Best Disc Golf Roller Discs 2024

Disc rolling down the fairway. Roller shot.

In disc golf, having a wide range of shots in your arsenal is advantageous when it comes to competition or beating your personal records. Since we all face a variety of situations on the course, the more tools we have to achieve the shot we need, the better our chances of succeeding with. One of those tools is a roller shot. In this blog we will learn about rollers and discuss the best disc golf roller discs.

The list of best roller discs is difficult to amass, since there are so many molds that can be used for rollers. This list taken from previous surveys, current surveys, and from Infinite sales data. You can help with the data by participating in the survey at the end of this blog! Plus you’ll be entered into a drawing for Infinite gift cards.

What Is A Roller

A roller is a throw that intentionally hits the ground shortly after it’s released and rolls along its edge. It can be utilized for shorter, technical shots to get out of trouble. Or for longer shots when distance is necessary.

Rollers are useful when you have low-ceiling shots and still need to cover a lot of ground, or shorter technical shots. They are also great options when you have open spaces without roller obstructions, such as a ditch or pond in the fairway. The challenge of throwing a roller is making sure you land on the ground with the correct angle. Even so, the disc might hit some irregularity on the ground and end up going in a direction that the thrower didn’t intend.

Throwing Rollers

I’ve heard many people say that they haven’t even tried a roller shot, and don’t even know how to throw one. Other people have mastered the shot and use it when available or necessary. In this blog we will look at some roller discs and determine which ones are the best. Instead of focusing on shorter, technical rollers, we’ll discuss the distance shots.

If you manage to become proficient in throwing rollers, it can be a thing of beauty and reward the thrower with a lot of ground covered. Some of my longest throws were well-executed rollers. Let’s take a look at the best disc golf roller discs.

Note: You’ll notice that many of these discs, but not all of them, have a lot of turn and are considered understable discs. That characteristic makes it easier for people of any skill level to get the disc to get the angle needed for a roller. With sufficient arm speed, and disc could be a roller, but we’re focusing on molds that people indicated they use as roller discs.

Best Disc Golf Roller Discs

Innova Sidewinder   9, 5, -3, 1

Innova Sidewinder disc

The Sidewinder was made for either rollers or turnover shots. It has a good amount of turn to help get the disc at a good angle for rollers. While it may be too flippy for big arms at full power, it can be a useful utility disc for people of all skill levels.

Innova Leopard 6, 5, -2, 1

The Innova Leopard can be found in beginner sets because it is easy to throw and easy to get some turn, even for beginners. With just a little experience and practice, the Leopard can be a great roller disc. It is easy to get the necessary angle with the Leopard and is a great disc to start learning how to throw rollers.

Infinite Sphinx  9, 6, -3, 1

Infinite Discs Sphinx

With the Infinite Discs Sphinx’s flight numbers you would expect to find a roller in that mold, and you would be correct. The Sphinx can also be a good turnover disc, or even a good fairway driver for beginners. The I-Blend models come in 150-class weights, and sometimes even a bit lighter. The Sphinx is a great disc whose uses can evolve as your skill improves.

Innova Roadrunner  9, 5, -4, 1

Innova Champion Roadrunner

The speed-nine Roadrunner has a good rim size and perfect flight numbers for beginners to get good distance. With a little experience, players can utilize the turn in the Roadrunner to execute some impressive rollers. The mold has been popular as a roller disc since its release.

Innova Mamba  11, 6, -5, 1

Innova Star Mamba

With even more turn than the Roadrunner, the Innova Mamba boasts a slightly higher speed, which may offset the extra turn a little bit. It also has a lot of glide for those big turnover shots. But if you want a long roller shot, check out the Mamba. I threw a Metal Flake Mamba as my roller disc until it disappeared one day. I recommend the Mamba.

Innova Rollo  5, 6, -4, 1

Innova Star Rollo

Not even a year old the Rollo is a great roller option for disc golfers of all skill levels. It was designed and marketed as a roller disc and has the numbers to back that up. When you’re not trying to cover a lot of distance on the ground, the Rollo can also be used to get a lot of turn out of a throw. It makes a great beginner disc or a disc that can be shaped in the woods.

Prodigy F7  7, 5, -3, 1

Prodigy 400 F7

If you are a beginner looking for a great fairway driver, look no further than the Prodigy F7. It comes in a variety of plastic types to suit your preference. And its flight numbers are perfect for people just starting out. In the hands of a more skilled player, the F7 is an amazing roller or a turnover disc.

Latitude 64 Diamond  8, 6, -3, 1

The Diamond is among the best driver for beginners because of it noob-friendly flight numbers and its availability in lighter weights. Beyond its title as a great beginner disc, The Diamond makes a great roller disc. It is easy to get the Diamond to the ground at a good angle.

