What Do You Want in a Disc?

Top Disc Golf Drivers

As disc golf players and disc enthusiasts, we’re always looking for a new disc that will fill a special spot in our bag, or that will “revolutionize our game”. Whether consciously or unconsciously, we all tend to live and play by the code that it is always the disc’s fault when our game isn’t panning out as we’d hoped. And regardless of how the discs are flying, some of us have succumbed to a serious case of disc lust. If there is anything special, collectible, beautiful, or unique about a disc, then we want it, even if it will never fulfill its destiny by flying through the air.

discstackYet, how many new discs do we really need? There are now thousands of disc molds out there, and some of the larger brands have pretty much covered the entire spectrum of overstable to understable, short-range to long-range, light to heavy. What else is there? If you want an overstable fairway driver, there is a stack of nearly identical options. If you want an understable mid-range, then there are many choices across many brands. It might seem there are a lot of perfectly acceptable options that are clamoring for our attention.

Then again, if you want pants, there are thousands of brands that make pants. Yet they keep making them, and people manage to find the details or qualities that define their purchasing choices. So is there really a limit to how many “new” discs can come out, even if they essentially serve the same purpose? There are always the cosmetic tastes when it comes to stamps and dyes. There are always differences in plastic types and the way the disc “feels” in your particular grip.axiomstack

All of these considerations lead to one simple question:

Do you feel that there is a need for a certain disc mold on the market that you haven’t found yet? If so, what do you want or expect that disc to do for you?

We asked a variation of that question to our Twitter followers, basically phrasing it like this: “Does anybody have a fantasy disc that they wish existed? If so, what would it look like and fly like?”

Looking back, perhaps “fantasy” was the wrong word, because these were some of the answers we received:

— “Magnetic missile disc that is exactly like a normal driver, so no one suspects anything.”

— “A disc that was stable in turn, but understable in fade.”

— “A disc that allows you to yell one command at it per round, like Miss the tree!”

There was another absurd description of a disc involving Deadpool, and another person asking for a first run McPro with a special stamp, etc. Obviously these are not fantasies that could be fulfilled, but really, when it boils down to it, maybe that is all that is left when it comes to manufacturing discs. There isn’t anything new to offer, until you dive into the absurd, or the fantasy world.

tobuThere are currently companies dabbling into the world of on-board electronics, like TOBU, for example. That is one frontier where new things can be tried. Aside from locators and Bluetooth technology, I suppose there could eventually be discs that report back their exact flight statics, from flight path the flight velocity, spin, and other factors that may or may not actually result in an improvement in your game. There could eventually be built-in cameras that allow you to play back a crazy disc-eye view of the disc’s flight. Again…neat…but pointless. Maybe there could be a system that interacts with a phone app to instantly tell you, to the centimeter, how far away from the basket your disc landed, or how far you threw it. Technology makes for interesting conversation, but would those discs really fly any differently? Would they fill that spot in the bag that you just can’t seem to fill? Or would they be novelty, for novelty’s sake?

Here is where you share your thoughts!

We want to know. Is there a real-world answer to that question? Is there a disc mold that you feel is lacking among all the discs out there? Is there something lacking in the market? Comment below and share your feelings. Maybe there is a lot more to be done in the world of discs that we haven’t yet considered. Remember, the laws of physics cannot be disobeyed! In the real world, what disc do you still need?

Christmas Ideas for Disc Golfers

Christmas is just around the corner. Golf discs make great, affordable, Christmas presents. Disc golfers love trying different discs and gadgets that make their disc golf experience more enjoyable.

Here are a few ideas to help the non-disc golfer choose a winning gift for the avid disc golfer.

New Disc Golf Discs

Disc golfers love trying new discs. But with hundreds of different options to choose from, how do you know which Frisbee to choose? Here are a few of the hottest selling new releases of 2016.

Distance Bombers

Newer technology and disc mold innovations continue to make disc golf technology better. There have been plenty of new discs released this year that flat out fly farther than discs of the past. Here are a few to consider.

Discmania DDX – The Discmania DDX has been one of the most hyped up drivers ever. This disc is very similar to the Innova Destroyer which is the most popular distance driver currently on the market.

Westside Destiny – Every disc golfer wants more driving distance. The Westside Destiny is ultra fast and glides forever. There is a good chance your loved one will set a new distance record with the Destiny, and they will thank you every day because it was you who so thoughtfully bought one for them.

MVP Catalyst – The Catalyst uses multi weighted Gyro technology to produce a unique disc flight. The most popular of these Gyro distance bombers released this year is the MVP Catalyst.

Discraft Thrasher – Unlike many of the other major brands, Discraft doesn’t release a lot of new molds, but when they do, they are usually excellent. The Thrasher fits that mold. This is another distance bomber that is the perfect stability for max distance for the Intermediate Disc Golfer.

Great Discs for New Disc Golfers

Until a player develops adequate form, snap, and arm speed, distance drivers like those listed above won’t necessarily provide more distance, and will likely provide more frustration. For a newer player, consider one of these new discs.

DGA Sail – The DGA Sail is effortlessly controllable. This disc drives very well and stays incredibly straight for a frisbee golf driver.

Vibram Onyx – For new disc golfers the Onyx has been described as a game changer. This disc is very easy to control and gets newer disc golfers more distance than just about any other disc.

Collectible Discs

In the disc golf world, discs aren’t only thrown, but they are also used as wall hangers for their artistic beauty. Limited disc runs are manufactured with unique designs and stamps and many become valuable collectors items. If you’re looking for a collector discs, here are some options to consider:

DSC06043Discraft Buzzz GT – The Buzzz is the most popular midrange disc on the market. The Bangar Groove Top (GT) is one of Discrafts most popular putt and approach discs.

