your disc golf skills today!

What impact does a World Championship have for a disc golf brand?

Prodigy Pros Celebrate Isaac Robinsons Win

With Isaac Robinson recently winning the PDGA Disc Golf World Championships, I was curious to see if we would see an impact on Prodigy Disc sales. I ran the numbers to see if there was any kind of noticeable difference for Prodigy sales during, and immediately following the PDGA World Championships.

Prodigy sales by week during Worlds

Analyzing sales data from August and September reveals a noteworthy trend. During and immediately following Robinson’s World Championship win, there is a noticeable increase in the sales percentage of Prodigy Discs. This percentage more than doubled in comparison to the days preceding the World championships. For the week of August 17th – August 24th Prodigy sales accounted for just 2.04% of all InfiniteDiscs.com disc sales.

On September 3rd, Prodigy Discs accounted for 4.87% of total InfiniteDiscs.com disc sales, marking a substantial uptick from the earlier weeks. This surge continued into the week following the World Championships, with Prodigy Discs maintaining an average sales percentage of approximately 5.89% from September 8th to September 14th.

Percentage of Prodigy Sales by Day

However, it’s essential to put this increase in context. The Prodigy Disc sales surge cannot be solely contributed to the World Championship win. There was a surge in Prodigy sales during the World Championships, before the outcome and winner was determined.

Prodigy has consistently emphasized its marketing efforts through professional players. It’s reasonable to assume that a significant portion of Prodigy’s fan base also enjoys following professional disc golf competitions, and simply tuning in to watch the World Championships may have ignited a desire among customers to acquire their favorite discs. Moreover, the stellar performances of other Prodigy-sponsored pros, Alden Harris and Gannon Buhr, both securing top-10 finishes, undoubtedly added to the overall excitement surrounding Prodigy throughout the week. These Prodigy Pros signature disc sales will likely rise as well.

As of the most recent week of available data, covering September 20th through September 26th, Prodigy Discs continued to maintain a strong presence in the market. The average sales percentage for Prodigy Discs during this period was approximately 3.87%. While it represents a slight dip from the peak immediately following the World Championships, it still indicates sustained interest in their products.

To commemorate the win, Prodigy also released commemorative edition Isaac Robinson discs which are just now being uploaded to our website. These special edition discs should also help to increase Prodigy Sales in the short term.

It’s clear that having a player win the World Championship is impactful for a disc golf brand. The question now is whether this boost in Prodigy Discs sales is a temporary bump or if Isaac Robinson’s World Championship victory will have a long-term impact?

It will be interesting to monitor Prodigy Discs sales in the coming months to gauge whether Robinson’s victory has ignited a lasting passion for their discs among disc golf enthusiasts.

If you haven’t tried Prodigy Discs yet, be sure to check out these links for the best Prodigy disc golf discs.

Rapid Surge of Disc Golf Manufacturing

Disc Molds Approved this Year

There was a time a few years ago where I knew and tested every new disc from every brand.

Now I just don’t even try anymore.

There are so many new molds and brands popping up that I’d pretty much have to test a new disc every day, and remember how it flew, just to keep up with all the new discs approved by the PDGA.

I ran some data from the PDGA approved discs to see exactly how rapid the pace of disc golf manufacturing has increased. As you can see from the curve, it’s pretty much an exponential increase over the last two years.

There will be more new discs approved by the PDGA during 2023 than any other year. More unique molds have been created through the first eight months of this year than were during the 20 year period from 1983-2003!

Line Graph showing the number of disc golf discs approved by the PDGA each year

It’s not just that the major brands are pumping out more new molds each year. The biggest contributor to the increased PDGA approval is the huge influx of new disc golf brands.

This graph shows the number of different brands with discs approved by year. 2023 has already had more discs approved by different brands than any other year with 70 different companies approving at least one disc mold.

Disc Golf brands with at least one disc approved by the Pdga during the calendar year.

Number of PDGA Discs by Brand

Next we are going to take a look at the number of disc molds by each individual brand. Because there are so many disc golf brands that have been or are currently in existence, I had to divide these charts into four different categories just so we can read them.

Big Brands

We classified big brands as those with at least 30 different disc molds approved by the PDGA. Innova by far has the most different disc golf molds with Discraft and Prodigy coming in second and third.  Despite it’s relative newness in the disc golf manufacturing world, Lone Star Discs made this top 15 list of “big brands”.

Chart showing the total number od discs PDGA approved by brand with at least 30 discs approved.

Medium Brands

The medium brands on this chart have between 10 and 30 different disc molds approved by the PDGA. Axiom Discs nearly broke into the big brand barrier with 28 discs, and to my surprise, the Canadian manufacturer Daredevil disc is also right there at 29.

Small Brands

Small brands are those with between 5 and 9 disc molds approved by the PDGA

Extra Small Brands with less than 5 molds approved

Growing Brands

Much of the PDGA approval list is because of the rapid growth of many of the new disc golf brands. These are the companies that are aggressively investing in new molds.