Westside Queen 14, 5, -3, 2

Westside Discs Origio Burst Queen

Because the Queen is a high-speed disc, it likely won’t be a roller for less experienced arms. That is not to say it isn’t useful for slower arms, it’s just that it won’t be used as a roller unless it is light weight or heavily seasoned. With a more experienced player the Queen can deliver some impressive rolls.

We Want To Hear From You!

There is the list of the best disc golf roller discs… but it is not complete! We need to hear from you so we can confirm and expand the list. Let us know your favorite roller disc when you’re going for distance.

We tabulated the results of your comments and there are an impressive 30 different molds! Many were on our list, but most weren’t. The Sphinx and the Roadrunner made our list AND the podium with your votes. The third podium member might not be familiar to some of you. It is the Prodiscus Flipperi

Prodiscus Fliperri  9, 3, -3, 0

A Prodiscus Flipperi Billed as a forgiving disc for beginners, the Flipperi can also be used as a roller. Manufactured in Finland, the Flipperi follows the usual Prodiscus naming convention of taking an English word, in this case Flipper, and adding a Finnish vowel. It truly is a flipper of a disc!

We randomly selected five commenters and gave them a $20 Infinite Discs gift card. The winners and their best roller disc are:

Todd – Prodiscus Flipperi

Michael L – Thought Space Athletics Ethos Mantra

Jacob K – Innova Roadrunner (Barsby Signature)

Ryan W – Discraft Hades

Daniel O – Above Ground Level Baobab

Best Disc Golf Discs For Women

Female disc golfer carrying a bag of discs

Like many of you, I frequently find myself exploring the world of disc golf discs, looking for the perfect discs to improve my game. However, as a male disc golfer, I also know that the disc preferences of female disc golfers may differ from my own. Knowing the importance of inclusivity and representation within the sport, in this blog I wanted to examine the disc selection specifically tailored to meet the needs and preferences of women players.

I will highlight the best disc golf discs for women, acknowledging the unique considerations and nuances that might influence their choices. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just getting started, finding the right discs can significantly impact your performance and enjoyment on the course. So, let’s dive in and explore the best disc options for women disc golfers.

Why Different Discs?

Let’s start by clearing up the reason that we should discuss different discs for women versus men in the first place. On average men are stronger, have longer arms, and have bigger hands than women. In many circumstances, these traits affect one’s ability to throw a disc with more power, which gives men a wider variety of discs and weights that will work for them. The skill level of a disc golfer also affects their disc selection, but all things being equal, men have a physical advantage in the sport of disc golf. Therefore, certain discs will help women throw farther.

Throwing with less power, whether it is for physical reasons or because of skill level, affects the flight of the disc. There are several disc characteristics that cause a disc to fly a certain way. Throwing with the proper power for those characteristics is important. Let’s look at those characteristics and talk about a discs flight numbers.

Briefly, the four-number flight rating system that disc golf has adopted to describe the flight of a disc is the best way we have to categorize our discs. The four numbers represent (in the order they appear on the disc or a website):

  • Speed – the relative speed you need to be able to throw the disc in order for it to fly correctly.
  • Glide – How long the disc will stay in the air
  • Turn – The amount the disc will drift to the right (RHBH throw) at the fastest parts of its flight
  • Fade – The amount that the disc will drift to the left as it starts to slow down

Which Flight Numbers Should You Consider

Each of the numbers have a range that affect whether or not the disc will work for you, your skill level, and how you want to disc to fly. Here is the number range women should consider for the four categories listed above:

Speed (Range 1 to 14)– It is important to get the disc speed to match your power/skill. Unless you are a more advanced player, stick with discs that have a speed of nine or less. Any faster and your disc won’t fly like it should. Again, this is because the disc needs to be thrown at certain speeds, and unless you have the power to hit those speeds, you will not be able to get the distance you need.

Glide (Range 1 to 7) For the most part, you should look for with the most glide as possible. Look for 5-7 glide for the longest distances possible. As your skill improves, you might want a disc with less glide. Until then, maximum glide!

Turn (Range -5 to 2) Getting a disc with a lot of turn will help you get big S-curve throws for maximum distance for your power. The further the turn number is away from zero, the more it will turn. Look for discs that have -5 to -2. A 2- or even -1 disc would be better for throwing in a headwind than a -4 or -5.

Fade (Range 0 to 5) If you don’t have the skill or power to throw faster discs, you really don’t need anything with more fade than 2. Throwing discs in the 0 to 2 range will serve you well.

The Importance Of Weight

It is important to include a weight range to help find discs for someone with less power or skill. It takes less effort to throw a lighter disc, so it is easier for someone who doesn’t have the power to still throw the disc fast enough to fly like it should. Look for discs in the 150-165g weight range, where possible.

Best Drivers For Women

Latitude 64 Diamond disc

Drivers are the disc of choice for getting the most distance out of a throw. They have the widest rims of all disc types. That wider rim means they need to be thrown at faster speeds than slower discs. Drivers can be used after people develop a certain level of skill.

