Yikun On Sale

When six university schoolmates were introduced to disc sports, little did they know the depth they would get into the sport. They started out playing ultimate, but were eventually introduced to disc golf. During their final year in school they decided to start a company whose mission was to promote flying disc sports. Yikun Discs was born!

Yikun became a big name regionally, and eventually became the first Asian company to get discs approved by the PDGA, USA Ultimate, and the World Flying Disc Federation. They currently ship to over 40 countries.

Introducing Lone Star Disc

Infinite Discs carries over 55 brands of discs! We started this blog series to introduce you to some of the brands and molds that you might not be as familiar with. Each week we will spotlight a different company and tell you a little more about them. Because of Covid shutdowns our supply of discs was severely affected. Therefore, we may not have all of the molds from all of the brands we will talk about. But, it might put a few more molds on your radar for the future. This week we are back in Texas to learn about Lone Star Disc.

Back to Texas

About 40 miles north of Houston lies the city of Conroe, Texas. It is the county seat and boasts a population of about 92,000 people. There are a handful of disc golf courses in the city. And one disc golf company: Lone Star Disc.

Lone Star Launched in 2020 by Travis Dillard and his family. Travis and his brother, Synjin, have been playing disc golf recreationally for the past 20 years. As their interest in the sport grew they started to consider manufacturing their own discs. Lone Star Disc is veteran owned and operated, and their family helps run the business.

First Approved Molds

The first two molds that were approved for the company were the Penny Putter and the Middy. A month later, the Mockingbird was approved. The Penny Putter is a straight-flying beadless putter with little turn and a nice fade at the end. The Middy is a good wind fighter with a flight similar to a Roc3, but with a little more glide. The Mockingbird is an understable control driver. It has a little turn, but a dependable fade. In addition to those three molds, Lone Star also has a good mid/approach disc with the versatile Harpoon. They also have the Mad Cat, which is a straight control driver with a moderate fade at the end. The Mad Cat is also one of the hot sellers for Lone Star Disc.

Just last month the PDGA approved the next mold in the Lone Star lineup, the Bowie. It is the company’s foray into high-speed discs. The Bowie is a speed 13, overstable driver. Excellent for forehand drives, especially in a headwind. Beyond that, they have an understable Mid and a more stable high-speed driver in the works.

Plastic Types

Currently, Lone Star offers a couple different plastic types: Bravo Plastic and two firmness’s of Victor Plastic. The Victor plastics are used in their putters. Victor 1, or just ‘Victor’, is a much softer blend than the Victor 2. Both Victor Plastics are grippy and fairly durable. The Bravo Plastic also comes in Glow Plastic for some molds.

A Pro On Board

Despite being a fairly young company, Lone Star Disc is sponsoring a pro for the 2021 season. Tanner Girouard, PDGA #88077, will be out on his first DGPT season. Tanner is a ‘local’ from the Houston area, and has been a huge supporter of the vision being created by Lone Star. He ha

s numerous wins in his career and will now match his skills with the best in the world on the tour.

In The Future…

The folks at Lone Star Disc are excited about their future in the sport. Their molds that are currently available are just the beginning, and they have big plans moving forward. They want to design more molds that fly like they are meant to fly. And they want to have a big enough variety of molds and flights so that people can throw exclusively Lone Star, and have all of the flights covered. And they are shooting for next quarter to roll out the next molds.

The sport of disc golf has been growing at a fast pace for quite a while. Lone Star believes that trend will continue. With more people playing and experiencing the awesome feeling of watching the beautiful flight of a well-thrown disc, the more people will share their love with friends and family. That love, along with the growth of live tour coverage will expose even more people to the sport. And as disc golf grows, Lone Star will be there to provide the disc molds that people want!

It all began with someone who not only loved disc golf but wanted to weave that love into the fabric of their family life. Storm has recently introduced their first three discs which include a distance driver, a Mid-Range, and a Putter. Let’s take a quick look at those three discs…

JET STREAM

The first distance driver by Storm Disc Golf is the Jet Stream which features a relatively wide 2.3 cm rim width which places it around a “speed 12” flight rating. When thrown with power, it has a little turn to the understable side, but then finishes with a steady fade. When thrown with less power, it will be a consistently overstable driver. The flight numbers are comparable to the very popular Destroyer by Innova, so it has the potential to be a very popular driver for experienced players.

Fade: 3.0

EYE

The Eye refers to the “Eye of the Storm” and is a basic, dependable mid-range disc for all short range drives and approaches on the fairway. It is a wide diameter mid-range, and should feel comfortable for players of all experience levels. It has a slight dome and a low profile rim height, so it slides easily out of the hand. It is design for very straight, precision flight.

Turn: -1.0
Fade: 1.0

CRATER

The Crater is a very unique putter to introduce to the market. When it comes to putters, there are a lot of them on the market, and it helps to stand out. The Crater features a thumb track on the top of the disc, which already puts in into a unique category, but the top isn’t just flat– it is a bit of a puddle-top which makes it even more unique. That means that the center of the disc is lower than the rim. It has an overstable finish, so it is more of a “into the wind” putter and short-range approach disc. Or, if you like power putting at the chains, this may be the disc for you.

State of Disc Golf – What Brands Do You Know and Throw?

In the 2018 State of Disc Golf Survey we asked some questions that we love to ask every year– we want to know which brands are most recognized and loved, plus how many players bag discs by those brands. Sometimes we see an imbalance between brand awareness and loyalty vs. what is actually inside a player’s bag. For example, last year we discovered that while more people claimed that Dynamic Discs and Latitude 64 were their favorite brands, there were actually more people who had Discraft in their bags than those who bagged Dynamic Discs or Latitude 64. Let’s take a look at how those results panned out in this year’s survey.