The below graph shows the number of discs PDGA approved in the last year. Remix Disc Golf dominates this list with 17 different disc molds approved. Clash Discs, Doomsday Discs, Orbital, and Yikun Discs are close behind.

Disc Molds Approved this Year

When I pull the date for the last two years, Lone Star Disc is the fastest growing brand with 28 new molds in this time period.

Number of disc molds approved by the pdga in each of the last two years

Who are these new disc golf brands?

I used to do regular posts that were updated with all of the new disc molds each year. Now I’ll simply go over these rapidly growing disc golf brands. If you haven’t heard of them, you’re probably not alone.

Lone Star Disc LogoLone Star Disc

Lone Star Disc is a remarkable disc golf company with a unique origin story. Founded by a Texas-based plastic company that primarily manufactured parts for oil rigs, the company underwent a transformative journey during the pandemic. As the oil industry slowed down, their son proposed the idea of exploring the disc golf market, and it turned out to be a brilliant move.

Leveraging their expertise and resources, Lone Star Disc started producing their own molds and plastics in-house, capitalizing on their Texas roots, and quickly gained traction in the disc golf community. Their ability to quickly produce molds and manufacture locally allowed them to respond swiftly to customer demands and rapidly expand their product line when other manufacturers weren’t able to keep up.

Lone Star Disc has invested heavily in marketing strategies by establishing both Professional and Amateur teams, further solidifying their presence as a major player in disc golf.  They have a full line of discs with some very unique molds like the oversized Super Dillo. With their unwavering dedication to quality and innovation, Lone Star Disc, and the “quality of their plastic” is undoubtedly making a significant impact in the disc golf world.

Clash Discs Logo

Clash Discs

Clash Discs is another brand that formed as result of the pandemic boom. Renowned for their commitment to quality, Clash Discs takes pride in producing discs with ultra-high-quality plastic and they have chosen Finland as their manufacturing hub. This strategic decision ensures that their discs are crafted with precision and durability, providing disc golfers with exceptional performance on the course. However, Clash Discs is not just about manufacturing exceptional discs; they also invest heavily in marketing strategies that set them apart from the competition. With disc names like Honey, Popcorn Peach, and Fudge, they embrace a fun and creative approach that appeals to disc golfers of all levels. Additionally, Clash Discs has built a formidable professional sponsored team, comprising top-tier athletes, which is a testament to their dedication and support for the sport. Despite being a relatively small company, Clash Discs continues to make waves with its innovative designs, passionate marketing approach, and strong commitment to professional partnerships.

Doomsday Discs Logo

Doomsday Discs

Doomsday Discs undoubtedly is one of the most unique and distinct brands in the disc golf. The brand prides itself on pushing boundaries and embracing an unconventional approach to disc design. With an emphasis on creating discs that challenge tradition and offer players a truly unique experience, Doomsday Discs has captured the attention of a significant fanbase of disc golf enthusiasts. Several of the Doomsday Disc molds like the WMD are deliberately not able to be approved by the PDGA. From their captivating disc artwork to their innovative and unconventional molds, Doomsday Discs are definitely unique.

The brand’s commitment to uniqueness extends beyond aesthetics, as they continuously seek to allow team members to develop discs that offer a creative look feel and flight characteristics. In a sport filled with traditional standards, Doomsday Discs dares to be different, making it a must-have for players looking to add a distinct touch to their disc golf collection.

Remix Disc Golf

Remix is another unconventional disc golf company, and is a disc golf brand that we are not able to sell on Infinite Discs. The origins of this brand were unknown until Bodanza Disc golf discovered that the brand is owned by MVP disc sports for their Amazon.com sales. While several of their discs have been around for a while, they just decided to get them PDGA approved this year.

Yikun Discs Logo

Yikun Discs

Yikun Glaze Line DiscsYikun is an established disc golf manufacturer that has significantly expanded its range of disc molds in recent years. The Chinese brand’s collaboration with Discmania and increase in production quality has undoubtedly bolstered its reputation within the disc golf community.

Furthermore, Yikun is set to launch a new line called Glaze next month, featuring a selection of innovative disc molds. Based on insider information, these forthcoming discs are visually captivating and some of the most aesthetically pleasing plastic discs ever made.

Are there too many disc golf discs on the market?

Undoubtedly, the disc golf pandemic boom created the surge of new disc golf businesses all trying to tap in on the growing market.

In my opinion, the growth of new disc molds is growing much faster than disc golf. Disc golf retailers will not be able to keep up. While Infinite Discs still attempts to stock all disc molds from every brand, independent brick and mortar pro shop only have room for so much product. Disc golf retailers need to pick and choose and will only select from the best and most popular discs from the most popular brands.

If companies can create demand for their discs they will find success with the new molds they are producing. If they cannot, then we will see a correction in the disc golf production market as new brands fail because the cost of developing and manufacturing discs exceeds revenue brought in from sales. I expect that we will see a large number of “out of production” and “expired molds” over the next few years.