Latitude 64 Diamond – Ladies, if you’re looking for a disc to help you get good distance on your drives while you work on your form, check out the Diamond. This mold is part of the ‘Easy-to-use’ series and is made for players who don’t have as much power or skills. The Diamond comes in lighter weights, which helps you be able to get good drives and upshots. Check it out today!

Innova Leopard – If you look at which discs are found in many Innova beginner sets, you’ll find the Leopard. This low-speed fairway driver has a little bit of turn to assist in achieving longer flights. If you get this mold in DX plastic, it will season to a great flight for people who don’t have the power necessary for faster, more stable discs.

Infinite Discs Sphinx – Not only does the Sphinx have a lot of turn for longer flights, but it is available in very low weights. The Sphinx is also available in I-Blend plastic, which is a bit cheaper than other premium plastics.

Other great drivers for women:

Innova Shark

Discmania Essence

Divergent Discs Kraken

Innova Mamba

MVP Signal

Dino Discs Pterodactyl

Innova Sidewinder

Best Midrange Discs For Women

Discraft Buzzz Disc

Midrange discs are used for shorter drives and approach shots. They are usually speed 4 or speed 5. They are also used for more controlled and precise shots. Their reaction when they hit the ground is much less pronounced than with drivers, making them easier to hit the area you’re aiming for.

Discraft Buzzz – One of the best-selling discs of all time, the Buzz is a straight-flying disc that is great for learning to shape your shots. Its rim size makes it easy to grip and comfortable to throw. The Buzzz is a great disc for people of all skill levels.

Infinite Discs Kon Tiki – This understable midrange is a great one for women to consider. It has a low profile and small rim depth. That makes it easier to grip for people who don’t have big hands. As your skills improve, the Kon Tiki can be used for finesse shots.

Latitude 64 Fuse – The Fuse flies straight and has minimal fade. Not only does the Fuse come in a variety of plastics, it also comes in a variety of weights. If you need to start with a lighter weight, including 150-class, you have that option.

Other midrange discs to consider:

Axiom Paradox

Infinite Discs Anubis

Doomsday Discs Scavenger

Latitude 64 Pearl

Dynamic Discs Truth

Discraft Meteor

Discraft Stratus

Best Putters For Women

Innova Aviar disc

Although putters are usually the only disc you will be using for shots inside the 10-meter circle, they are also used as approach discs and even drives off the tee. They fly for the least distance of any disc type, due to their round nose and slow speed.

Innova Aviar – The Aviar was PDGA approved for play in 1984. It remains popular today. Many other brands have produced their own ‘versions’ of the Aviar.

Dynamic Discs Judge – A beaded putter, the Judge flies straight with minimal fade. If you prefer a beadless version of the disc, check out the Dynamics Discs Warden. Both are available in a variety of plastics.

Infinite Discs Alpaca – Only a few years old, the popular Alpaca is a great mold that has found favor among pros and amateurs alike. This versatile mold is just as effective as a putter or an approach disc.

Infinite Discs Tomb

Latitude 64 Ruby

Dynamic Discs Warden

Latitude 64 Pure

Axiom Proxy

Discraft Fierce

Discmania P2

That combination translates to crushing drives and shapeable shots. The Emperor continues to sit on the throne of the top discs that we sell.

Top Disc Golf Brands

Nearly three-fourths of the discs in the top 50 were made by three brands: Innova, Discraft, and Infinite.

Innova started in 1983 and has 14 different molds in the top 50. They have the largest selection of discs and have sponsored many of the top world champions since they began.

Discraft had 11 molds in the top 50. They began in 1979 in Canada, before moving to Michigan to set up shop. Discraft discs are popular in Ultimate and Freestyle, as well as disc golf.

Infinite Discs tied with Discraft at 11 molds in the top 50. Infinite started in 2012 as a retailer. After several years and a lot of growth, they started selling their own molds. Some of those molds have become top selling discs.

Best Distance Driver For 2022

This article was written for 2022. Check out this article and data if you’re looking for the most up to date best distance drivers list.

Best Distance Driver of 2022

We looked at the best selling molds, the best rated molds, and counted your votes for your favorite mold, and we can declare the winner of the Best Distance Driver. And boy was it close! The Innova Destroyer and Wraith traded position on top of the sales and fan vote categories. And the ratings were separated by a hundredth of a point!

The top five were all Innova/Infinite, which is not surprising after seeing the results of the individual categories. Four of the top five molds have fairly similar flights, the exception being the 5th place Maya, the only understable mold. Here are the top molds and their ranking in the different categories.

Mold Sales Rating Fan Total
Innova Destroyer 1 4.63 2 7.63
Innova Wraith 2 4.64 1 7.64
Infinite Discs Emperor 3 4.75 3 10.75
Infinite Discs Pharaoh 4 4.71 4 12.71
Infinite Discs Maya 5 4.58 5 14.58

Here are some comments mentioned by fans:

Matt M – “Destroyer has to be my all time mold. Why? There are so many different throws you can make with it. A controlled spike hyzer, a sidearm flick, an all out distance bomber.”