BRAND AWARENESS VS IN YOUR BAG

First of all, this chart excludes any brands that were under 1% of survey participants claiming to bag the brand. The “Regularly Follow the Brand” data is made up of those participants who said that they regularly follow the brand as apposed to “not aware of them,” “heard of them,” “I know some things about them,” etc. In other words, we only included the data where players ranked the brand the highest in terms of awareness.

Innova has taken the top spot again in terms of high brand awareness with Dynamic Discs, Latitude 64, and Westside (all Trilogy brands) following behind. When it comes to bagging the brand, Discraft has now fallen right behind Dynamic Discs, but is still in front of Latitude 64. That is still a big disparity between people who regularly follow Discraft and those who bag Discraft — while they don’t follow the brand, they do have Discraft discs in their bag. It’s probably safe to assume that the extremely popular Buzzz mid-range has a lot to do with that.

Discmania is also making great headway in terms of the number of players who bag their discs, and their brand awareness is also growing rapidly. MVP and Axiom have picked up in the number of players bagging their discs. The awareness of those brands has also pulled up the awareness of their newer spin-off brand, Streamline, though not as many people bag that brand yet (at the time of this survey there were only two Streamline molds).

The rising of other smaller brands in awareness and disc use, like RPM, Mint Discs, Kastaplast, Hyzer Bomb, etc. is encouraging in showing that more players are becoming aware of newer or smaller brands, and are more likely now to add their discs to bags when compared to previous years.

FAVORITE MANUFACTURER

We also asked survey participants this question: If you could throw discs made by only one manufacturer, which would it be?

The “Innova Made” brands took the lead with 46.4% and that includes brands like Discmania, Hyzer Bomb, and Millenium, which are all manufactured by Innova.

Trilogy came in a strong second with 32.9% and that includes the brands Dynamic Discs, Latitude 64, and Westside.

MVP also manufactures Axiom and Streamline Discs, and they now take up third place with 9.3%. Though quite a bit behind the two leaders, they are a fast-growing part of the disc golf market. They passed Discraft this year to take that third place spot.

Another ironic move in this year’s survey is that Vibram jumped into sixth place where they didn’t even hit the top eight last year. But since the survey they have opted to exit the disc golf business.

CHANGING BRAND LOYALTIES

Finally, we asked if survey participants had changed their favorite brand during the last year. The majority 74.5% said that they did not change favorite brands, while the other 25.5% said that they did. So, a quarter of disc golfers changed brand loyalties last year, showing that the market is still fluid when it comes to branding.

What is in OUR bags?

In the past few blog posts concerning the State of Disc Golf Survey, we have established that Innova is the most popular manufacturer in the disc golf world. It was chosen as the favorite brand in every demographic. However, even though Innova led all other manufacturers in popularity, according to our survey, less than 4% of us throw exclusively Innova. As we all know from interacting with other disc golfers, even though we may favor one brand, most of use throw discs from a variety of manufacturers. This blog will explore the variety of brands we throw and give us a good snapshot of what is in our bags.

First let’s look at the popularity of the brands that are in our bags. The survey didn’t ask how many discs we had of each brand — that would have been too time consuming. It simply asked which brands could be found in our bags. Not surprisingly, the brand that most of us throw is Innova, with 87% of us keeping at least one of their discs in our bag. The next most popular brand is Discraft at 69%. Latitude 64 has 42% of respondents throwing their brand. Dynamic Discs is the fourth most popular disc in our bags at 35%. Rounding out the top five was Prodigy at 28%. Westside, Gateway, and MVP were just a couple of percentage points behind Prodigy, sitting at 26%, 24%, and 23% respectively.

Although we can say that Innova was the clear winner with this survey question, it is important to point out the significance of the Trilogy brands (Westside, Latitude 64, and Dynamic Discs) taken as a single entity. Although these three companies are separate, they work together to avoid duplicating efforts, such as manufacturing, distribution, and sometimes disc design.

In our survey we asked about the “Trilogy” brands (Latitude 64, Dynamic Discs, and Westside) individually. These are three separate companies, from three different countries, who work together to share some of the manufacturing and distribution workload. Although separate, they market themselves as members of Trilogy. Taken as a single entity, 58% of us have at least one of the brands in our bags. A significant number of us, 15%, have all three Trilogy brands in our bags. If disc golf sales are any indication of Trilogy’s popularity, we have seen their disc orders increase in the last two years so much that they rival Innova’s. Yes, that is counting the three companies as one. It will be interesting to see if the trend continues in the coming years.

It is certainly important to consider everyone’s favorite brand as we explore the current state of disc golf. If we favor one brand over another we are more likely to buy and follow that brand to the exclusion of other brands. However, taking a peek inside the bags of thousands of disc golfers can tell a slightly different story than just asking which manufacturer we prefer. Yes, Innova is still the king of the bag. But, with the knowledge that few of us are dogmatic about brands, other disc manufacturers can take solace (pardon the pun) in the knowledge that many of their discs are nestled comfortably alongside the undisputed champ. The question of how much competition in such a relatively small sport is too much may be a subject for another blog. For now, it appears that the competition is good for us as disc golfers. Let the manufacturers develop new molds or materials as they fight for their share in the disc golf market. Meanwhile, let’s go huck!