As the official vendor of the 2016 Ledgestone Insurance Open, we were able to have a limited run of 500 of Groove Top Buzzes made. You might love the way the groove top feels, but if not there is no doubt that this disc is a thing of beauty.

blitzkriegbombercloseUnique Infinite Stamp Discs – Infinite Discs released a limited number of bomber stamp discs in 2016 including the MVP Blitzkrieg stamp. Find your disc golfers favorite disc and get them one just like it with a unique Infinite Stamp. To search these discs,

Infinite VIP Club

If you want to spoil your disc golfer with an entire years worth of new and collectible discs, then sign them up for the VIP club. On December 12th, 100 additional spots in the club will be made available for new members.

Lots of Discs for Cheap

If you like value, where you get more bang for your buck, consider an Infinite Deals Box. This is the perfect sampler package for disc golfers of all skill levels. Each mystery box includes a combination of discs from collectibles to misprints. Each box is carefully selected to include discs with a variety of different flight types and discs from multiple manufacturers. If you don’t know exactly what you are looking for, this is the perfect, inexpensive, way to delve into a new spectrum of disc and plastic types. With an Infinite Deals box the average cost of each premium plastic disc is about half the normal MSRP, and your average cost per disc is less than $10 each!

Multiple Putters

Every disc golfer I have ever met wants to improve their putting game. Improved putting comes through practice, and the easiest way to practice is to have multiple putters of the same plastic and weight. Figure out what putter your disc golfer is using, and buy them 6-10 more. A handy way to get lots of putters at once is with an Infinite Discs Putter pack.

Disc Golf Accessories

Disc Retrievers

If your disc golfer regularly plays courses with water hazards, a disc retriever is a must have.  The Golden Retriever will help him rescue his most favorite discs. This ingenious device makes it easy to fish discs out of the water. It’s small, light weight, and effective.

For fishing out of streams and running bodies of water, the Disc Gator is the retrieving device of choice. The easy collapsing tent pole extends about 12 feet making it quick and easy to get your disc out of water or tall trees.

Disc Golf Bags

If your disc golfer owns multiple discs, but doesn’t carry a bag, or uses something that wasn’t designed for disc golf, a small bag will make a great gift. The Infinite Discs starter bag offers the best value on the market and has a large variety of colors to choose from.

For the disc golfer who has a small bag, but is now really getting into the sport (acquiring lots of discs, playing in organized events etc.), a larger bag ($30 – $80) or disc golf backpack ($70-$220) is an ideal Christmas gift. From a disc golfers perspective, there is something very satisfying about being able to carry enough discs to satisfy any shot you might face.

The hottest trend for the serious tournament playing disc golfer right now is a disc golf cart.  These things aren’t cheap, but there is no better way to show your disc golfer you really care about them than by gifting them a cart that will allow them to carry around 30+ discs without breaking their back.

For a tournament playing disc golfer, the cart allows disc golfers to bring everything they need for a serious round of disc golf including a sweatshirt, jacket, umbrella, disc retrievers, backup discs, backups of the backups, large water bottles, and best of all it provides a comfortable seat anywhere on the course.

Disc Golf Basket

For that extra special someone, a portable disc golf basket is a great gift that will really get them excited. Portable baskets are ideal to help improve putting, and for setting up temporary disc golf courses. My recommended portable disc golf basket is the DGA Mach Lite.

How to Improve Your Disc Golf Game–Tips from World Champs

It is early November here in Northern Utah, and last week marked the first mornings when I needed to scrape the frost off of my car before driving to work. As much as I hate it, this will become a habit in the following months. Acknowledging this opens the door for me to recognize another reality that I hate–the disc golf offseason is upon us. Other than a few small local events, tournament season has all but ended.

The offseason is both literally and figuratively a cold, dark, and miserable time for the disc golfer. However, this break from competitive disc golf play provides an opportunity for reflection and improvement. For myself, I know that there are several elements of my game that I need to work on to bring my game up to the next level that I would like to compete at.

How Do We Improve our Disc Golf Game?

So how do we improve? I had the opportunity a few months ago to ask some of the best players in the game this very question. It was during the press conference at the 2016 Ledgestone Insurance Open presented by Discraft in Peoria, IL. The pro panel at this conference included 4 World Champions with 12 World Championships combined–Catrina Allen, Valerie Jenkins, Nate Doss, and Paul McBeth. I asked them to give some advice for amateur players who are hoping to improve their game.

Cat went first, and the first thing she mentioned was the importance of field work. This became a point of reference for everyone’s answers. Catrina went on to emphasize the importance of dedication. She encouraged players to throw and grow and throw some more. She also stressed the need to prioritize the field work over the casual rounds. “Stop playing casual rounds, and get to the field for practice,” were her final words of advice. If you want to really compete, spend your time working in the field rather than playing a casual round at the course. Put in the work, and the results will follow.

Val agreed with Cat, but also stressed the importance of the fun of the game. She started out by saying how she has been playing for her whole life, and it has been important for her to still have fun. “Remember to have fun. That’s when you enjoy the sport the most.” She recommended ta players remember why they started disc golf and just continue to play, and then they will excel.

Val’s husband Nate spoke next. He started off by jokingly saying that his biggest piece of advice was to be 15 years old and have really long arms. All jokes aside though, he did stress that in today’s game you have to start young to compete at the top level and develop an excellent forehand. He went on to say that it’s not easy to be a top level disc golfer. It’s a dream, but a lot of hard work, and there’s a lot of alone time, but if you put in the work it will pay off.