David M – “My go-to is a seasoned Star Destroyer. It has a good feel for backhand and forehand. One at a lighter weight like 167-170 if I’m wanting a little more turn. The Destroyer is the gold standard for good reason.”

Tom – “My favorite driver has always been the Wraith. As they break in the develop a little instability so I can bag several Wraith of various plastic / beat in yet have the same grip. The Wraith is also very good in wind as I find it very reliable and wind resistant. Plus what is not to like about the Halo Wraith, wicked cool stamp.”

In this series exploring the best discs of 2022, we started with putters and have been moving up the speed ratings until this week. You can check out the survey results for Putters, Mid Ranges, and Fairway Drivers by clicking these links. Today, we will finally check out the highest-speed discs, the distance drivers, or high-speed drivers. Once again we will look at the sales data to see what people are buying. Then we will rank the molds by their Infinite rating. Finally, we will ask you to vote for the distance driver that you feel is the best. Then we will compile the information and declare a winner! We will also award one lucky commenter a gift card for their input.

Best Distance Drivers

There is something about the feel of a distance driver that sets it apart from other types of discs. The wide rim makes you feel like there is something significant in your hand, both in terms of mass and of potential distance. The sharper edge has a distinct feeling that is unlike other discs. Their higher speed rating requires a little more effort in your throw, making the movement a little more physical. All of these things add up to a different experience when you throw a distance driver.

The high-speed, or distance driver category has been the bane of many new disc golfers. Someone new to disc golf may not understand that the name of the category refers to how fast the disc must be thrown in order to fly like it’s designed to do. Instead, newer players regularly buy discs that they don’t have the skill to be able to throw properly. Therefore, many bad habits might be formed before the disc golfer understands the need to start by throwing lower-speed discs. Lighter plastics can help someone without the arm speed to throw higher speed discs. However, there are benefits to throwing lower speed discs when starting out.

High speed drivers account for slightly over a quarter of all disc sales at Infinite. That’s pretty close to where we could expect it to be. It does trail putters as a category by a couple of percentage points.

To find out which molds were the most popular, I pulled up a list of the top 20 discs that were sold in the past year. Below is a chart with the top discs, along with the percentage of all distance drivers sold:

Rank Brand and Mold % of all distance drivers
1 Innova Destroyer 10.5%
2 Innova Wraith 9.0%

15 Discraft Hades 1.4%
16 Innova Boss 1.4%
17 Discraft Zeus 1.3%
18 Discraft Thrasher 1.3%
19 Discraft Scorch 1.2%
20 Innova Katana 1.2%

Brands in the Top 20

Although most people know about the popularity of the Destroyer and Wraith, they may not know that one out of every five distance drivers sold at Infinite is one of those two molds! Those are some successful molds. In addition to holding the top two spots in the category. Innova is also responsible for 8 of the top 20 distance drivers we sell. That ties Discraft, who also holds 8 of the top 20 spots. In a distant third place is Infinite Discs, with 3 of the top 20. There were only four manufacturers in the top 20, and here is a chart with the breakdown:

Although Infinite Discs only had three molds in the top 20, those molds accounted for a significant portion of the distance drivers sold. In fact, sales of Infinite’s three top-20 molds surpassed Discraft’s eight molds in the top 20. Here is a list of the four manufacturers in the top 20, with the percentage of overall distance driver sales for the past year:

Best Rated Discs

Now let’s take a look at the Infinite Discs rating for the top molds. These are the ratings that customers have given each mold when they give a review. The ratings give us a picture of how people feel about the disc once they’ve had a chance to throw it. That’s a more accurate indication of the long-term view of people’s opinions of the disc, assuming it’s been around long enough for a significant number of people to rate the mold.  Infinite Discs’ Emperor and Pharaoh top the list, with ratings a bit above the rest of the group. Here are the top 20 discs, sorted by Infinite rating:

Infinite Discs Emperor 4.75
Infinite Discs Pharaoh 4.71
Innova Wraith 4.64
Discraft Zeus 4.64
Innova Destroyer 4.63
Innova Tern 4.61
Innova Shryke 4.6
Discraft Surge SS 4.59
Infinite Discs Maya 4.58
Discraft Hades 4.58
Discraft Thrasher 4.58

Fan Vote Results

We asked you to let us know which mold you considered to be the best distance driver. You responded by the hundreds, and we’ve compiled a list of the top molds. Just like the top mold sales, the fan vote was all Innova/Infinite. Topping the list wasn’t the popular Destroyer. It was the Wraith, which is like a slightly slower Destroyer. In addition to the brands you would expect to make the list, there were votes for many other brands, including Divergent Discs, Viking, Millennium, Legacy, Axiom, Kastaplast, Thought Space Athletics, and DGA.

Here is a list of the top voted discs, along with the percentage of people who voted for that mold.

Mold Percentage of Votes
Wraith 13.9%
Destroyer 9.4%
Emperor 4.5%
Pharaoh 4.1%
Maya 3.7%
Boss 3.4%
Grace 3.0%

Best Beginner Discs for 2022

Discs for Beginners

Best Disc Golf Discs for Beginners

With the unprecedented growth we’ve seen in our sport the last couple of years, one question comes up repeatedly among those starting out in the sport. “Which disc should I start with as a beginner?” Someone just starting out in the sport doesn’t have the technique and arm speed that many discs need in order to get any distance. Fortunately, there are many molds that are made for people without the ability to throw faster, heavier, more overstable discs. Let’s take a look at some of the best discs for beginners.

The biggest factors in deciding which molds would be best for beginners are weight, speed, and price. Speed is the first number in the common four-number flight rating. The higher the speed number, the faster we have the throw the disc in order for it to fly like it should. Since most beginners can’t generate a lot of arm speed, lower speed discs will fly farther than high speed discs for them. Throwing a lighter disc helps newbies throw farther, since it takes less effort to throw.

Disc Golf Brands Focused on Beginners

The dominant disc golf brands cater to and focus primarily on the advanced and professional players they sponsor. While there are Discraft and Innova discs for beginners, their are a few disc golf brands that focus specifically on beginners. If you’re looking for affordable beginner discs to get started in disc golf, these recommended brands are a great place to start.

Dino Discs Logo

Dino Discs – Discs designed for Kids!

The Dino Disc brand makes a unique, ultra light disc golf discs designed for kids. These discs are ultra light weight and feature colorful plastics and dinosaur themes. Dino Discs are recommended for young children aged 10 and younger.

Divergent Discs Logo

Divergent Discs – Discs for Recreational Players

Divergent is an up and coming disc golf brand with a focus on recreational players who have a throwing distance of less than 300 feet. They now offer a full line of discs for casual players. One of the best things about Divergent Discs is that the plastic quality is substantially better than other disc brands at affordable prices.

Sune Sport

Like Divergent, Sune Sports Discs are designed specifically for beginners and recreational disc golfers. They have starter sets and 7 different low costs discs that all work well for beginners. Two of the discs are in an ultra soft light weight. “safety line” plastic that is ideal for kids.

The Best Single Disc for a New Disc Golfer

Choosing a Winner

To find a winner, we looked at the key components mentioned above, combined with sales. Letting the market speak, while not necessarily definitive, is a great way to see what molds people are drawn to. As a bonus consideration, we gave points for molds that players can continue to use as their skills improve. We also favored molds that came in base plastics.

Beginner Disc Golf Plastics

Plastic types affect the flight of the disc and should be considered heavily when comparing beginner discs. More stable plastics such as Champion can change a mold from a nice beginner disc to something too overstable for inexperienced players. Entry level plastics not only make a mold less overstable, they also break in faster to add more ‘flip’ to the flight of the disc. As a nice bonus, entry level plastics are less expensive, making it less costly to get into disc golf. Most of these popular disc molds are available in a variety of different plastic types and prices.

Here are discs considered the Best Beginner Discs:

  • Innova Shark
  • Innova Leopard
  • Infinite Discs Sphinx
  • Latitude 64 Diamond
  • Latitude 64 Jade
  • Discraft Heat
  • Discmania FD
  • Dynamic Discs Breakout
  • Divergent Discs Kraken

Innova Shark – The Innova Shark is a popular midrange that is found in many starter sets. Its straight flight and low speed makes it a good candidate for a beginner disc. It is available in lighter weights in DX plastic. It still has a strong finish at the end, but even beginners should get a good flight out of the Shark.

Innova Leopard – Another mold that is frequently found in starter sets is the Innova Leopard. It is a good combination of low speed, lighter weights, and a little understability. Those qualities make the Leopard popular for beginners and advanced players alike. In Innova’s DX plastic, the Leopard is a very inexpensive beginner disc.

Infinite Discs Sphinx – There are several speed 9 molds on the list, and the Infinite Discs Sphinx is one of them. This mold comes in a variety of weights and plastic types, and the lightest weights make a great starter disc. Plus, as your skill improves, you can keep using the Sphinx by simply get a heavier disc and/or a more stable plastic.

Latitude 64 Diamond – The Latitude 64 Diamond is one of a few molds that were targeted at beginners. Initially, the Diamond was only available lighter weights, which is better for beginners. Its lower speed means the rim is the right size to feel good in the hand while being narrow enough for smaller hands to easily grasp.

Latitude 64 Jade – Another mold that was designed specifically for beginners is the Latitude 64 Jade. It is one speed faster than the Diamond and slightly less understable. However, the light weight of the Jade makes it good for newer players. Although it might make a good beginner disc, the higher speed might make a better second disc, after throwing something lighter or slower.

Discraft Heat – The Discraft Heat was one of the molds in the Discraft Ace Race a few years ago. Its flight numbers are similar to the Sphinx, with a lot of understability or ‘turn’. It is a fairway driver that in more inexpensive plastics make a great option for beginners. For more experienced players, the Heat is popular for turnover shots and rollers.

Discmania FD – The Discmania FD is another one of the molds on this list that can be used for beginners as well as experienced players. Starting with base plastics, newer playing will find the FD easy to hold and throw. Once a player advanced in skill level and distance, getting the FD in premium plastics will give them a useful tool in their disc golf arsenal.

Dynamic Discs Breakout – The Dynamic Discs Breakout is another mold that was designed with the beginner in mind. It is available in desirable lighter weights, and a few different plastic types. It doesn’t have the understability that some of the other molds on the list have. But, the lighter weight can help compensate for the straighter flight.

Divergent Discs Kraken – The Divergent Discs Kraken is a fairway driver that has a little flip to its flight, followed by a solid fade. It is available in lighter weights, making it a solid candidate for a beginner disc, even though the plastic is a premium plastic. The Kraken’s flip makes it a good disc for more experienced players looking for a roller disc. One nice thing about the Kraken is that it’s least expensive plastic is substantially more durable than most of the other mentioned beginner discs.

Percentage of sales among the top candidates for Best Beginner Disc

And the winner is…

Innova Leopard! There is a reason this mold is found in many starter sets. Its low speed means the disc is easy to grip and throw for beginners. The Leopard has a flight has a good amount of turn and a gentle fade at the end. Available in base plastics the mold is inexpensive as a starter disc. And it is available in premium plastics. Even though the Leopard is great for beginners, it can find its way into the bags of advanced players. With the turn of the Leopard it can be used as a turnover disc that will hold its turn for most of the flight. In tight woods the mold can be gently thrown on a hyzer-to-flat flight and get a decent amount of distance. Check out the Innova Leopard HERE.

Runner-ups –

Discmania FD – The FD is a great disc to start with, and one that you can keep throwing as your disc golf ‘career’ advances. As of this writing, the FD is unavailable due to material shortages. Click HERE to sign up for a notice when the mold comes back in stock.

Infinite Discs Sphinx – Just like the FD, the Sphinx is useful for players with a wide range of skill levels. In lighter weight I-Blend plastic, the Sphinx can be easily thrown by beginners and younger players, even though it is a faster mold than the FD. As of this writing, the Sphinx is unavailable. Click HERE to sign up for a notice when the mold comes back in stock.

Best Disc Golf Discs – Top 100 Selling Discs

This article was written several years ago. Click this link for an updated list of the best discs on the market.

Best Disc Golf Discs for 2021

Today we’re going to take a look at the Best Disc Golf Discs for 2021. To learn which discs are the most popular, we are going to take a look at the Top 100 Sellers from 2020. All data is taken from InfiniteDiscs.com sales figures. (We cannot show exact figures, but we can easily see which discs sell most compared to others.)

Last year, 2020, brought crazy growth to our sport of disc golf. With many disc manufacturers being temporarily shut down, plus the massive influx of disc golfers, popular discs became harder and harder to come by throughout the year. Some discs, like the Zeus, quickly became “out of stock”, thus dropping it’s rank on the Top 100. When we did get the Zeus in, it would sell very fast, causing it to go higher on the chart.

We believe the top 100 selling discs of 2020 will still be an excellent indicator of the most popular discs of 2021. These sales represent the data from old and new disc golfers, making them a great summary of the best disc golf discs.

First we’ll jump into the top 100 chart, then we’ll look at some broken down stats. Lastly, we’ll get to our recommendations for the Best Disc Golf Discs of 2021!

Top 100 Disc Golf Discs at InfiniteDiscs.com

The Top 5 Selling Golf Discs for 2020

  1. Innova Destroyer
  2. Discraft Buzzz
  3. Discraft Luna
  4. Innova Wraith
  5. Discraft Zone

The Destroyer, Buzzz, and Luna took spots 1-3 respectively, making them the perfect Driver, Mid, and Putter combo… assuming you can handle a Destroyer. The Wraith and Zone were a close 4th and 5th place, showing that Innova and Discraft dominated the top five. The P2 dropped from it’s top 5 spot in 2019, and this was primarily due to it being unavailable for most of the year.

Ups and Downs

Next to each disc is an arrow pointing up, down, or right. These arrows and numbers represent how much each disc climbing or dropped in the ranks from 2019. Many of the top discs shuffled slightly, but not enough to make a big difference in the rankings. The #44 Aztec, #45 Raptor, and #45 Rhyno made the biggest jumps into the top 50. The biggest overall jump was the #87 Cohort, jumping 174 spots to make the Top 100 chart. The #91 Relay also made a big jump of 99 spots.

The Hades and the Fierce debuted in 2020 and claimed the highest spots on the chart for new discs, at #20 and #21 respectively.

Types of Discs Sold

What types of disc golf discs are most popular?

Top selling disc type graph in 2020

Putters were the top selling type of disc in 2020. We saw a big influx in putter sales. Putters made up 34% of all discs sold in 2020. Part of this may be do to the fact that many courses were closed for a time and disc golfers had more time to practice putting.

Control drivers came in second, at 28%. Distance drivers were at a close third at 26%, and mid ranges were by far the worst selling disc type at just 12%. Midrange discs are not the most glamourous golf discs. They do not wear out nor get lost as quickly as do drivers.

Top Disc Golf Brands

In terms of the best disc golf brands, here we list the number of times any brand had a disc golf mold that made our top 100 list.

Graph of Best Disc Golf Brands during 2020

Innova appeared on the Top 100 chart 33 times, while Discraft appeared 23 times. Infinite Discs molds came in third with 9 molds on the chart. Many other brands made the chart, showing that there are excellent discs from every manufacturer. Because most of the disc golf manufacturers were unable to produce discs at a rate fast enough to keep up with demand, there was often lack of availability of many of the most popular molds. These graphs would likely be very different if we were able to keep in stock all disc models throughout the year.

Best Disc Golf Putter of 2020

Pig Putter in Disc Golf Basket

Putters take center stage this week as we post another blog for our series of the best disc golf discs of 2020. With the pandemic forcing many people to stay home for an extended time, many people took the opportunity to use the time to practice putting. Our sales and inventory reflected the surge in purchases, particularly of putters and baskets. We will look at the sales of putters for this year, and compare the top sellers with the top rated putters. We will then turn the voting over to you to help us pick the best putter of 2020.

The Best Disc Golf Putter

Sales Rank Star Rating Fan Vote Average
Discmania P2 3 6 3 4.0
Gateway Wizard 6 4 2 4.0
Discraft Luna 1 10 4 5.0
Discraft Zone 2 1 12 5.0
Axiom Envy 7 2 9 6.0
Dynamic Discs Judge 5 12 1 6.0

In a first for our category of Best Discs of 2020 we had a tie for first, second, and third. The popular P2 and Wizard tied for first place. These two putters didn’t take first in any single category, but still managed to average the best overall rating of any putter.

Two Discraft molds tied for second place, with each one landing in first place for one category of popularity:  the Luna taking first for 2020 sales, and the Zone for the best rated disc of 2020. Although the Zone has been around for more than a decade, the Luna is relatively new to the scene. Even so, when you have the best disc golfers in the world throwing a certain mold, they tend to be more popular.

Two more molds, the Axiom Envy and the DD Judge, rounded out our best disc golf putters category. Notably, the Judge took first place in the fan voting (see results below). The Envy was the second best rated disc for this year.

The Putter Approach

In the 8 years that I’ve been playing disc golf, I’ve heard many players say that you should spend the most practice time with your putter. The theory is that you will end up putting on nearly every hole. While that may or may not be the best approach to practicing, it would be hard to deny the importance of feeling confident with your putter. It needs to feel good in your hand, which means that you need to find the best plastic and mold for you. And you need to have the confidence that the putter will end up in the basket, which means practice, practice, practice.

In addition to using a putter to finish a hole, the putter can also be used as a driver and approach disc. Many overstable molds are popular among disc golfers who choose to throw them hard off the tee. With a putter’s ability to be shaped and still land softly, the putter is also a great utility disc. And we’ve seen what a putter can do in the hands of a pro: amazing drives, touch approach shots, and lengthy putts.

Best Selling Putter of 2020

Let’s start by looking at putter sales for the year. Like with the other disc categories, the numbers are affected by Covid-19. However, putters were affected a little more. The pandemic brought a spike in putter sales, and inventory shortages that still continues. It would be nice to see what sales would have looked like in a normal year, but all we can do is check out the numbers we have. Here are the top selling putters for 2020:

2020 Sales Rank YTD Disc Mold
1 Discraft Luna
2 Discraft Zone
3 Discmania P2
4 Innova Aviar
5 Dynamic Discs Judge
6 Gateway Wizard
7 Axiom Envy
8 Discraft Fierce
9 Dynamic Discs Warden
10 Discraft Roach
11 Latitude 64 Pure
12 Discraft Banger GT
13 Westside Harp
14 Dynamic Discs Deputy
15 Innova Nova
16 Innova Pig
17 Infinite Discs Tomb
18 MVP Atom
19 Westside Maiden
20 Axiom Proxy

With the top two players in the world, Page Pierce and Paul McBeth throwing the Zone and Luna, it’s no surprise that these two molds ended up at the top of the list. The Zone is definitely more of a driving putter than a putting putter, but it still falls under the putt-and-approach category.

With a third of the top 15 molds belonging to Discraft, they definitely dominated the category for 2020. After Discraft’s five molds, the remaining 15 spots in the top 20 were divided up among ten different manufacturers! The putter category doesn’t have the Discraft/Innova dominance like other categories.

Putter Rank and File

Let’s take a look at the top rated putters for 2020.  We took the star rating and the number of reviews to get a weighted score. Then ranked them according to the weighted score. Here are the results of the highest rated putters:

Rank Mold Star Rating # Reviews in 2020 Weighted score
1 Discraft Zone 4.89 64 5.45
2 Axiom Envy 4.79 31 4.88
3 Infinite Discs Tomb 4.88 22 4.84
4 Gateway Wizard 4.75 31 4.84
5 Innova Pig 4.75 30 4.82
6 Discmania P2 4.74 20 4.67
7 Westside Harp 4.69 22 4.65
8 Westside Maiden 4.77 14 4.61
9 Dynamic Discs Warden 4.75 15 4.61
10 Discraft Luna 4.59 26 4.60

The ratings results for the best putter is very unusual compared to other categories of discs. The top seven ranked molds are all from different companies! The Discraft Zone sits at the top of the rankings and sales. This overstable putter is versatile, and can be driven or putted. It was approved by the PDGA in 2008, and is a favorite of many top pros.

Old School, New School

Let’s look at the PDGA approval date for each mold. Here is a list of the top discs and which date they were approved. The elder statesman of the bunch is the Aviar, which was approved back in the ‘80’s, and the newest disc is the Fierce. The average approval year for the top 10 putters is 2009. That year would be several years higher if it weren’t for the Aviar.

Discraft Luna 2018
Discraft Zone 2008
Discmania P2 2007
Innova Aviar 1984
Dynamic Discs Judge 2012
Gateway Wizard 2002
Axiom Envy 2014
Discraft Fierce 2020
Dynamic Discs Warden 2013
Discraft Roach 2015

We also wanted to look at the top selling putters for 2020 and see how those same molds rank in top sales of all time. The Luna has only had a couple years of sales, but still comes in at #6 for all-time sales. As we mentioned in another blog, the sales of the Luna have been amazing this year. As has the sales for all putters.

2020 Sales Rank Mold All-Time Rank
1 Discraft Luna 6
2 Discraft Zone 4
3 Discmania P2 1
4 Innova Aviar 2
5 Dynamic Discs Judge 3
6 Gateway Wizard 5
7 Axiom Envy 7
8 Discraft Fierce 34
9 Dynamic Discs Warden 8
10 Discraft Roach 18

Fan Voting Results: Best Putter 2020

We asked you to vote for your favorite putter, and hundreds of you responded. We tallied the votes and have the results below. Once again the Above Ground Level (AGL) fans rallied and got one of their putters, the Madrone, on the top ten list. (AGL fans and others interested in different disc golf companies, stay tuned for a blog series introducing the smaller disc golf brands that you might not be familiar with. AGL will be one of the featured companies).

The beaded putter, the Judge, topped the charts with 10% of the votes. The Judge was also one of the top sellers in 2020, making it a solid candidate for the best disc. The mold has been around for eight years, and the straight flying putter. The comments people made about the Judge varied.

User Comments on The Judge

Steven H said, rather succinctly: (The) Judge is the best putter.

Tanner F elaborated, saying: Honestly I’ve been #teamjudge since I picked one up. Love having a bead and this is so versatile. I throw it up to 200’ for flip over shots. The new hybrid Judge is quite the addition to my top pouch.

Two older molds, the Wizard (2002) and the Aviar (1984) made the top five list. Two molds, the Luna (2018) and the aforementioned Madrone (2018) were the newest on the list. The average year of release for the top ten was 2009, while the average for the top five was 2004.

The Innova Aviar made the top five list, but has several different versions. I counted each version separately, since they are commonly known in the sport to have different characteristics. Most have different flights, while others have a different feel because of the plastic and beaded/beadless rim. I’m referring to the Yeti Pro (Jay “Yeti” Reading), the KC Pro (Ken Climo), the Aviar3, and the JK Aviar (Juliana Korver).

Variety is The Spice of Life

There were nine different manufacturers represented in the top ten molds. Only Dynamic Discs had more than one mold (the beaded Judge, and the beadless version of the Judge, the Warden). That shows the variety of tastes we have in the disc golf community. Additionally, there were 65 molds that received at least one vote. Here are the top voted putters and the percentage of votes that they received.

1 Dynamic Discs Judge 10.0%
2 Gateway Wizard 7.4%
3 Discmania P2 6.6%
4 Discraft Luna 6.1%
5 Innova Aviar 5.3%
6 Above Ground Level Madrone 4.5%
7 Dynamic Discs Warden 3.9%
8 Latitude 64 Pure 3.7%
9 Axiom Envy 3.4%
10 Streamline Pilot 2.9%

As we promised, we selected a random voter to win a $50 Infinite Gift Card. The random voter was Robbie S. of Illinois. Robbie chose an Aviar as the best putter. Thanks for your votes!
